I. Introduction
1
Online grading system can be considered as revolutionizing the process of
computing and most of all students grade, it promises to eliminate problems that are
present using printed grading sheets and speed the cyclical functions of the instructors
during each school semester. From the time load assignments are given to handling
students and finally issuing their class cards. The creation of Online Grading System
may cause skepticism or criticism to arise coming from those who are close minded and
illiterate to technology.
Teachers all over the nation have discovered that when they utilize an online
grading system, they are able to quickly and easy update, track, and grade student
performance in much less time than they ever thought possible. Parents and students
also enjoy being able to take part in an online grading system. This is because students
and parents can access an online grading system with a password and can track
grades and assignments whenever they need to.
This helps students become more aware of their grades and also helps parents
involved in their child’s schooling. And as any teacher will tell you, when parents and
teachers can work together to help a child succeed, that child has a much better chance
of getting the most out of his or her schooling. The other great thing about an online
grading system is that it can also be used to create report cards, assignments reports,
class grade lists, student GPA, seating charts, roll sheets, attendance reports, and
more.
For the student, the grading system lets them know how much they successfully
were able to give the teacher of what they learned, for the teacher, if it is an objective
system; it shows fairness to students and parents, for the school board, it shows a
fairness doctrine and how well their employees are doing their jobs. With grading, there
will be no mad rush amongst students for percentages, as grading system puts a
specific range of percentage in one category. Earlier colleges use to close admissions
open, say 81.5, while a student with 81.4 wouldn’t get the seat… which was totally
absurd, but with the new rule, every students that gets similar grade, for e.g., grade b
(covering between 75- 85 percent) has a chance of getting admission in the same
2
college, and it depends on the college whether to take him or not, depending on other
factors.
II. Locale of the Study
The research was conducted in Columban College- College Department in
Olongapo City. It is a Catholic Institution dedicated to serve the needs of the city and
the surrounding provinces of Zmables and Bataan. Columban College was first known
as Naval Reservation Junior College and the Lindayag Family was the first to administer
it. In 1961, the Lindayag’s passed the institution to the Columbans Father’s for the
prelature of Nulius of Iba. And in 1962 the institution was then called Columabn College
Inc. It has been headed by the bishops of Iba. And its first director was Rev Thomas L.
Convery, SSC and Rev. Paul O’ MAlley, SSC as his assisteant. The Columbans Sister’s
helped in the administrative and teaching program of the college ein 1962-1963. The
parish of St. Columban was also inaugurated in that same year with Rev. Paul O’ Malley
as the pariest Priest. Year 1965, when father Convery was succeeded by Rev. William
F. Sullivan, SSC and it was followed by Father Godsill, Father Cannon and Father
Lyons.
The administration of the college was handed over the Columbans Father’s to
the Vincentian Fathers in 1963 to continue its educative mission, And in 1989, the
Daughters of Charity took over when the contrast of the Vincentian Fathers expired. A
daughter of Charity is a company of consecrated women which was founded by St.
Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Manilac.
When year 1993 came, Columban College signals new direction with most
Reverend Deogracias Iniguez, Jr. as the head of the Diocesan Schools, decided to take
to over the administration of the college, Columban College is situated in a 1.2 hectare
lot and bounded by Magsaysay Drive, Lindayag Street and perimeter Road.
Different groups of administration for Columban College had come and left the
college. Whatever progress the school had accomplished, it is due to the painstaking
fulfillment of the institutional mission of the college. Tangible achievements could be
seen in the physical existence of its improved properties.

III. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The studies main objective is to generate a system for students to make easier
for their grade process. As you can see in Figure 1, starts at Students. Next are the
instructors who evaluate grades of the students. Grades serve as step 3. When it’s
done, the instructors passes all the records they made to the office administrator, they
will transfer it to the main database of the school. After inserting all the records in
database, it will process, and after the process the result will show automatically in
computer. And, when the grading process is done, right away it keeps the record
through database. This information would benefit both the students and instructors.

IV. Statement of the Problem
General:

DATABASE
Students
Instructors
Process
Grade Input through System
Result/Computer Output
The general problem of the study is how to develop an online grade processing
system. Most of the times, students are not informed immediately of their grades after
every grading period (Prelim, Midterm, and Finals). This is because of none or late
computation of grades resulting to late submission of grades. This kind of practice is
most convenient in the part of the students, teachers and also the Office of
Administration. The purpose of the research is to answer the ff. questions:
Specific:
1. How will this project improve the grading system in Columban College?
2. What security measures will this project possess to ensure the safety of the
grades and records?
3. What will be the benefits of this online grading system to the students and
professors of Columban College?
V. Hypothesis
This study’s main objective is to provide a way of simplifying grades processing
while addressing the current problems that the students, instructors, deans and office of
the Admission and Registration. The following statements would provide more details
and support the main objective:
The development of a webpage that would serve as the entry point for encoding
the academic records of students under a certain instructor, making it available and
accessible anywhere;
Linking into the registrar’s database for easy information extraction in terms of
students’ list enrolled in a certain subject, making the system more workable; and
Formulation of a policy that would help motivate instructors to finish grades processing
before the due date is reached.
VI. Significance of the Study
This study will benefit the following entities specially by:
Students
5
1. Students will immediately know their class standing; this can assure which subject/s
should be taken the following semester.
2. If the student is marked failed or incomplete, he will have minimal time to make
necessary corrections because he was notified of his standing earlier.
3. The students are well updated with their standing with the actual grades that they
receive so they reconcile grades that they expect.
Deans and Instructors
1. This will lessen the work of the deans and instructors in computing the grades of the
students.
2. The collection of grades from the members of their faculty will, if not, consume a little
amount of time than it usually does.
3. This can make checking of reporting grades easier than running through all the
papers.
Office of Admission and Registration (A.O.R)
1. It will lessen the work of the Admission and Registration officer.
2. Improvement on the policy of grade computation and submission that would indirectly
also benefit Columban College.
3. It will increase the standard of Columban College.
VII. Scope and Limitation
The following enumerated are those scopes of this study.
1. Focuses on the computation of Student Grades
a. The system itself will calculate the result based upon the encoded academic
records and performance of students;
2. Submission of these grades by the instructors through the internet
a. Grades could reached the office of the Dean even through the use of the
System’s Website;
3. Provides information of instructors loads assignment
6
a. The system can let the instructor, and Dean view the loads he is handling for
the semester;
4. For the Testing stage, it is only concerned with instructors coming from college of
computer studies.
a. A plan to implement this system would then be tested first if it will meet the
necessary requirements by having it used for the faculty of the CCS;
5. Viewing of grades by the students
a. The system as one of its features will enable the students to access their
grades online.
6. Record Keeping
a. The Admission and Registration office will easily determined and access the
grades of the students.
And these are the limitations, which are not part of this study:
1. Checking of test papers( Quizzes and major exams)
a. The manual checking to be done on completed test papers is beyond this
study;
2. Grading recitation, projects and assignments
a. Instructors have their own way of giving grades on recitation, projects and
assignments which the system will not be handling;
3. Assigning loads to instructors.
a. The researcher knows that this function is the sole responsibility of the dean
of the respective colleges.
4. Accomplishing class cards
a. Filling up the grades of students on the class cards after the computation of
grades is also not part of this study.
VII. Definition of terms
