The cen te r of our w o r k is about s ix miles south of Sylvatus on Rev. Denny Jenn ings fa rm. The work was begun here about t h i r t y years a g o by Bro. and Sr. Jenn ings and we do apprec ia te w h a t they have done here in th is a rea .

On t h e evening of September 5, a l a rge group of fr iends and neighbors ga the red a t the Bethel church to welcome u s t o Virginia. I t was a rea l privilege to have Bishop Schoaltz with us on t h a t occasion to br ing the message . Bishop Ginder was in cha rge of the service.

We had no t ime for homesickness or loneliness for we immedia te ly began to work on the new church, which was well unde r w a y , a n d also to vis i t t h e people of the community .

We real ly enjoy work ing wi th t he Virginia people. You need only to ge t a m o n g them a shor t while to real ize the i r unusua l fr iendliness. There is a w a r m t h of friendship among the people here t h a t one cannot help bu t loving them and feeling r i g h t a t home. We are very gra te fu l for t he i r in te res t in the work a t Bethel .

We give an express ion of t hanks to all who have shared in providing furn i tu re and other supplies for t he mission home. Were it not for the generos i ty of o thers , our be-g in ing here would have been much more difficult. The following ar t icles were given by different groups and individuals : Bedroom suite, Young Marr ied People 's class, New Guilford congrega t ion ; Ma t t r e s s , Young People 's class, New Guilford congrega t ion ; Spr ings , Mr. and Mrs . I lunlock Creek Mission, Hunlock Creek, P a We wish to honor the Lord for His good

ness toward us dur ing the pas t quar te r . Our Daily Vacat ion Bible School opened Ju ly 7, and continued th rough J u l y 18. This was a new ven ture for this community , and consequently our enrol lment was only for ty-six. The in te res t was good, however, and we hope to have a l a r g e r school n e x t year .

A couple car loads of our local people were privi leged to a t t end Roxbury Camp-meet ing for a t leas t a p a r t of the t ime this year .

On Sa tu rday afternoon, September 6, our l i t t le church was t he scene of a wedding, when Cori tha Lamoreaux , one of our Sunday School gir ls , was marr ied . She h a d also served on our Young Peoples P r o g r a m Commit tee .

Our Fal l Love F e a s t was held Sa tu rday evening, September 13. Those a t t end ing o ther t h a n our local people w e r e : Bishop and Sr. H e n r y A. Ginder (our new Oversee r ) , Sr. Gladys Lehman, Eld. and Sr. Paul Goodling, E ld . Eli Hos te t le r Jr . , Bro. and Sr. Samuel Engle , Bro. and Sr. Enlow Campbell , and Bro. Walker ' s mother , b ro ther and sis ter . W e were pleased to have these folks s t ay over for our Bible Conference t he nex t day. Two special f ea tu res of th i s day were a n ordinat ion service and a service in which two baby boys were publicly dedicated to t he Lord. The rich messages b rough t to us by Bishop Ginder and our evangel is t were an inspirat ion and a blessing to all who a t tended. Our revival continued t h r o u g h the next two weeks. Bro. Hos te t l e r was used of God in b r ing ing Spir i t -directed messages . The response on the p a r t of t he unsaved w a s not as encourag ing as we hoped i t would be, bu t we t r u s t t h a t the Seed sown will b r ing fo r th f rui t in t he days to come.

Mar ion and Alice Walker

Nor th S t a r Mission, Meath Pa rk , Sask. Tru ly God h ea r s and answers p raye r . Our evangelis t , E a r l Sider, wi th his wife

and daughte r , A n n a Ruth , ar r ived a t Nor th S t a r Mission on the n igh t of J u l y 28 on muddy roads t h a t seemed very bad to them. But wi th a n igh t ' s res t , Bro ther S ide r was ready to tackle the roads a g a i n and t ake a group of teachers to Paddockwood to begin a ten-day Dai ly Vacat ion Bible School. The school was held in the evangelis t ic t en t wi th one class mee t ing outside on nice days or in a l i t t le t e n t in r a iny wea ther . Good in te res t w a s shown with a to ta l enrol lment of 53. The teachers were Sis ters E a r l Sider and Heise, Mrs. MacCalmon, Mrs . F . Johnson, and Mrs . Dear ing .

Our revival mee t ing was held in t h e t e n t on the outsk i r t s of Paddockwood th is yea r instead of a t the Nor th S t a r Mission church, and from the goodness of t h e h e a r t s of our pas to r and Bro ther Sider we a long the w a y were ga the red into the i r cars and were able to a t tend mos t of the meet ings .

