Hi everyone and welcome to this “loving” February issue of the

sherwood Community Newsletter.

Traditionally, the 14th is the day to propose to your sweetheart or express your hidden love to someone by cards or fl owers.... romance isn’t dead.

How about taking out your loved one for a candlelit dinner or a trip to the theatre or cinema? Why not splash out on a dozen red roses for this special day - to show how much you care.

Let’s face it - with winter still hanging on we need something to warm our hearts and keep us going until spring.

We have an excellent competition this month for a warm soothing massage to ease those frozen muscles - see the looking good page for details on how to enter.

Put your feet up, have a brew and a biscuit while settling down to a good read of this month’s newsletter.

I cannot encourage you enough to use these businesses. Please see this magazine as my gift to you- it is a non-profi t making side of the business and we do our uttermost to please all our residents and advertisers. We cannot give everyone a copy as ALL our money comes from advertising – no other source. on Controversial Planning Application

Time to make your voice heard, last week I sent a letter and survey to every home in Bilsthorpe and Eakring asking how

people felt about proposals to build a waste disposal site known as the ‘Bilsthorpe Energy Centre’ on the former colliery site at Bilsthorpe Business Park. I would fi rst of all like to thank those of you who have already completed and returned the survey and give a nudge to those who have not had the time to get theirs back in the post yet. I will make sure the County Council are aware of all comments made.It is important to me, as your MP, that I represent the views of the people who live near this proposed project. This is why I want to hear from as many of you as possible! This application has been met with a mixed response but it is fair to say so far there is signifi cant local opposition however there are good and bad points to consider. Peel Environmental, the company behind this application, are seeking planning permission to build a waste disposal facility that will accept up to 120,000 tonnes of residual nonhazardous waste each year from across Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. A technology called plasma gasifi cation is to be used and will generate

electricity for export to the national grid.I have been told that this site once operational would provide up to 40 jobs in the area however there may be negative factors such as increased lorry movements and noise. When I have received all the survey responses back from local people I will take them down to Nottinghamshire County Council’s planning department to ensure that these people’s views are taken into consideration as the application progresses. If you have any concerns regarding the ‘Energy Centre’ please write to the county council making your thoughts clear. For further information regarding the planning application please visit:

http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/planningsearch/plandisp.aspx?AppNo=ES/2950

We must make sure the Planning Authority, (NCC) is fully informed of public opinion before they make a decision on whether to proceed.

If you wish to respond to this article, want more information or to arrange an interview with Mark Spencer please contact direct via: James E Sharpe, Offi ce Tel Number: 0115 968 1186 or Email: [email protected] Note these are not the views of The Sherwood as per our disclaimer page but a report from our local MP Mark Spencer

Vintage Valentine: Lingerie To LoveFashion by Natalie

Back in the days of Marilyn Monroe and

Grace Kelly, lingerie was designed to create the perfect shape for form fi tting clothing as well as to make ladies look gorgeous. While we’ve not quite forgotten just how important well-fi tting lingerie is to the look of our dresses and two piece ensembles, today’s utilitarian spandex doesn’t quite capture the same glamorous feel. Thankfully, this season the high street has responded with gorgeous, intricate detailing and retro shapes that are perfect for wearing underneath even our most spectacularly fi gure hugging garments.

Here are our top tips for fi nding those retro-inspired pieces and achieving that gorgeous vintage boudoir look this Valentine’s Day.

Lace, lace, lace. The vintage look is all in the details and delicate lace is beautiful when layered over satin for form fi tting pieces or used to provide soft, subtle edges. When minimal support is needed, or for small cup sizes, lace bras are elegant and natural. The soft, lightweight qualities of this traditional fabric feel comfortable and relaxed against the skin. Flattering too, lace edging provides barely there but indispensable coverage to minimal panties or the fi nishing touch to loose French knickers worn under free-form garments.

