The 19th Annual Summit County Parade of HomesHosted by Summit County Builders Association

Board of Trustee ProfileWendy Wolfe

Join The Summit Foundation in touring some of this year’s best homes at the 19th Annual Summit County Parade of Homes. Scheduled for the weekends of September 21 – 22 and September 28 – 29, the tour includes new construction and remodels of both single family and multi-family units.

This Summit County event has become one of the state’s premier home tours, with homes open each weekend day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The $15 admission fee is valid for all four days and allows ticket holders to tour the homes at their leisure.

The Summit Foundation will be staffing multiple homes throughout Summit County and seeks volunteer assistance at these homes. Attendance is expected to run about 4,000 over the two weekends and ticket sellers are needed to staff homes in three hour shifts. To donate a few hours of your time, please contact Elisabeth Lawrence, The Summit Foundation’s Events and Marketing Coordinator at 970.453.5970. Volunteers are provided free entry to all Parade homes. This is a great opportunity to tour the latest in home design while assisting The Summit Foundation.

If you ask Wendy Wolfe to reflect on her life and career, she will tell you it consists of two distinctly different parts. She grew up in Indiana and graduated from Purdue University in 1978 with a degree in Mass Communications. Her first career job was working in TV in Elkhart, Indiana. Two years later, she got a call from a TV station in Colorado Springs and decided to move west to capture her sense of adventure. Wendy eventually transferred to a station in Denver and nine months after that was on her way to Orlando to start a new career at Disney. There she met Jack Wolfe in Disney Traditions. Disney proved, once again, that dreams really do come true. “We were married about a year later and shortly thereafter we moved to France for the challenging Euro Disney project,” Wendy recounted.

Jack and Wendy returned to Orlando where Wendy was promoted to VP of Parks and Resorts Marketing for Walt Disney World. “It was a fantastic career opportunity but there was just one problem. Jack and I really missed Colorado and the mountain lifestyle,” confessed Wendy.

In 1995, we made the decision to return to Colorado. Jack was hired by East West Partners in Breckenridge.

“This is where I started part two of my life,” claimed Wendy. In 1996 they adopted their son, Alex. Wendy also discovered something else, her love for working with the nonprofit community. “All I need is a good cause and I’m hooked,” chuckled Wendy.

Wendy served on the board of the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance and The Summit Medical Center Health Foundation. Then in early 2012 she ran for a seat on the Breckenridge Town Council. At that time Wendy was asked to join The Summit Foundation (TSF) Board. “I was thrilled to be asked,” Wendy related. “Jack served on TSF Board for a number of years and we got to know so many people in the community. We are moved by how the organization has made a difference in so many people’s lives. If you’re looking for where the heart starts beating in Summit County you need look no further than The Summit Foundation.”

The Summit County Library Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) entity formed in 1991. Its mission is to serve as an advocate for the Summit County Library System and to provide financial support beyond the Library’s normal operating expenditures when unanticipated needs arise and for capital projects. The Foundation is served by an all-volunteer Board of Directors drawn from interested residents of Summit County. In recent years, the Foundation has funded numerous children’s reading programs, expansion of the downloadable-book and audio book collection, the Library’s community relations activities, and the purchase of small capital items such as photocopiers, computers, and most recently a new sign for the North Branch of the Library in Silverthorne.

As a result of a public-private partnership established in 2012 between the Board of County Commissioners, the Town of Breckenridge Council, the Summit County Library Foundation, and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance, the Library Foundation is engaged as a lead capital fund raiser to facilitate the rehabilitation of the Old Schoolhouse on Harris St. in Breckenridge. The project will include a new, expanded South Branch library for Breckenridge, a community center, a modernized Speakeasy Theater, and several non-profit groups located in Summit County.

Of the total projected cost of $7.4 million, the Library Foundation and Heritage Alliance have a fund-raising target of $2 million.

Early on it was realized that strong local community support would be necessary if this goal was to be achieved and therefore an approach was made to The Summit Foundation to elicit their advice and financial support. The Summit Foundation generously agreed to support the project and as a result The Library Foundation has been able to secure other substantial donations from a wide range of businesses, individuals, and foundations within Summit County and the State of Colorado.

To enable grant decisions to be made in a timely manner for the nonprofit organizations, The Summit Foundation recently changed its annual fall application deadline from August to October.

Nonprofit grant applications are due to The Summit Foundation by noon on Friday October 4. Award decisions and notifications to the nonprofit representatives will be made by mid-December.

