schools have worked together and performed musicals andartistic productions over several years.

Additionally, Ms. Frese organizes the “Hearts and Souls”student publication, an annual end-of-the year collection ofpoetry, essays, artwork, and music lyrics published by hernewspaper media class. “The Gladiator Times” is the current,student-led, newspaper at Gilbert. Ms. Frese is also an authorand published her own book, “Oh Chaplain, My Chaplain”, abiography of a WW II Navy chaplain, in 2005.

Ms. Frese has created programs for inside and outside theschool day, as motivation tools to keep at-risk teenagers inschool. She is a board member of “CUT Studios,” whichstands for “Children’s Unlimited Talent.” This positive, motivational, after-school activity provides musically talentedteens with the opportunity to receive private tutoring byprofessionals, if they attend and do well in school. Theoutcome is a free recording session of their singing, instrumental, or song-writing talents. She also teaches anAPEX class. APEX is an online, computer-based,credit-recovery program covering all graduation requirementcourses.

It is through her positive programs and influence that theseat-risk students find success that would not have beenpossible without her tireless efforts. She provides hope forthose seeking success and a high school diploma.

Juanis Garcia began hercareer in the District atOrangeview Junior HighSchool and now teaches

English language arts atWestern High School. She is

dedicated to the success of all students, even those not inher classes. She has taken on some of the most difficultstudents and is relentless in making sure that those studentsrise to the standards that are expected of them. Onecolleague wrote, “This teacher believes that the fairest thingto do for these kids is to hold them to high standards and tonag them until they quit seeing failure as one of theiroptions.” She often calls the homes of those students and“checks in” with them on a regular basis. She works closelywith administration to follow up with interventions. She is amember of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and SupportsCommittee, and is actively involved in the GEAR-UPorganization to help students become first-generation collegestudents.

Often, Ms. Garcia asks her students to take the time tointroduce themselves to the principal and other key

individuals on campus, to raise awareness of the resources andpeople available to help them become successful. She recentlyinvited Principal Daniel Lunt to her 9th grade interventionclasses to talk about their options if they have failed a coursetheir first semester.

Parents of students in her classes often express their gratitude, for the time she takes to contact them and for the help shegives them when completing assignments and re-teaching keyconcepts.

Over the past year, Ms. Garcia worked with another teacher toorganize an event designed to bring industry and highereducation representatives to 9th grade students to talk aboutcareer and education opportunities in Science, Technology,Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics at Western’s First AnnualSTEAM Conference. Students were excited about thepresentations and were exposed to career and educationpossibilities that they might not have otherwise known. Sheand her colleagues worked collaboratively with GEAR-UP andCal State Fullerton to make this event a success.

Students and her colleagues know that she is “tough” when itcomes to expectations but that she also cares. She maintains apositive attitude even though she is often found working wellinto the evening hours contacting parents, meeting withstudents, or adjusting lessons to help students succeed. Shehas also been the girls’ varsity soccer coach and helped tomotivate these students to do their very best. It’s only recentlythat has she given up coaching sports to dedicate more time toher students and her intervention efforts.

Additionally, she has worked with Western’s psychology teacherto organize a mentor program in which current juniors arebeing trained to become mentors in their senior year tounderclassmen.

Page 4: They're our Teachers of the Year

As a colleague commented, “I have seldom seen as dedicatedand hard-working a teacher as Juanis.”

As a member of the site Leadership Team, she has the uniqueability to work with teachers from all subject areas and herpositive attitude has made it possible for many to see what canbe done for students.

Students, parents, and colleagues alike recommend Ms. Garciaas not only a candidate for AUHSD Teacher of the Year, but forEducator/Mentor/Role Model of the Year!

Alicia Lopez teaches math atSycamore Junior High School. She is an exemplary teacherbecause she believes that allstudents can learn at high levels

and she commits herself tomaking that happen. She has

worked with all levels of students and has guided them tosuccess. She has worked with sheltered students with limitedEnglish and academic backgrounds to help them progress. Her

instructional skill, along with her evident caring for students, leaves a lasting impression. Students continue to seek her outyears after to thank her for everything she has done for them.