Bro ther Sider gave such s t i r r ing , t r u t h ful messages which God had laid on his h e a r t t h a t we were all revived and d rawn closer to our Lord Jesus . The Holy Spir i t was fai thful each n igh t to s t i r the hea r t s of each one p resen t and to b r ing conviction to h e a r t s unsaved. Twenty-five answered the call t o accept Je sus as the i r own personal Saviour. One g r andmothe r knel t a t the a l t a r and yielded he r h e a r t to God. We a re so glad t h a t we can come to Him a t any age and He will h e a r our cry. Most of the converts were young people and children. F o u r were from one family.

Bro ther and Sis ter Garman from Kindersley were able t o be wi th us for one meet ing . Others were Bro. N. Climenhaga,

Bro. Baker , Bro. P lum of Kindersley, John Hoover from Delisle, and the Phil l ips, r e tu rned missionar ies to China. These were helping wi th the work of laying a new foundation for the church. Muriel Zoerb and E lmer and Peal Zoerb, Delisle were also wi th us one evening. S is te r Ru th Linklet ter of Delisle helped with the cooking a t the mission while the group w a s working a t the church. Sis ter Logan helped a t the mission th roughou t the two weeks of Bible School and meet ings .

Following the meet ing a t Paddockwood, and the Daily Vacat ion Bible School the re , Mrs . Logan, Mrs . MacCalmon and Verna Heise wen t to Candle Lake for a five-day D.V.B.S. Maurice Moore's th ree oldest g i r l s also wen t a long to a t t end classes. There was one who sought t he Lord in th i s Bible School.

God m e t wi th us in a grac ious way. P ra i se His Holy N a m e !

Greet ings in J e s u s ' name. There is g r e a t rejoicing in heaven be

cause souls a re being born into the family of God. The p a s t q u a r t e r h a s seen m a n y souls kneel a t the a l t a r of p raye r . Most of these have shown an intel l igent in te res t in t he way of salvat ion and a victorious life. They affirmed the i r fa i th in the a toning work of Chr is t on the cross for them, and declared the i r purpose to p r a y and read His word and to obey the leading of the Holy Spiri t . Some r e tu rned to give evidence of the i r sinceri ty, o thers were t r ans i en t s and m a y r e t u r n in the months and yea r s to come. The seed h a s been sown in the i r hea r t s and God will give the increase. This is a g r e a t field and the opportuni t ies a r e unlimited.

One young man came in with a marvelous experience of escape th rough the i ron cur ta in and was then converted, c ame to America, and to San Francisco to find work. He was looking for 6th Ave. and was walk ing down 6th St. ins tead and found the Mission and came in and was gloriously blessed of the Lord. He had lost the joy of his experience but found i t aga in a t t he a l t a r . His tes t imonies were a real inspira t ion to all of us . He wan ted to s t a y wi th us , but his wife refused to come, so a f te r several days of p r a y e r he decided i t was his du ty to go back to Por t land, Oregon to be with her. His s tory would make a new chap te r to the book of Acts .

Another young m a n hea rd the s inging on the s t r ee t and came into the mission to find God and the new bir th . H e h a s been a r e g u l a r a t t e n d a n t since.

Bishop Samuel Wolgemuth and family spent a few days wi th us while m a k i n g final p repara t ions for sail ing to J a p a n . Thei r presence^ and fellowship in the Home and the Mission were a real encouragement and inspira t ion to us all. I t was a thr i l l ing experience to s t and on p ie r and see t hem se t sail for J a p a n . We had a very precious service wi th them in the i r cabin jus t before the ship left the pier. I t was touching to see the children lined up a t the rai l s inging as the space widened between the p ier and the ship.

We arr ived here on the 5th of A u g u s t to t ake charge of the work again , a f ter an absence of four years . The welcome accorded us was encouraging and h e a r t wa rming . W e found some changes , bu t only w h a t could be na tu ra l ly expected.

Sr. Evelyn F r y s i n g e r is back aga in wi th the Mission family and is filling a l a rge place in the work.

Saxton Mission, Saxton, Pa. Greet ings in t he precious name of Jesus

from the mission a t Saxton, nest led among the mounta ins and hills of t he soft coal mining a r ea of Pennsylvania . We a re h a p py in t he knowledge of the Lord ' s blessing upon the work here , of his convicting of s inners , of victoi-ies being won, and of tes t i monies of heal ing a m o n g His children.

