They Laughed When I told them I was going

to Take Yoga in Seattle

I am a guy, living in Seattle. I take yoga

classes. No, I am not starting a 12 step

self-help group. The truth is, yoga is a

hard, action packed sport. Who knew?

Not any of my friends who laughed

when I told them I was going to take a

yoga class at LAB5 Fitness. I guess guys in Seattle like those

tough sports.

I confess that I thought yoga was sort of an “easy sport” that

mostly women participated in. I was pretty fit and honestly didn’t

think it would challenge me. But I was looking for a little more

flexibility so I decided to give it a try. Maybe yoga in Seattle is

just tougher than anywhere else. But I don’t think so. Instead I

think yoga is an action packed, demanding sport that frankly

came as a pretty big surprise to me. I left each class feeling as

though I had received an excellent work-out and feeling calmer

and less stressed too.

I learned that yoga has lots of benefits, including:

• Increased Fitness. When I started to learn and master new

poses, I became more balanced, flexible and stronger. Yoga

supported me in other fitness routines by helping me avoid injury

and enjoy daily activities more.

• Less stress. When I started learning the precise movements, I

stopped thinking about my day, the stress of my job, and

everything I had on plate. I felt calmer and less stressed – not

just in class but throughout the week.

• Weight loss. I actually lost weight. Even though I wasn’t really

trying. I became more aware of what I was eating and less

inclined to eat because I was stressed or bored.

I began to notice I had a lot more endurance. My coordination

improved, I was stronger and had a higher level of fitness. That

helped me with every physical activity I did, including a few team

sports. My friends stopped laughing about taking yoga in Seattle

when they saw the benefits. And now they join me in saying “I

am a guy living in Seattle. I take yoga classes.”