Recently, she took on a whole new challenge in the classroomby working in the Dual Language Academy. She has taughtmathematics in Spanish for the past three years. Thisendeavor required her to plan instruction in a much differentway. She had to develop mathematical skills as well aslanguage proficiency in her students. All of the instructionalmaterials had to be translated into Spanish. She continues torise to the occasion as the District implements Common Corestandards. Ms. Lopez has taken on this dramatic shift withzeal, working to shift her curriculum once again. She isconstantly challenging her students and working withcolleagues to determine the best way to incorporate the newstandards.

Ms. Lopez has an impact outside of the classroom as well. Shehas been an integral part of numerous after school programs. She is the engine behind Sycamore’s Academics First Program. This program allows students and teachers to addressassignments missed by students so they can continue to besuccessful in the program. She has also had a hand inorganizing school-wide, re-teaching after school, which iscalled Power Hour.

Sycamore Junior High School prides itself on being a parentfriendly school and Ms. Lopez contributes to this by organizingparent meetings and facilitating training for parents. She isconstantly in contact with the parents and families of herstudents. She meets with and talks to parents whose childrenare in after school programs, and works closely with other staffto increase parent involvement.

Her impact on Sycamore is significant, but she has broadenedher involvement by being selected as a teacher fellow for theTransforming Academic and Cultural Identidad ThroughBiliteracy grant. This research grant, in partnership with CalState Fullerton and Discovery Science Center, will developbilingual curriculum and a parent involvement model forSycamore, as well as the Anaheim Union High School District.

Ms. Lopez epitomizes the caring, skill, and dedication thatmake teaching a noble profession.

Lisa Newman has spent herentire 16-year career in theAnaheim Union High School

District, teaching humananatomy.

Ms. Newman selflessly serves studentsand staff without needing or wantingrecognition. And while she is truly agreat teacher, what sets Ms. Newmanapart is her vast involvement in the lifeof her campus and the greatercommunity. For example, as coordinatorof the Positive Behavioral Interventionsand Supports (PBIS) program, Ms.Newman is responsible for writing the“RROCKS” lessons, and is the “RROCKS”ambassador. RROCKS is Anaheim High

School’s character program; the acronym stands for Respect,Responsibility, Optimism, Community-minded, Kind, and Safe.Ms. Newman writes the character lessons, which are taughtevery month and help students reflect on their behavior andfocus on a different trait each month. She is always finding

ways to encourage students and staff to embody the charactertraits.

In addition to her PBIS involvement, Ms. Newman has servedfor a number of years on the Professional Learning Committee,Discipline Committee, School Site Council, EmergencyPreparedness Committee, and Superintendent’s AdvisoryCouncil. She served as a focus group leader for assessmentand accountability and as a member of the writing team duringthe school’s accreditation process. Sheadvised the Tobacco Use Prevention Education program, plusthe following campus organizations: International Club, LBKdance group, TKO dance group, Colonists to the Rescue,National Honor Society, Key Club, and Sophomore Class Club.

And, as if that isn’t enough, Ms. Newman pours her energyinto community service projects, including Wish Upon a Starand Baskets of Love, which are holiday donation programsgeared toward providing clothing, toys, and school supplies tohomeless children at HIS House and the Anaheim InterfaithShelter. She organizes Haircuts for the Holidays, a donationprogram for those who have lost their hair to illness, and for12 years was involved with Paint Your Heart Out Anaheim, whose volunteers refurbish the homes of low tomoderate-income seniors and disabled homeowners.

She gives so much to the Colony and has received littlerecognition for her dedication. Her heart is always in the rightplace trying to make Anaheim High School better for students, staff, and the community.

Without a doubt, Annette McCallis an outstanding music teacher.Like any great teacher, she also

serves as a role model to herpeers, taking on leadership duties

as part of Ball Junior High School’s leadership team andprofessional developmentteam.

Anyone who has thepleasure of knowing Ms.McCall can attest to thefact that her compassionand commitment towardstudents, parents, andstaff has enabled her tosustain a fantastic choirprogram. Theperformances and

productions she puts on are second to none! In fact, the qualityof her student performances can often be compared to those atthe high school level.