At the beginning of the q u a r t e r Bro ther Andrew Slagenwei t assumed pas to ra l re- , sponsibil i ty of t h e Sax ton congregat ion and the Lord is blessing his consecrated minist r y among us . On A u g u s t 10 Sr. Florence F a u s left for a brief t ime a t home and then to h e r new a s s ignmen t in Nor th Wes t Canada a f te r two yea r s of faithful service here . Our p r aye r s follow her across the miles. The same day the new worke r s from Canada arr ived. We have been especially conscious of t he Lord ' s guidance and help dur ing the ear ly weeks of our service here . We've been encouraged and challenged as we've hea rd and seen the marve ls of God's grace among the people here bu t our h e a r t s yea rn for those we've a l ready contacted who a re so needy and yet seem so unconcerned about the i r spi r i tual pover ty .

I t has been g ra t i fy ing to note a r a t h e r s teady increase in S . S. a t tendance dur ing the month of September and also to see some new faces in our o ther services. We rejoice especially for t imes of blessing and ref reshing in our r e g u l a r services. On different occasions we've apprecia ted the min is t ry of Bro. Alber t Engle , our overseer, and Bre th ren Roy Asper and Hayden Walls .

The usual schedule of services has been main ta ined : Lord 's Day worship preceded by Sunday School, S u n d a y evening preaching service, and two p raye r services each week. This t o g e t h e r wi th t he var ied act i vit ies t h a t go to make up city mission work such as vis i t ing, p ray ing and the occasional unusual incident has been keeping us busy.

Visi tors for t he q u a r t e r included Bro ther and Sis ter Har t sock from Det ro i t who spent a week end here . The i r vis i t and fellowship was an inspi ra t ion to all . Sr. Davidson's pa r en t s were wi th us over September 7. Thei r open-hear ted fellowship and bountiful g iv ing were deeply a p preciated.

Aff th is wr i t ing we a r e in our " F o r w a r d " Visi tat ion Campaign . W e are endeavor ing to visit a t least five hundred homes over th is effort. Our communi ty is predominately Roman Catholic. However, we find the folk courteous and genera l ly responsive. We feel t h a t some fruitful contacts have been made.

'Sr. Compton, miss ionary to the Leper work in India, was wi th us for a profitable service on Augus t 10. Bro. J a m e s Sider Of the Bert ie congregat ion was with us for p r a y e r service on A u g u s t 28.

Probably our ou t s tand ing feeling concerning the work here is the enormi ty of t he field. Countless thousands of souls a round us who do not know Jesus as the i r Saviour . Will you help us p r a y t h a t we m a y so preach and teach Jesus Chr is t t h a t m a n y m a y hea r and believe on J e s u s Chr is t to t he saving of the i r souls.

F a r r i s Mines, Virginia As we look toward the mounta in , wes t of

the pa rsonage , we can easily see fall is here . The multi-colored leaves tell us t h a t ano ther s u m m e r has passed and wi th it we have fond memories and evidences of God's workings in the activit ies of the p a s t qua r t e r .

In July , we secured permiss ion f rom the Police Dept. in t he town of Pulaski to hold s t r ee t meet ings on the cour t house lawn. A pe rmi t was also g r an t ed us to use a public address system, which is a g r e a t asset in th is t ype of work. Each Sa tu rday n igh t a t 7:00 o'clock we endeavored to br ing the simple Gospel to those who would ga the r . Our service consisted of g roup singing, p rayer , special s inging, tes t imonies and the spoken Word. I t was a common scene to see 150 people, s t and ing or s i t t ing l is tening to the Gospel. Many came to us w i t h heavy conviction and t e a r s in the i r eyes, ask ing for help. I t was in te res t ing to observe t h a t mos t of those who asked for help were people who once knew w h a t i t was to be saved and had wandered away from the i r Savior. Sunday School p a p e r s wi th a t r ac t inside were handed ou t in l a rge quani t ies . I t was not unusual for people to ask for a copy of the paper . They remarked , "The stor ies a re so good."

There was a handful of Chris t ian people from o ther churches who would come regula r ly t o t he mee t ings and give us t he i r support . T h e r e were also unsaved men and women who missed very few n igh ts . God has promised His Word would not r e t u r n void.

Bible schools a re over for another summer. We held two this year , one here a t F a r r i s Mines and the o ther a t Rich Hill in t he Colored Church. The a t tendance and in te res t was very good here a t our Mission. I t was indeed a bless ing to see children come to Bible school who do not go to Sunday School anywhere . Our two weeks were cl imaxed wi th a p r o g r a m on F r i d a y night . The p a r e n t s tu rned out ve ry well and the children were eage r to fulfill the i r p a r t in the p r o g r a m .

The Bible School a t Rich Hill was not a t . tended as r egu la r ly as we had hoped. However, we were g lad for those who came when they could. I t was very in te res t ing to see the g r a n d m a s and g randpas come and sit wi th t h e young people's class. Thei r nod, and "Yes , S i r " to the t r u t h was quite unique.

