THE WANTED – CHASING THE SUN
By Beth Oliver
GOODWIN’S THEORY
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.
There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual
reflects that of the music.
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and
the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens with screens, mirrors, stages, etc)
and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
There are often intertextual refernece (to film, tv programmes, other music videos etc).
LYRICS
"Chasing The Sun"
I'm better, So much better now, I see the light, touch the light, We're together now.
I'm better, So much better now, Look to the skies, give me life, We're together now.
We've only just begun, Hypnotized by drums, Until forever comes, You'll find us chasing the sun.
They said this day wouldn't come, We refused to run, We've only just begun
You'll find us chasing the sun.
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You'll find us chasing the sun
When the daylight's fading, We're gonna play in the dark, 'Til it's golden again, And now it feels so amazing, Can't see it
coming, And we'll never grow old again,
You'll find us chasing the sun.
I'm never, I'm never down, Lying here, staring up, And you're looking down.
I'm never, I'm never down, Live forever, forever, With you around.
We've only just begun, Hypnotized by drums, Until forever comes, You'll find us chasing the sun
They said this day wouldn't come, We refused to run, We've only just begun, You'll find us chasing the sun
The sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, You'll find us chasing the sun.

The first link we see between the lyrics and the visuals, is on the lines; ‘I see the light, touch the
light, We're together now’. When the artist sings; ‘I see the light, touch the light’, the location
changes from a dark roof top, to where a male is next to a car under a bright lamp post. Then when the
artist sings; ‘We’re together now’ a girl suddenly appears in front of the male. This fits in with
Goodwin’s theory of the lyrics matching the visuals.

The line; ‘We’re together now’ is repeated again later on in the song and just like before it shows a
man and woman together, which fit in with the lyrics. Another line that fit in with the visuals is the line;
‘When the daylights fading, we’re gonna play in the dark till it’s golden again’. When the artist
sings those lines, the band is seen to be in a low lit club, dancing and having a good time. Which clearly
shows that the lyrics and visuals are connected in some way.

There is a clear link between the music and visuals in this music video. The link is, that when the
editing is quicker, the music is louder and faster. The editing matches the beat of the music.
The music also builds the tension for when
the guys are bitten towards the end of the
video.

The video is described as pop. This is shown through
the close ups on the band members, which pop videos
commonly do when it comes to attractive artists. You can
also tell it’s a pop video because it contains some form of
dancing (in a club). The use of beautiful women is also
common in a pop video.

The music video shows a significant amount of shots of the artists/group. This promotes the band
as well as show their importance. As there is no lead singer the camera shows close-ups of all the males
in the group, when they are performing, to show that they are equally as important as the next. The video
often shows long shots at a low angle of the whole group, which promotes them as a group.

There are no cameras or mirrors seen inn the video but the use of eye contact is very significant.
Whenever one of the artists are singing; they give the audience (through the camera) complete eye
contact. This makes the notion of looking very clear. This makes the audience feel more involved with
the video and grabs their attention.
Although that are not any shots of women dancing in very skimpy clothes, women are used
throughout the video. Five main attractive girls keep appearing throughout the video, but they are often
quite difficult to fully see, as the lighting used for the video is quite dark and dull.

Although there are no obvious intertextual references, there is one
main reference to the movie ‘Twilight’ and TV shows like ‘True
Blood’ or ‘Vampire Dairies’; which is the girls with fangs biting
members of the band.