There is no doubt that Ms. McCall holds every student to highexpectations. As a result of her uplifting personality and hercommitment to her students, the choir program is thriving. Evenwith the fiscal challenges over the past several years and adecline in enrollment at Ball, the choir program has never beenstronger.

Walking into her classroom, it is wonderful to see so manystudents actively participating and enjoying themselves. Sheprovides a quality experience for students and the greater BallJunior High School community on a daily basis.

Numerous traits and qualities come to mind when thinking of apotential candidate for Teacher of the Year--professionalism, dedication, inspiration, compassion, and school involvement arejust a few. Without hesitation, it is safe to say that Ms. McCallfits the bill of Teacher of the Year!

Now teaching foundationalmath, Marcus Weiss has beenteaching at all levels ofmathematics at Brookhurst

Junior High School for over 12years. He served as department

head for many years and is a constant support for hiscolleagues. He supports his fellow math teachers by helping withtesting schedules, emergency substitute plans, computer labresponsibilities, and with a ready ear when times are frustrating. He is a great listener.

Mr. Weiss also supports fellow staff members byvolunteering for duties, supporting their events, being quick to cover a class if needed, and ingeneral having a positive attitude.

Above all, Mr. Weiss is a great teacher! He willexplain a problem or concept many times overuntil a student understands it. He will usedifferent techniques for explaining how to solvean equation, which in math is very beneficial! Hewill help any student, whether they are in his

class or not. He has run the homework lab for many years, always volunteering to help. He shows his students that schoolis about fun, as well as learning, by volunteering to do activities. He is the first one in line to organize a lunchtime event, helpdecorate for Red Ribbon Week, and dress up for spirit days, showing that it is OK to be silly. His students respect him, admire him, and most importantly, learn a lot from his teaching.

In the past, Mr.Weiss has been an ASB facilitator, achaperone/coordinator for East Coast trips, and a chaperone forlocal drama and sporting trips. He has been creative in comingup with fun math activities for Open House and Back to SchoolNight. He has helped with master scheduling and bell schedules.

For many, many years, Mr. Weiss also has volunteered to helpwith registration dates during summer. He is currently apentathlon coach, homework lab volunteer, and Lesson DesignSpecialist. He very rarely says no!

Mr. Weiss has a positive outlook on life and his job. He does nottake his responsibility as a teacher lightly; he pushes himself asa professional to make math interesting and easy to understand. The students admire him and so does the staff. BrookhurstJunior High School would be a different place without MarcusWeiss.

Erin Doherty runs the gamut inher teaching assignments, whichinclude special education, biology, and AP environmental

science classes. Her versatility isbut one of the many reasons she has

been a great teacher throughout her 15 years in the AUHSD.

In addition to her versatility, Ms. Doherty exhibits great moralcharacter reflecting her high professionalism and personalstandards, which help her to achieve her goals and continue todevelop her craft.

Ms. Doherty came to Cypress High School as a resourcespecialist-special education teacher, implementing differentiatedinstructional strategies that helped develop each of her student’sacademic and behavioral abilities. She incorporates updatedcomputer programs for students to use for their presentations(i.e. Prezi, PowerPoint, video, a cell analogy project, pigdissection). By providing various forms of research-basedlearning, Ms. Doherty shows she believes ALL her students canlearn when given effective teaching strategies and tools.

Because of hersuccess, shemoved to aposition of ageneral educationbiology teacherwhere she taughtboth generaleducation andcollaborative,special-education

inclusion classes. Her creativity and attention to detail created ahighly effective educational environment that brought bothacademic and personal success to each of her students.

Ms. Doherty challenges her students to help them think outsidethe box and more critically. For example, in her APenvironmental science class, she had students create"eco-columns" that simulated ecosystems using plastic bottles, sand, water plants, fish, snails, pond water, grass seeds, insects, decomposition materials like worms, and habitat sticks withspiders, in an effort to learn about ecosystems in the real world.

