THERMAL IMAGING HUMAN AFFECTIVE STATE DETECTION

Page 3: Thermal Imaging Human Affective State Detection slide

Introduction Thermal imaging cameras have been used to identify changes of

temperature. Then,it has been used to detect human features and identify different

signals emitted from naked human parts such as face, neck, arms and so on.

Nowadays, thermal camera are widely used to extract different features such as blood volume pulse, respiratory efforts, face temperature and facial expressions.

Different region of interest of the face were selected based on the most sensitive part where larger changes of temperature are recorded.

Experiment Flow

The thermal imaging camera was placed in front of the subject. The camera used:FLIR System Therma CAM(Model SC640). Other parts:National Instrument BNC 2110 shielded connector block

and a National Instruments DAQCard-6036E 16-bit PCMCIA. For experiment room used:Precon HS-2000D sensor. Room must be very quiet with temperature and humidity had been

controlled. Laptop screen will show the visual stimuli. The subject must avoid from excessive movement.

Analysis

Thermal imaging can measure heart rate. Blood transfers heat by conduction and convection . Therefore, skin near vessels has small change of temperature can be

detect by camera. Thermal cameras can detect those small temperature changes. Breathing function is an important signal of a person’s overall health. Average breathing rate between 12-20 breaths/min at rest and 30-40

breaths/min after physical activity in healthy individuals. Exhaled air warmer because of the heat exchange between the inhaled

air,lungs, and the passage way.

Application

Developed thermal imaging to enhance vision during the Korean War to detect enemy object during nighttime.

Invisible infared radiation emitted by objects is measured by thermal imaging cameras and convert it into colored-pixel images, called thermograms.

Humans or animals is warm object easily stand out from rather than cooler backgrounds

We can detect breast cancer The cancer will have spread when its time it diagnosed and if

detected early enough the 5 year survival rate for breast cancer is 98%

Common mammograms include two x-rays of each breast taken from different angles and its a computerized x-ray of the breast

Advantages Thermal imaging are usefull to driver to detect whether they lost

attention while driving. Its evaluate blinking rate, heart beat, and breathing activity. Overall this system is monitoring driver alertness and focus without

interfering hi physical ability. Other application, used in security services. Its used to detect the suspect wheteher he is lying or not. It can differentiate between truth and lies because it will reveal our

emotionin subtle chnge of expression.

Disadvantages

Camera must might not work well on adim light environment, thus it hard to detect the expression on human face.

Furthermore, sometimes we cannot avoid the movement of subject because they will experience comfortable problem

Then, some of the subject mught have experience fever and others are not. This will influence the result

The changes of the environment including temperature and humidity of the room may affect the result to this experiment

Thermal energy can also be reflected off of shiny object for example glass, polished metal ,and etc

Conclusion

Thermal infrared imaging gives a large impact to many sector regarding in find the affective state.

We can know the affective or emotion by the extraction, the heart beat rate, temperature and the breathing of the subject

Accuracy in receiving, there must go through more works and varying more experiment in order to reduce the percentage error when subjects trying to lie