The grant application is currently available through The Summit Foundation’s website, summitfoundation.org. Applications may be submitted through either the online format or a downloadable and printable document. The Foundation has also (do we hear hallelujah?!) eliminated the requirement of 25 copies.

Nonprofit representatives may also stop by The Summit Foundation office in Breckenridge for an application. Any organization planning on submitting a grant request to The Summit Foundation must use a current application form.

Requests are accepted from Summit County and Neighboring Community nonprofit organizations that are tax exempt under the provisions of Section 501(c)3 and 170 (b)(1)(a)(i.V.I) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Prior to submitting a grant request, first time applicants are asked to contact The Summit Foundation’s Executive Director, Lee Zimmerman, at 970.453.5970 to discuss the organization and intended proposal.

For as long as we can remember, The Summit Foundation has been blessed by the photography skills of Bob Winsett. This year, Bob stepped down as our official photographer (much of the work provided pro bono) and we must say THANK YOU for his wonderful skill in capturing our donors, board members, volunteers, nonprofit representatives, and scholarship recipients in each of our quarterly newsletters, as well as The Foundation’s annual reports and marketing publications.

The Summit Foundation is honored to begin working with Carl Scofield in capturing our various audiences. Carl lives in Breckenridge where he has made a successful career as a full-time freelance photographer for more than 25 years. His work has been published both nationally and internationally in many books and magazines including Ski, Skiing, Powder, Outside, and Sunset. Living and working in a ski resort, Carl has become a very diverse photographer shooting sports, skiing, food, products, people, architectural interiors, aerials, weddings, and about anything else he is asked to do.

We are thrilled to be working with Carl and can’t say enough thank you’s to Bob Winsett for his years of dedication to The Summit Foundation.

Please welcome Deb Crook to The Summit Foundation’s Board of TrusteesIn June, The Summit Foundation Board of Trustees elected Deb Crook to serve a two-year term on the Board of Trustees. Deb has 22 years of experience in Summit County in public health as a staff nurse and then as the Director. In the last two years of her employment, Deb became the Director of Summit County Health and Human Services. She retired from this position in December of 2012. Deb’s passion for the public’s health opened the door for many opportunities to work in the Summit County health and human service community which includes many nonprofit organizations as well as government and for profit entities. She has been involved in a number of community projects including Summit Community

Care Clinic, the school-based health clinic, Centering Pregnancy, and Bristlecone Homecare and Hospice. She has also been instrumental in a number of community health assessments and grant applications over the years. Deb is currently a member of the St. Anthony Summit Medical Center Board of Trustees, the Advisory Board of Summit Community Care Clinic, and the Advisory Board of the Intermountain Nurse Family Partnership.

We welcome Deb and her tremendous background in health and human services to the Board of The Summit Foundation.

There have been few times when charitable giving actually benefited those in a high tax bracket. However, the perfect storm came together in 2010 when the IRS allowed anyone to transfer assets from an IRA to a Roth IRA where the assets grow tax free, but more importantly they come out tax free for the rest of your life and your beneficiaries lives. The reason the IRS allowed this was to increase the tax revenue from the taxes due on a Roth IRA conversion. It takes about 15 – 16 years to break even on this conversion. Since most of us are into instant gratification this isn’t an option.

What is the solution? By giving to a charity’s NEW Pooled Income Fund established in either 2012 or 2013 the tax deduction is double or, in some cases, triple that of other charitable giving strategies. A Pooled Income Fund is a trust where you donate assets and share prorata in the income for the rest of your life. A second beneficiary’s life may be included if you desire. For example, if an individual age 65 contributes assets to a NEW Pooled Income Fund their charitable deduction is approximately 73% of the amount contributed. For a couple both age 65 the tax deduction is 67%. By using this tax deduction to shelter the taxes on a Roth IRA conversion this can greatly increase the after-tax retirement income of the donor.

Cash, appreciated stock, real estate, and C Corp business shares can be contributed. All capital gains are eliminated, which greatly increases the benefit of this strategy. There are limitations on charitable deductions — they are limited to 50% of your adjusted gross income and 30% if appreciated assets are donated — so it’s important to discuss this strategy with your financial advisor and accountant to see how it would benefit you and your family.

In November, the 23rd annual celebration of National Philanthropy Day in Summit County will honor outstanding philanthropic and volunteer achievements in ten categories. Celebrated throughout our country, National Philanthropy Day is a special day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the individuals and organizations whose contributions improve the quality of our lives, our communities, and our world.