Page 9: They're our Teachers of the Year

Students were required to make observations including pH,temperature, dissolved oxygen content of the aquatic chamber, turbidity, plant growth, decomposition rate, and fish status. This was an extremely effective lab that not only benefited herAP class, but also her biology classes, regarding what ishappening throughout our ecosystem and what we can do topreserve these systems.

Ms. Doherty continues to work with community-learningprograms and has taken her students on various field trips tointegrate and support the standards being taught in theclassroom with real-life experiences. For instance, in her earthscience classes, she became involved in a grant sponsored bythe Ocean Institute in Dana Point, where the focus is onteaching students about global warming and the effects globalwarming is having on our environment and oceans. Theprogram focuses on how significant amounts of carbon affectthe earth and the oceans. Scientists from the institute firstcame to her classroom and reviewed global warming effectswith students. They performed various labs with the studentsso they could be prepared for their community experience.Students then went on a daylong field trip where theycompleted various hands-on labs on land and sea. Many of herstudents had never been beyond where they live, nor had theyever experienced being on a boat and seeing the various sealife in their original habitats. The students evaluated theexcursion as outstanding.

Additionally, Ms. Doherty continues to seek out new andinnovative ways to incorporate community resources into herclassroom instruction. For example, she worked with the BolsaChica Ecological Reserve to design curriculum for her studentswhen she took them there on field trips.

Ms. Doherty is also known for being an effective peer leader. As the "thinking maps trainer,” she has effortlessly trained alarge number of teachers on how to incorporate thosestrategies into their curriculum and instruction. Teachers whoattended the trainings said her presentation was aboveaverage and that it was a beneficial strategy that they woulduse in their instruction. She is helping to develop the campusorganic garden, which will be an educational, project-basedexploratory program focusing on research and activities thataddress the needs of special education, biology, environmentalscience, culinary, floral arranging, and adaptive PE students.Additionally, she serves on the technology committee, and isworking with a team to develop Common Core practices to beimplemented in the classroom.

The examples described above are only a few of the manydifferent research-based instructional strategies, lessons, andactivities Ms. Doherty implements on a daily basis to ensurethat ALL her students are getting the BEST possible educationfrom her.

Page 10: They're our Teachers of the Year

As you can see, Erin Doherty is an exemplary educator whoinspires students and colleagues to go beyond standardexpectations, and because of that she is a wonderful asset toCypress High School and the Anaheim Union High SchoolDistrict.

Dee Dee Mann has beenmaking science come alive inher classroom for the past 18years. She teaches in a creative

fashion so that her studentsunderstand the concepts.

Additionally, she is available at lunchand after school for students who needextra help.

Dale Junior High School students speakfondly of Ms. Mann and how much theyenjoy being in her class. Theyappreciate her unwavering dedicationto finding the best in her students, whatever their level of achievement.

Ms. Mann works tirelessly with acreative force that is admirable. Sheassesses her lessons from year-to-yearto understand where she can makeimprovements, and then adds to thelessons to create something new. Shedefinitely LOVES teaching science andshe shares that love with her studentsso they love science, too!

Ryan Loch is a key member ofHope School’s leadership team, and his vision and innovationhave been instrumental in

successfully implementing keyDistrict initiatives.

For example, Mr. Loch is co-chairing a Professional LearningCommunity (PLC) that has become a model for all PLCs atHope School and in the moderate-severe disability programs atthe comprehensive sites.

The PLC developed a system for identifying essentialknowledge and skills for student learning called “goal maps.”This is critical for curriculum and instruction at Hope School

Page 10 anaheim Union high School DiStrict • a rePort to oUr commUnity

Page 11: They're our Teachers of the Year

since there is no state approved curriculum formoderate-severe disability students. From the goal maps, Mr.Loch developed “units of studies,” which included all essentialcomponents of lesson design (content objectives, languageobjectives, formative assessment, common assessments, instructional adjustments, and a system for re-teaching).The units of study are driving cutting-edge curriculum andinstruction.

Mr. Loch has successfully taken key District initiatives, embraced them, and applied them to teaching studentswith moderate-severe disabilities. He has met this challengewith creativity, innovation, vision, and leadership. Many wouldagree that teaching students with moderate-severe disabilitiesis the most difficult teaching task of all.

