Geographic+Information+Systems+Report++
My name is Daris Piper. I have had the opportunity of working as the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technologist for McLeod Lake Indian Band since the end of January 2014. So what does GIS do for McLeod Lake Indian Band?
A geographic information system lets us visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. GIS is being used in almost every department of McLeod Lake Indian Band including Land Management; Economic Development; Land Referral Office; Public Works and Housing; Forestry and AGA Planning.
GIS has given Land Management and the Public Works/ Housing Department the ability to map reserve roads and house lots for emergency service personnel which can also be used for evacuation planning purposes in the event it is needed.
In the Forestry Department we have been undergoing a quality assurance project for cut block boundaries, harvesting, silviculture and other forestry information for areas McLeod Lake Indian Band gained as part of settlement lands after adhesion to Treaty 8.
We have used GIS in coal tenure application referrals as part of the Land Referral Office’s efforts to ensure more informed responses to industry and government. We were able to look at
the proposed project footprint and its proximity to water bodies and streams; high elevation winter ranges for moose, caribou and other species of importance; traplines; parks, protected areas and ecologically sensitive habitat; traditional land use; species at risk data; adjacent industrial land use allowing us to get a better idea of the impacts.
Economic Development has utilized GIS in land selection for potential future developments.
The AGA Planning Committee has used GIS to communicate the location of events and camping areas.
GIS has been implemented in most departments but we are continuing to develop the program to its true potential and capacity for McLeod Lake Indian Band.

Dana’che’a, my name is Christina Forshaw. I’m a student from the Aboriginal Early Childhood Education program working with the MacLeod Lake Daycare to complete my final
practicum to become a certified ECE. Since starting my practicum at the daycare I have been offered a full-time position, and am very excited to work with the band and the
other educators. I look forward to getting to know the children better and seeing what makes them special, meeting their families, and trying to be a support to the daycare.
I was born and raised in Mackenzie, BC, and have always had an interest in working with children. I have a five year old daughter named Melanie, and have spent my past two years working with
Mackenzie Counselling Services to support children with developmental delays as a Supported Child Development worker. I hope to learn more in the future about working with children who are diversely
abled, or in need of educators with specialized training.
I want to thank you all for the opportunity to meet you all and want to invite you to visit us at the center.