High-waisted. Briefs cut low on the leg and high on the waist were all the rage in the hour-glass era of

the 1940s and 50s and now they’re coming back. High-waisted briefs fi t incredibly well under dresses and can help to fl atten the tummy. They also look great with a matching bra, drawing attention to the narrowest part of the waist. Meanwhile, that plain, spandex look is cast aside by a satin fi nish or lacy detailing. Impressively fi nished high-waisted briefs have found their way

from the exclusive realms of vintage lingerie specialists on to the high street and they’re here to stay.

Strawberries and cream. Retro feminine pastels with ivory detailing evoke the nostalgia of by-gone Britain. Muted shades of dusky rose, peppermint green and ice blue capture a delicious candy ice-cream look. That quintessential vintage piece - the slip - is a great way to experiment with colour, while a pastel silk dressing gown can add a fun twist to classic off-white lingerie ensembles beneath.

Body sculpture. The post-war era was all about shape wear, cinching in waists and accentuating curves. A well-fi tting, sculpting bodice will keep you feeling glamorous all day and make a real difference to the look of your outfi t.

Thankfully designers have re-imagined this look in an easier to wear, more comfortable form. Don’t forget your stockings for that extra bit of vintage allure.

And when you’re ready to relax, it’s teddy time. That’s right girls, the teddy is back. Forget that fi gure-hugging soap-opera look of the 1980s, the re-imagined teddy is a loose all-in-one combination chemise with a shorts style bottom. An ideal replacement for silk pyjamas, the teddy is perfect for sleeping in or relaxing on the sofa before bed.

Supporting Your ChildAn important event for all parents if the school ‘Parents Evening’. Many parents will be pleased and proud of their child’s achievements whilst some of you may be a little disappointed and worried how to support your child. What can be done to ensure that you are supporting your child to reach their full potential?Ensure that you know if your child has any homework. If so, ensure that it is done in plenty of time and not left until the last possible moment. Sunday night syndrome only ensures that everyone gets stressed and it can ruin a lovely weekend.Ask your child’s teacher what you can do to support your child’s learning at home. Many teachers are only too happy to give advice. Many parents are easily confused by some terms used in literacy/numeracy.Are you up to date with current methodology? Do you know how to tackle grid method, Dochunking or number lines? Do you know how to tackle phonics? If the answer is NO- then ensure you know what these terms are and how to work through these methods that are so familiar to your children. There is plenty of help and advice out there to ensure parents are up to speed. Look at help guides on the internet. There are some very useful “How To” guides available.Ask if your child’s school offer sessions to help parents understand and work through

Giving our precious babies the best start in life..........

When we become a mum, the most important thing

to us is to make sure that our precious babies are well, content and happy. That doesn't change, as a busy mum with 3 growing children; I always want to do what is best for them. When my twin boys were tiny bundles baby massage was recommended to me, as it can really help with their early development and such things as wind, constipation and the symptoms of colic, improving sleep patterns and improving the general wellbeing of your baby aswell as promoting the importance of your wellbeing as a mum.It worked so well for my boys, that when my daughter was born, I looked for a similar class. In fact, I enjoyed the whole experience so much that I have now qualifi ed as a Baby Massage and Yoga Teacher with an organisation called MamaBabyBliss, whose philosophy is all about the health and wellbeing of both mum and baby. I am really looking forward to running courses all around the Mansfi eld area to provide opportunities for mums (and dads) to experience the benefi ts of massage and yoga for their babies. If you would like to learn more about the benefi ts of Baby Massage and Yoga for you and your baby, meet some other mums and babies and just spend some quality time with your precious little one, then look out for details of courses coming soon to this area.Like to know more? Please call or text me on: 07900 550736 or you can fi nd me on facebook

Reluctant Gardener: FebruaryQuick tips for the month of freezing Feb!• Dig over the beds and borders

mixing in organic material, if the ground is not frozen. Forking the soil aerates and brings pests to the surface for the birds.