In addition to leading the way in developing curriculum andinstruction in the classroom, Mr. Loch has gone above andbeyond by embedding 21st century learning and technology. He has effectively used technology in the classroom tofacilitate communication with minimally communicativestudents. The District’s chief technology officer, ErikGreenwood, has said on a number of occasions that HopeSchool is leading the way with using technology in theclassroom. The implementation of technology in theclassroom is directly related to Mr. Loch’s innovation andleadership.

Lastly, Mr. Loch has been a key contributor regardingprofessional development for other teachers and instructionalassistants at Hope School and for moderate-severe disabledstudents at comprehensive sites. He is leading other teachersin developing curriculum and lesson plans, and is a model forimplementing lesson design initiatives. He also is in theprocess of developing a collaboration system for allmoderate-severe teachers using Google Apps. The system willallow all teachers to collaborate on developing lessons, sharing lessons, problem-solving methods, etc. He currently ispiloting the system with other teachers, and it isuser-friendly, efficient, and a model of effective collaboration.

Without hesitation, Hope School nominates Mr. Ryan Loch asTeacher of the Year.

Walking into Sean Pfeiffer’sclassroom immediatelyanswers the question of what

a teacher’s classroom shouldlook like. Visitors are struck by

the level of student engagement. Sitting in small groups, students are passionately discussing the text, as Mr. Pfeiffereffortlessly moves from group to group, monitoring discussionand sparking new areas for inquiry.

Improving literacy skills is the impetus behind his instruction, but for Mr. Pfeiffer, literacy does not merely meanunderstanding the theme of Hamlet. It means teachingstudents how to discern the purposes of all genres and allforms of media. He teaches students to read their world.Fostering critical thinking skills through inquiry-basedinstruction is at the heart of his teaching strategies.

Part of Mr. Pfeiffer’s success is due to his genuine care for hisstudents’ well being. To ensure their success, he meets withstudents before, during, after school, and on weekends. He isnot only dedicated to their academic success but alsointerested in developing their character. As part of his seniorEnglish class, students are required to complete a communityservice project. While this requirement may not seem unique, what is unique is that Mr. Pfeiffer participates in his students’activities, acting not just as a teacher but as a role model forthem. His commitment to his students’ character developmentis exemplary.

Mr. Pfeiffer is a department chair’s dream, always offering toteach any grade level. In addition to teaching all grade levels,he has taught English language development andspecial-education inclusion classes. This diverse background

has made him a well-rounded teacher, who is able toeffectively teach students at all levels of ability. He has beeninstrumental in fostering growth in the department, as he isthe one in meetings who is unafraid to question teachers’approaches and offer alternatives to enhance the quality ofinstruction for all students. He has been instrumental in manyof his colleagues’ professional growth.

Mr. Pfeiffer’s self-deprecating, engaging manner makes him aneffective teacher leader and a favorite of many, who feelfortunate to work with him.

Lexington Junior High Schoolis honored to present JeffCornelius as its 2013-2014Teacher of the Year. Mr.

Cornelius has been atremendous asset to the campus.

Not only does he motivate the students in his classes, heworks to keep the staff energized and connected as well. Hebelieves that school is more than a place to learn academicsubjects; hebelieves that it isabout personalrelationships andlearning to be amember of acommunity. Healso follows thisphilosophy in hispersonal life byvolunteering andworking for avariety ofcommunityagencies.

Mr. Cornelius graduated from Cal State Long Beach with adegree in health science and a minor in biology. He has beenteaching 7th grade science for 15 years and is the activitiesdirector for the Associated Student Body (ASB). As activitiesdirector, Mr. Cornelius organizes a group of students whosepurpose is to infuse the campus with school spirit. Heencourages ASB students to cover the campus with posters forsporting events, in addition to planning “dress-up days” andnoontime activities. Because of his amazing work as Lexington’s activities director,he received the prestigious 2013 Activities Director of the Yearaward at the California Association of Directors of ActivitiesConference.

