    1.1 Introduction to Risk

,rom a general oint of view Riskis the quantifable likelihood o loss or less-than-

expected returns. ,rom a much broader oint of view Riskis the potential o losing

something o value, weighed against the potential to gain something o value.

Values (such asphysical health, social status, emotional well being or fnancial

wealth can be gained or lost when taking risk resulting rom a given action, activity

and!or inaction, oreseen or unoreseen. "isk can also be defned as the intentional

interaction with uncertainty. "isk perceptionis the sub#ective #udgment people

make about the severity o a risk, and may vary person to person. $ny human

endeavor carries some risk, but some are much riskier than others.

Riskcan be de(ned in a variety of ways. -owever we de(ne risk as a characteristicof reality or risks as threatening agents% the essential feature here is uncertainty."ithout uncertainty there is no risk% only clear danger. et us then see some of themost common de(nitions.

current debt. *nvestors are comensated for assuming credit risk by way of interest

ayments from the borrower or issuer of a debt obligation. Credit risk is closely tied

to the otential return of an investment% the most notable being that the yields on