• With the risk of frost and snow leave the vulnerable plants protected with fl eece and raise pots off the ground a little using a brick or pottery stands.

• Apply a generous application of dry mulch to young trees and shrubs to protect their roots from freezing conditions.

• When the ground isn’t frozen, start new beds and borders - marking shapes with sand trickled from a plastic bottle, also start removing the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over.

• Remember not to let rotting damp leaves accumulate around alpine plants - they will suffer if left damp too long. Leaves on lawns not taken by worms can be cleared up too.

• During a settled few days, clear paths of weeds, check walls, clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure your heaters are working. Insulation just using bubble wrap will make a difference to your heating bill.

• Clean and repair your garden tools or send to a repair-person to service them. Book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot, especially at the base of the legs.

• Paint sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative (animal friendly) using a stiff brush or a modern sprayer to do the job quicker and can get into awkward shapes.

• Don’t forget the birds - some peanuts, fat balls and other treats will help them during this time of scarce food. Avoid bread as this lacks the energy content to help birds survive, but is better than nothing.

• Looking forward to Spring now, lighter nights and perhaps some warmer sunny days too.

Happy Gardening Andy

YOUR CHANCE TO VISIT THE POLICE CELLS - VOLUNTARILY!

Nottinghamshire’s Deputy Police and

Crime Commissioner, Chris Cutland, is leading a campaign designed to see more members of the community in police custody cells – but voluntarily.Ms Cutland is the

lead fi gure on the Commissioner’s Independent Custody Scheme, which is managed by the PCC’s offi ce. The Scheme, which has received local and national acclaim, is seeking new members, willing to visit the force’s custody suites to check on the conditions and welfare of those in custody.Independent Custody Visitors make unannounced visits to the cells where, in addition to inspecting the facilities, they can ask to meet detainees before making a report on their fi ndings.Ms Cutland explained: “This scheme provides confi dence in the system. It gives an impartial and independent viewpoint on the way detainees are being looked after, and highlights any shortcomings or problems with the facilities.“Custody visitors tell me that it is an interesting job, and I think it is reassuring for the public and the custody staff to know that the custody cells are subject to an objective external opinion.“If there is a problem or complaint, most issues are dealt with

at the time. However, more serious issues are forwarded to the police to resolve and the outcome is reported back to me.”The scheme and the visitors are totally independent and the role includes talking with those who are detained, checking the suites for cleanliness, making sure there are adequate stocks of supplies and raising any issues which may need to be addressed whilst detainees are in custody.Ms Cutland added: “The role provides a unique opportunity to give a transparent and impartial assessment of the situation in the cells and both the Commissioner and I are proud of the scheme’s achievements.” To apply, you must be over 18 and live in Nottinghamshire. Although this is a voluntary role, expenses are paid and naturally full training is given. Visits take place at the Bridewell in Nottingham as well suites in Newark and Mansfi eld. Calling Gardeners and Wildlife LoversAre you interested in the wildlife that visits your garden? Would you like to take a more active approach? If ‘yes’ to both then all you would have to do is spend a little time just sitting by your living room window watching the birds in your garden. You may not realise it, but you can take an active part in helping wildlife by going no further than your own armchair.

By participating in the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme, you can monitor birds and other wildlife which visit your garden on a weekly basis. You then send your observations, either on-line or on paper, to the BTO and they analyse the data from the thousands of people who participate in the scheme. It couldn’t be simpler and you don’t have to be a serious birdwatcher to do it. As long as you are able to recognise common garden birds that is suffi cient knowledge to get involved.

So, who are the BTO? The British Trust for Ornithology is an independent charitable research institute whose work involves investigating the population movements and ecology of wild birds throughout the British Isles and beyond. It is they who have discovered and recorded the decline of the House

Sparrow, the increase of Goldfi nches and the spread of disease in Greenfi nches. On receiving the information submitted by garden birdwatchers from all over the country, the BTO analyses the data, the result of which alerts us to any changes in bird populations, either nationally or locally. Their fi ndings can reveal why birds visit gardens at different times of the year, how much supplementary feeding affects birds and what other factors infl uence their lives, e.g.cats, Sparrowhawks, disease.

