    These boots were made for?

Im starting a weekly round up of all the things that have caught my eye over the week. I knowpeople that miss (ignore) the news and I find this a bit strange and I dont mean this in an elitistway. Im not looking down on anyone for not taking an interest but I do despair certain missed

opportunities. For instance, hidden in todays newspaper, amongst all the seriousness of TheLeveson inquiry and nationwide flooding is a report that polar ice is melting three times as fastas it was 20 years ago. Yes this is a serious issue but unfortunately stripped of its importance bythe professor interviewed in the article. Referring to melting sheets of ice as substantialplayers is the kind of wonderful use of the English language that makes the news such anenjoyable, all be it farcical, pastime.

You might call this exercise in summing up so very much with so very little a cop-out based onmy inherent laziness. I might say that Im just too busy to write everything that I want to. Youwould probably be right (you smug prick).

Facebook is back in the news this week after a convicted sex offender won a case to have a page

set up to monitor paedophiles removed on the basis of harassment. He had found his pictureposted on the site along with a number of threatening comments causing him to complain. Now, I wont be jumping on any anonymous bandwagon here but there are a couple ofdisturbing aspects of this. The judge at the hearing said that he has been punished by incarcerationand he is subject to substantial daily restrictions on his lifestyle. Apparently these daily restrictionsdont involve his access to the internet and, more specifically, Facebook which can be treated as

a menu for those engaging in the worst kind of villainy. His lawyers are also demanding thatthe identity of the pages creator be made public. What? Do they want his name on some sort ofregister? Lets really stretch the boundaries of political correctness and let them set up aFacebook page with a list of people who hate paedophiles on it. At least we know theyll be ableto access it and maybe we can use it to catch a few more of those despicable shits. Oops, mighthave to take this page down now.

Home of the homeless New York cropped up in the news after a NYPD officer bought abarefooted homeless gentleman a brand new pair of boots in a random act of kindness. This hasonly made the news after a tourist photographed him doing it. Its this weeks internet sensationand looks set to eclipse the inevitable cynicism that follows these sort of stories based on itsauthenticity and lack of a need for self promotion (take note Kony 2012). It offers us a starkcontrast to the Republican mayor of New York Michael Bloombergs ignorance of the homelessproblem in his city which has seen it spiral out of control. Justice can be seen as being servedhere as a random act of a blue collar worker has received the kind of positive exposurepoliticians can only dream about.

Closer to home, the man with the largest moveable surface area where his face should be, DavidCameron, is having all sorts of bother at the moment. Hes taking the rather odd stance of

listening to the recommendations made by Lord Leveson, a judge he appointed to investigatethe phone hacking scandal, and then ignoring the shit out of him and Parliament. Hes evenlosing his right leaning voters to UKIP which is kind of like The Galactic Empire losingsupporters to Jabba the Hut. The results for these elections for parliamentary seats in Rotherhamread like the obituary for the coalition. The Conservatives came in behind Labour, UKIP and theBNP. The Lib Dems couldnt even beat a local clergyman who ran independently confirming thedeath of the mythical left. Mr. Cameron and his party are suffering from a definite andunhealthy divide in this coalition which was always inevitable. The problem is, if he has gotClegg on his face, its so big he hasnt noticed.

So, tune in next week for another run down of the pointless and whatever else has grabbed mychildlike attention over the week. The big stories of the week may be missed but I guaranteethat those chosen will at least be substantial players, even more so than powerful ice.

    Phil Watson.
