TUG OF WAR

Critical Thinking Skills:

Reasoning, Reflecting, Seeing both sides

Students instructed to identify and frame two opposing sides of a dilemma, generate ideas that tug you to either end of the ‘rope’

Page 33: Thinking Routines with Texts

Thinking Routines with Texts

33

Identify the 2 opposing sides

Generate as many ‘tugs’ as possible or reasons that pull you toward each side

Determine the strength of each tug and place on tug-of-war rope placing strongest at the farthest ends and weaker tugs toward the middle

STEPS

Should we sell

‘Blue Poles’?

1. Identify two opposing sides

2. Generate tugs

3. Place strongest to the ends, weaker points in the middle

4. Capture the ‘what if’ questions?

Page 39: Thinking Routines with Texts

39

Can you think of any other texts or current news stories that would lend themselves to tug-of-war thinking routine?

Page 40: Thinking Routines with Texts

40

Critical Thinking Skills:

Reflecting from different perspectives & Empathising

Page 41: Thinking Routines with Texts

41