I really encourage you to get involved in this project as you are not only helping towards our understanding of birds but you will also receive immense pleasure from recording them and, without doubt, you will learn a great deal more about your garden.

For more information visit their website on www.bto.org/gardenbirdwatch or contact them for a free enquiry pack, [email protected] / 01842 750050, c/o Jean Parrott

Jean is a BTO Garden BirdWatch Ambassador for Nottinghamshire and is able to arrange talks to a wide group of people including gardening societies, natural history groups, WI, Rotary Clubs and U3A. If you would be interested in having such a talk, please contact Jean at [email protected] / 0770 4809741

Film Review: The Monuments MenRelease: Friday 21st FebruaryStarring: George Clooney, Bob Balaban, Jean Dujardin, Hugh Bonneville, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman and Matt DamonBased on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

Hi and welcome to our new looks corporate section in The Sherwood

Each month we will offer a few tips to keep your business busy in 2014. Also some great local businesses advertise

here to help you with specialist advice. Plus lots of networking events. Our magazine is perfect for low cost effective advertising and it works. So if you want to talk to us about how we could help you give us a call on: your number here Andy……Or if you currently advertise and want to make any changes again we are here to help. I am a qualifi ed and experienced marketing consultant so I can offer more than just placing your advert in for you I can make sure it hits the people you want to reach with the correct message.Check out our Aunty AIDA’s fi ve top tips for advertising that works this month:-Aunty AIDA is vital for all advertisers. The biggest mistake advertisers make is what is known as ‘profi le’ advertising

rather than ‘Call to action’ advertising. Only rich businesses can profi le advertise – all this does is raise awareness. What a business investing hard earned money wants is their phone ringing, customers coming to the stores and increased visitation to their website. So how do you achieve this:-

• A-Stands for Attention – Grab attention with words like FREE, Quality, Questions work great too if you are offering answers to people’s problems. A restaurant advert may say – Do you want to make your partner fall in love with you again on Valentine’s Day? Well book a delicious romantic meal now!

• I – Interest – Tell me more – they are offering quality goods, delivery on time for Easter, great descriptions and pictures – Ooh I am creating a picture of a beautiful home and you are putting good emotions into the advert – see a DFS advert if you want evidence. Lots of images of happy families

• D – Desire – Ooh yes I want that. I want my house to be beautiful for spring or a lovely lawn for the summer. I want everyone admiring my home including me!

• Action - Call now! Not tomorrow or next month – Put strong deadlines on your advert. This offer ends by Friday this week! Visit our website NOW to download a voucher for this FREE offer. By the way FREE’s even small are better than discounts – not easily fooled! Also please ensure your phones are manned and websites up and live.

Friends of Tippings Wood Well we’ve had the shortest day so the theory is we are heading

towards Spring. Its been mild but don’t forget the birds who can

still struggle to fi nd enough to eat in the cold conditions. It is

such a pleasure and a privilege to see the birds in your garden

and feeding them in winter improves their prospects of surviving

into the breeding season. However, it can be an expensive

business in these tough economic times so how can we still

continue? Make every grain count! Don’t put too much out at

one time as it goes soggy and mouldy. Big birds, like wood

pigeons and magpies and of course squirrels are so greedy

and hog the lot but you could use feeder cages so smaller birds

get a look in. A small amount of kitchen scraps, such as bread,

Rainworth Parish Council Chairman - Mark Buttery. Vice Chair - Linda Tift Winter has been pretty kind so far but keep the winter grit and salt handy as we still could get the bad weather rolling in. Bins are full but please remember this is for use on the highways not private property. Winter grit and salt can be purchased from builders merchants and DIY outlets and is very useful to keep at home and even in your car.

