U OFM NEWS Eighteen Maine citizens, all

interested in natural foods either as producers. distributors or consumers, met Tuesday evening in the vestry of the s. Freeport Church and formed a new organization to be known as the Maine Organic Foods Association with the hope that the group will attract natural food advocates from throughout the state. Some of the aims ofthcg roup are to formulate set of standards for organic growers, to establish a certification program to hold conferences and conduct tours or organic farms, to exchange growing hints, and marketing tips.

The meeting, which followed an organic food supper, was called by Charles Gould and Mrs. Rita Ridgway, EJ~."tenslon Agents of the Cooperative Extension Service of Androscoggin-Segadahoc Counties. It grew out of an organic gardening field day at Thomas Point

Schools will close Thursday for the Christmas recess. They will resume classes January 3, 1972.

Recent vote.s taken by the Directors have been as follows: Awardlng of the oll bid toM. C. Horne & Sons,, Inc., arrange to purchase and lntall watchdog devices on all school buildings (these devices are a sentry light that goes on when a furnace is not functioning), to purchase a shaper and belt sander from John Hoskins.

At the last regular meeting held December 15, the Directors granted audience with attorneys ~aul Zendzian and Alex Humphy from the Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Inc •. , of Bangor. They requested of the Board that when a family is ellglble and receiving free or reduced hot lurich and there are se\eral in the family then the total family should receive hot 1unch even though some buildings don't have facilities.

The District's present problem is the fact that the main kitchen at P. V. H. S. will handle only 500 servings and that is whs.t it is presently providing, Including the satellite lunches. To prevent discrlmlnation from all pupils, it would be necessary to provide 750 .more lunches and a minimum of 200 if one more building was to be taken care of. Pupils pre~ently being served are: P. V. H. S., Special Education, LaGrange Primary, Atkinson Primary, and Brownville Village Primary. Milo pupils walk or are bussed if they so choose. At this time there is no solution to help a famlly who }].as an eligible oupU at the high school receiving free lunch- and another child at the Middle school where the program doesn't isist without capital expeni diture of some kind. The Directors tabled ·any action until further information Is available.

The Directors' Negotiations Team consistlng of Mrs. Paul Bradeen, Miss Rachel Prescott, Mr. Richard Russell, Mr. Wllliam Tynan, and Supt. Richard SaWyer have been meeting Sundayeveningswith the M.S. A. D. No. 41 Educators' Association Team which consists of Mr. Virgil Valente, Mr. Louis Stevens, Miss Judy Hall, and Mr. Philip Gerow.

The Reading Department has been preparing a tape showing various sequences in the reading process and its teaching techniques. The children have been very responsive and the equipment Is beginning to develop into a fine teaching tool wlth many possibllltles. The equipment was purchased- with state construction aid and cost the District approximately fifteen hundred dollars. The total cost with state aid was a budgeted $3,023, Several P. V. H. s. students have been trained as crews to operate the equipment and this has provided great motivation and a learning experience In the field of electronics.

The Directors of M.s. A. D. No. 41 and Union 85 held their annual meeting this month and extended the superintendent's contract another year• . . ·

The directors are providing maintena:nce service . for the Lion's Pee Wee basketball league held Saturday mornings at P. V. H. s. There are some 60 5th and 6th grade boys from all over the district participating.

The Lions held their annual Christmas dinner at P . V. H. s. cafeteria and approximately 200 pupils attended.

M.s. A. D. No. 41 wishes to extend a very happy holiday season to all families and their loved ones .
