Product Specifications Organic Elemental Analysis (OEA) using the dynamic flash combustion technique typically measures Carbon, Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Sulfur and Oxygen (CHNS/O) at <100ppm to 100% levels. However, with the addition of a Flame Photometric Detector (FPD) the Thermo Scientific FLASH 2000 analyzer (Figure 1) offers the unique capability of detecting lower sulfur levels of 5–10ppm. Thermo Scientific FLASH 2000 elemental analyzer with FPD (Flame Photometric Detector) Trace level sulfur determinations beyond the classical OEA limit Principle of operation The instrument operation remains the same according to the standard FLASH 2000 sulfur analyzer, with the exception of detection by optional Flame Photometric device (Fig. 2). Samples are weighed in a tin capsule and introduced into the combustion reactor via the Thermo Scientific MAS 200R autosampler, with the proper amount of pure oxygen. After combustion – 1800 °C for few seconds – the resultant gases are carried by a helium flow to a layer filled with copper, then to a trap filled with anhydrone (magnesium perchlorate) and swept through a GC column before detection by the Flame Photometric detector (FPD). Total time for this lower level sulfur determination is just 5-6 minutes. Advantages: • Low sulfur determination (5 - 10 ppm) in solid, liquid and gas samples • High (<100 ppm - 100 %) and low (5 - 5000 ppm) sulfur detectable by the same instrument using TCD and FPD detector respectively • Both TCD and FPD detectors available for use at all times • Handles all sample types (solid, liquid, viscous and gas) • No sample pre-treatment required • Inert tubing and connectors prevent any sulfur adsorption • Dedicated Standard and Reference Materials (solid and liquid) kit for calibrating the analyzer according to the users samples is included in the package included in the OEA/FPD option • No additional software to learn or upgrade required: the Thermo Scientific Eager Xperience OEA software is ready to use with FPD coupling • No need to wait for service calls – the FPD option is user installable on any FLASH 2000 model and our previous elemental analyzers (branded Carlo Erba and Fisons) • Lower owner costs compared to other alternative techniques Figure 2. Thermo Scientific FLASH 2000 elemental analyzer with FPD (Flame Photometric Detector) Trace level sulfur determinations beyond the classical OEA limit

Principle of operationThe instrument operation remains the same according to the standard FLASH 2000 sulfur analyzer, with the exception of detection by optional Flame Photometric device (Fig. 2). Samples are weighed in a tin capsule and introduced into the combustion reactor via the Thermo Scientific™ MAS™ 200R autosampler, with the proper amount of pure oxygen.

Advantages:• Lowsulfurdetermination(5-10ppm)insolid,

liquid and gas samples

• High(<100ppm-100%)andlow(5-5000ppm) sulfur detectable by the same instrument using TCD and FPD detector respectively

• Handlesallsampletypes(solid,liquid,viscousand gas)

• Nosamplepre-treatmentrequired

• Inerttubingandconnectorspreventanysulfuradsorption

• DedicatedStandardandReferenceMaterials(solid and liquid) kit for calibrating the analyzer according to the users samples is included in the package included in the OEA/FPD option

• Noadditionalsoftwaretolearnorupgraderequired: the Thermo Scientific Eager Xperience OEA software is ready to use with FPD coupling

• Noneedtowaitforservicecalls–theFPDoption is user installable on any FLASH 2000 model and our previous elemental analyzers (branded Carlo Erba and Fisons)