Continue to report potholes and streetlights either directly to the Highways Department at NCC on 0300 500 8080 or to the Parish offi ce.

The Boundary Review consultation has now closed and both the Parish Council and many residents have registered their strong objections to proposals. We must now wait until March to see if the Community has been listened to.

Rainworth operates an open and transparent policy. We welcome and encourage residents to view the website or visit the offi ce where your questions and concerns will be answered.

Councillors are in and out of the Parish Offi ce daily and always happy to assist with any problems, as is our Parish Clerk, Dawn Jones who can be contacted on 01623 490259 or [email protected].

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage SocietyOur fi rst meeting of the new year was a great success. It was our fi rst meeting in our new venue, The Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare complex. Thanks to Mark Tiplady, the manager of the Welfare who was very helpful and ensured the meeting went smoothly. Our main speaker of the evening was Tim Preston who gave us a comprehensive and amusing presentation about Wollaton Hall, the ancestral home of the Whilloughby family for 400 years. The Hall, on the outskirts of Nottingham, was built on the profi ts of early coal mining and is now owned by Nottingham City Council and is open to the public. It houses both natural history and industrial museums. After the break, Alan Higgins told us about the visits made by the African explorer and missionary, Dr Livingstone, to Newstead Abbey. The owner of Newstead at the time was Captain Webb who met Livingstone in Africa when ‘big game’ hunting. A strong friendship was formed and

Livingstone was persuaded to visit Newstead on a number of occasions and during one visit he wrote his famous book on the Zambesi and its tributaries. In later years Newstead was visited by Mr H M Stanley, who earlier had discovered Livingstone in Africa with the famous words, ‘Dr Livingstone I presume’.During the break there was a display of our archive photographs, our library books and history magazines. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 4th, in the Function Room of Blidworth Welfare, Mansfi eld Road, Blidworth. Our main speaker will be Val Henstock , a professional tourist guide talking about her life as a local ‘Blue Badge Guide’.

Blidworth Parish Council (BPC)BPC wish all residents a Happy New Year. It’s diffi cult to remember where it went. As for BPC, 2013 was the most successful of recent years. Blidworth in Bloom had its most successful year to date – Blidworth Oaks Primary School won Gold Award for their work on the Allotments, fl ower beds & also planting fl owers outside the Community Centre. The village won Silver, plus a Special Award for our War Memorial Garden. On Remembrance Day Parade, the War Memorial & garden looked brilliant & everything went like clockwork.

The Annual Switch on Event at the Welfare followed by

the Annual Pensioners Party at the Welfare was a busy week. Over 90 Blidworth Senior Citizens came to the Pensioner party & had a great time, with good entertainment from Blidworth Oaks & Joseph Whitaker schools.

Finally, we felt the Christmas Lights this year were excellent and we plan to improve these for this year.

Cornwater ClubJess Plaskett has been a Cornwater Club member for nearly ten years and confesses that joining the club back in 2004 was the ‘best thing she has ever done”. When Jess fi rst joined she was on crutches waiting for a hip replacement and was struggling to move around. A friend of hers had seen a leafl et about Cornwater Club in the Doctors’ surgery and had shown it to Jess, who initially was reluctant to take it any further. However, after a visit from Loris Lester who ran the club at the time, she agreed to come along for a session — she has never looked back.Attending the club has improved Jess’s health. She enjoys her time at the club. Jess has many friends at the club whom she looks forward to seeing and chatting to. Jess is pictured with fellow member, Gordon Turner, with their latest artistic creations.Jess has been able to volunteer as an escort on the bus, helping other members on and off and escorting them to their doors. She is an avid knitter and has produced many items which we have sold at our various fundraisers. She also makes great