Last year, Mr. Cornelius volunteered to teach a collaborationclass for the students in the autism focus special day class. Assuch, he works closely with the autism focus teacher to modifyassignments, make the material accessible to students withdisabilities, and include them as a part of the generaleducation class. He keeps high expectations for all of hisstudents and does not treat the special education students anydifferently. They are just a part of his class, and as such, theyare accepted as a part of the campus community. His class isalways fun and engaging for all of his students and hisenthusiasm makes them all want to keep coming back formore.

Mr. Cornelius has an abundance of energy. Not only does hework full time as a science teacher, he works evenings andweekends as a stage manager and entertainment director forthe Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Anaheim Ducks. This follows an 18-year career at Disneyland as a productionstage manager. While most people would think that these threepositions would cement him solidly in the community of OrangeCounty, he does even more with his spare time. Mr. Corneliuscoaches baseball in Fullerton and also is the vice president ofGolden Hill Little League. He sits on the Council for the Orangeand Riverside County California Association of Directors ofActivities Area Board.

At Lexington, he coaches tennis, volleyball, and football afterschool. Mr. Cornelius also volunteers with fundraising anddonation drives for the Assistance League of Anaheim, whichprovides shelter, food, and clothing for Anaheim’s women indespair. As if that is not enough, he always makes sure to helplocal families at Christmas by fundraising and purchasing gifts. He also portrays Santa Claus at a variety of functions where hebrings cheer to hundreds of children. He doesn’t reserve hisgood works for the Christmas season, however, as everyone oncampus knows that if they see a student in need, they can goto him and he will do his best to meet that need. Over theyears, he has found ways to provide shoes, clothing, supplies, and materials for the underprivileged and those who needassistance.

Mr. Cornelius makes Lexington Junior High School a better, more interesting, friendlier place to work. He often leads staffmeetings with team building activities. No one will ever forgetthe photo scavenger hunt around Cypress. This involved morethan 40 staff members and teachers traveling around thecommunity taking group pictures at random businesses. It wasthe best staff development day ever!

Jason Smith is constantlyreevaluating his lessons andstriving to make his teaching

more relevant, more engaging, and more empowering—he truly

strives to help his students become reasoned judgment makersand independent seekers of knowledge.

Jason’s content knowledge is second to none; as a result, hisstudents are in the best possible hands when it comes tolearning about U.S. history, and he consistently brings out thebest in them. This is true of all of his classes, and his abilityto reach and inspire lower performing students is remarkable.Through a combination of humor, compassion, and impressivepedagogy, Mr. Smith finds a way to inspire them all. None ofthis happens by accident, though, because he meticulouslyplans each of his lessons, matching them to his students’schema, interests, and backgrounds, and by adapting thelessons to ensure they align with Common Core and literacystandards. It is, therefore, not surprising that many Loara High

School students will tell you that Mr. Smith’s class was themost impactful and enjoyable of any course they took duringtheir four years of high school.

As a department chair, many of his colleagues look to Mr.Smith for guidance. He gives straight answers built on his bestjudgments and a sense of compassion. Although he is the headof his department, he does everything he can to let hiscolleagues know that they are his peers and equals. He is opento hearing new ideas and concepts and is willing to admit hisown weaknesses as a teacher. He participates in studentclubs and takes time to learn new pedagogy at conferencesduring the school year and over the summer break.

He is known as one of the strongest and most effectiveteachers on campus, one whom many teachers wish toemulate. Student and substitute teachers alike all know whohe is and want to learn from him. He has also participated as asupport provider for some of our own teachers, who continueto rave about the guidance he has provided them.

Furthermore, Mr. Smith has served many times as a masterteacher, and many of his student teachers have gone on tobecome successful teachers themselves. Ultimately, JasonSmith is dedicated to making his colleagues the best they canbe through his support and willingness to learn alongside eachof them. Whether it is through the application of the latesttechnology, incorporating television, music, and film into hislessons, or learning new methods for better impartingconcepts, he is open minded and eager to learn. Moreover, heis a fearless pioneer of cutting edge pedagogy. Hedemonstrates this time and again as he modifies lessons andhis curricula to test new approaches, and he gladly sharesthese approaches with his colleagues.