Sponsored once again by Wells Fargo Bank and Climax Molybdenum, the evening is one of the most emotional and fulfilling events that The Summit Foundation hosts each year. The achievements of both the nominees and winners demonstrate why we all feel so blessed to spend time in Summit County and be a part of the activities of the charitable organizations. Over the past 22 years, 222 individuals, families, community organizations, and businesses have been recognized for their generosity and support to our community.

In 2012, Josh Blanchard, Jen Cawley, Kimberly Kissmann, Sara Metzger, Don Parsons, Laura Pless, High Country Conservation Center, Summit County Cares campaign, and FIRC bag ladies were recognized for their exemplary achievements.

Nominations for outstanding board members, citizens, educators, professionals, philanthropists, volunteers, youth, youth mentors, businesses, and nonprofit organizations are welcome. Nomination forms are available through The Summit Foundation website, summitfoundation.org or at the office in Breckenridge. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, October 11, 2013.

The recognition event will be held at Copper Conference on Friday, November 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Pooled Income Fund and Roth IRA Conversion

Through the end of 2013, donors 70 years and 6 months of age or older can make gifts from IRA accounts to one or more charities without first incurring income tax on the withdrawal. This means donors can direct an amount to The Summit Foundation with no income tax liability. The IRA Rollover may provide individuals an excellent opportunity to make a gift during their lifetime from an asset that would be subject to multiple levels of taxation if it remained in the donor’s taxable estate.

The provision allows a taxpayer who is 70½ or older to contribute a total of $100,000 in IRA assets to one or more qualified charities. The gift

must pass directly from the IRA sponsor to the charity and the payout can satisfy the required minimal distribution. The donor gets no deduction, but neither does he or she have to report the payouts as income. The benefit is currently scheduled to expire December 31, 2013.

The Summit Foundation was lucky enough to have Candy Emerson join us this summer as our Events & Marketing Assistant, where she worked on our 26th Annual Great Rubber Duck Race. Candy has been a professional fundraiser for over 15 years. She is originally from Philadelphia, PA but moved to Breckenridge, CO this past February to advance her career in creating her own fundraising and development consulting firm and explore what the majestic Rocky Mountains have to offer.

She has worked for small grass roots organizations such as The Wellness Community of Philadelphia, The Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center, and Associated Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired; large educational institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania in their Department of Institutional Advancement; and within the Jewish community at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. In addition, she has had the opportunity to work abroad in Guayaquil, Ecuador in international fundraising for Juntos Con Los Ninos (Together with

the Children) and teach high school, college, and adults English as a Second Language and courses on Creative Communications, Public Speaking, and the meaning of Philanthropy and Development at Casa Grande Universidad and Universidad Ecotec.

She holds a B.A. from Cedar Crest College and Certificate of Non-Profit Management from the University of Pennsylvania along with a Masters degree in Philanthropy and Development from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. She is board member for The Summit County Library Foundation and a volunteer with Animal Rescue of the Rockies in Breckenridge and Revision International in Denver.

Her passions include exploring the great outdoors but most of all the endurance sport of triathlons. She has been competing since 2006 and since then completed two Ironmans: Arizona 2009 and Lake Placid 2012. Her most recent was the Boulder 70.3 in early August. She lives with her boyfriend, Nick Frey, owner of Boo Bicycles and their two dogs, Bo and Monroe.

The Summit Foundation hosted its 26th annual Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Golf Tournament on June 8 and 9. This popular scramble tournament sold out in early May, with 144 golfers vying to win the first place position.

Saturday evening began with a Welcome Party dinner and Calcutta auction hosted by Vail Resorts Echo. Skyy Vodka provided spirits to enjoy the evening while Boston comedian, Jimmy Dunn, provided plenty of entertainment and emceed the lively auction. Breckenridge Mayor John Warner hosted a breakfast on Sunday morning prior to the 10 am shotgun start.

After a beautiful and warm day of tournament play at the Breckenridge Golf Club, the team of David Suchomski, Doug Suchomski, Josh Knipp, and Sean Meachum won with an outstanding score of 55. Players enjoyed a delicious on-course BBQ provided by John Daisy of Fatty’s Pizzeria and the Breckenridge Restaurant Association. At the Interval International awards reception, the top five teams were honored with prizes; along with individual prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, most accurate drive, and longest putt.

The annual tournament raised a record setting $71,000 for The Summit Foundation’s grants and scholarship program. The Foundation is thankful to all the players for their continued support of this long-standing tournament as well as title sponsor Grand Lodge on Peak 7. The Town of Breckenridge and the Breckenridge Golf Club were generous hosts.