Bards at BlidworthSt. Valentine’s Day began in the 5th Century to commemorate the story of a martyred priest who believed that young people should marry for love. The Emperor Claudius wanted such marriages banned. Bishop Valentine was subsequently imprisoned and then beheaded. The ritual of sending a card which declared love seems to be based on a story in which the priest sent a little note to the jailer’s daughter which simply said ‘from your valentine’ - having fallen in love with her.Love is probably the most written about subject in the world both in poetry and in song and many a folk song tells of unrequited love. There is a tendency to think of romantic love when the word is used, but there are many forms of love other than this: love for one’s children, relatives, close friends and even for humanity itself. There was an outpouring of love at Nelson Mandella’s funeral. Archbishop Desmond Tutu refers to ubuntu, which at the very least, refers to the wholeness of our species. The movement for Peace and Reconciliation refl ects compassion which in turn refl ects love for All. Contemporary phrases used by poets and musicians: Peace; Spread the Love; Respect... foster an outlook of living and working for a world where people care because they are essentially loving beings and the word can spread through poetry and song. We see this all around us if we care to look at basic kindnesses that people are committing every day, every

second, but many an editor will focus on a negative story with an aggressive headline, with what seems to be the excuse that ‘this is what people want’. Are we sure about this? Do we have to believe all of what the papers say? How do negative stories affect the mind and our subsequent outlook on life? Does the negative become ‘normal’ - more acceptable than the positive?I was recently at ‘Jack’s (John Richardson’s) funeral. A lovely, kindly man and such a talented musician. What a massive crowd of people turned out! There was overwhelming warm-heartedness in the atmosphere. I heard the priest say that Jack and his wife fell in love when they were 17 and had a long and loving marriage. An iconic fi gure at Mansfi eld folk club and beyond and his legacy will live on because of love for this local man will make that possible.Christine Michael, http:www.thynkspublications.co.uk

Rotary Club of Sherwood ForestOur 33rd Proms Concert was a huge success. We thank all businesses and Jones & Co who sponsored our Concert, and members of the public who came to hear us and join in. This year our performers were joined by ‘Community Voices’ but the singing by pupils of Walesby Primary School stole the show with their very young boy soloist who took everyone’s breath away. Your generosity raised over £2,000 and an additional £349.17 was raised by the ‘Pennies from Heaven’ collection. This extra money now enabled our Rotary Club to pay for 5 AquaBoxes to be sent out to the Philippines Disaster. The water pump in an Aqua Box can turn dirty water into drinking water and there was plenty of interest shown in this simple equipment that can save many lives following a natural disaster. Walesby Primary School has now invited us to come to their school to demonstrate to the pupils how an AquaBox gives hope to people who have lost

everything.

Charitable Christmas Collections – Thank you to all who gave generously by supporting Rotary at both the Edwinstowe and Ollerton Christmas Lights ‘switch on’ and at our store collections at Asda & Tesco. Our stalls at the Christmas Markets had Handmade Christmas Decorations and Chocolate Christmas Trees. With your help we are able to give help to others and we thank everyone who made these events possible. Special thanks must go to Tilly, the Donkey whose appearance gained much fun and admiration particularly from the children who were surprised to fi nd a Donkey ready to neigh Happy Christmas!

The Thursday Club – Christmas for our Club would not be the same without our Christmas visit to the Thursday Club’s Christmas Party and to catch a glimpse of Father Christmas! Each year some of the money Rotary raises during the year is given to buy presents for those who weekly meet at the Thursday Club and the volunteers who week in, week out,

Church Article: At this time of year our thoughts turn to love. We use the word a lot in general conversation: ‘I love this colour’, ‘I love X Factor/Coronation Street/Pointless’, ‘I love my Mum’s meat and potato pie’.‘Love’ is everywhere it seems! The word trips off our tongue almost fl ippantly. But love is much more than this. These words written by Khalil Gibran express something of what love is:

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; For love is suffi cient unto love. When you love you should not say, ‘God is in my heart, ‘but rather, ‘I am in the heart of God.’ And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it fi nds you worthy, directs your course. Love has no other desire but to fulfi l itself. But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy; To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