On Sept. 21 , Bro. and S r . John Mar t in from El izabeth town, Penna . came to ass i s t u s in a revival mee t ing . The church and communi ty responded unusual ly well to these services. The church was near ly full every n igh t bu t one. God gave us a revival among the believers. Some wonderful victor ies were won around the a l t a r in the Sunday morn ing service and also in the Sunday af ternoon p r a y e r meet ing . W e thank God for the fa i thfulness of the Holy Spiri t in helping believers search ou t the i r hea r t s . Test imonies of glorious vic tory were h e a r d t h roughou t the mee t ing and souls a r e being led on. P ra i s e His n a m e !

Tuesday and F r i d a y w a s Children's night . Children f rom other communit ies and churches came to h e a r Sr. Mar t in give t he Word by f lannelgraph. They filled the first t h r e e or four benches and took a n act ive p a r t in t h e revival service, especially in group s inging.

The beginning of school br ings to u s the oppor tuni ty of mak ing contacts in the public schools. We were a b i t slow in ge t t i ng around the first t ime, because of t he extensive church building p r o g r a m a t Bethel . Request w a s made t h a t we come as we did t he previous school t e r m . W h a t a pr ivi lege i t was to s tand before these eage r children and tell t hem of Jesus . Bro. and Sr .Mar t in assis ted us and these contacts were helpful in d rawing the children and older folks to our revival . Approximate ly 280 children a re given the Gospel each month t h r o u g h these contacts .

W e a re indeed very sor ry to have to show a deficit in our financial r epor t for th is Quar te r . Our ga rden gave us l i t t le produce because of the dry w e a t h e r and we found i t necessary to purchase vegetables to can. We know God will help us to come 'out on top aga in and continue to opera te free of debt. P r a y for us and the work here .

people who had never known the Lord before. Dur ing the t e n t meet ing , conducted by Bishop Gilmore for two weeks on the lawn of Bro. Bennie Millard a t Houghton Center , an elderly lady came to t h e a l t a r a f ter manifes t ing a need for several p re vious services. She was one of t h e twenty-t w o seekers for soul help whi le a number were anointed for physical hea l ing . T h e a t tendance and in t e re s t we re good wi th qui te a few unsaved people presen t . Since the revival , a man, 67 yea r s old for whom we have long prayed , has been saved a t the mission home, having come for t h a t purpose. His wife is a Chris t ian and he had shown increasnig conviction for months . But he is an example of the migh ty gr ip Sa tan has on those he has ruled all t he i r lives. Thank God t h a t del iverance came th rough the blood of Chr is t ! God is helping him to break life long hab i t s . Yet a babe in Chris t , he needs our p r a y e r s .

A co t tage p r a y e r mee t ing in the Wals ing-h a m a rea w a s t he scene of ano ther new bi r th when the f a the r of four fine children wept his way to God wi th h i s a r m around his Chr is t ian wife. W e believe he fully counted the cost and is the t ype t h a t can be expected to go all the way. He has been tes t i fy ing a t each oppor tuni ty .

We conducted s ix-day Bible Schools as usual a t F r o g m o r e and Hough ton Center w i th good in te res t and a t tendance . The children and the p a r e n t s wished they migh t continue longer and we wished i t we re possible to have i t so. Our t each ing staff w a s small bu t w a s very capably augmented by the help of Sr. E d w a r d Gilmore. Several children in each School sought t he Lord on Decision Day. Most of these were from non-Bre thren- in-Chr is t homes .

The communi ty was shocked and saddened by the t r ag ic dea th of l i t t le Michael Millard, two-year-old son of Bro. and Sr. Bennie Millard. He was accidently r u n over by a t r a c t o r in t h e y a rd a t h i s home. While mourn ing deeply, the p a r e n t s showed a Chr is t ian for t i tude and res igna t ion al toge the r foreign to unsaved people. Thei r Chr is t ian lives are a tes t imony among the i r m a n y unsaved neighbors and fr iends from among whom they themselves have been saved only a few years .

Af te r a long period of opera t ing the mis sion wi th less t h a n .a full staff, Sr. Es the r Kanode 's a r r iva l about mid-September w a s a hea r t en ing event. Al ready she has as sumed many responsibil i t ies will ingly and capably.

A t t he p resen t t ime the Mission home is undergo ing some needed exter ior improvements . A p ic ture window will grace t he f ront while several new windows will r e place badly ro t t ed ones. Insul-brick on the outside is expected to add to the w a r m t h as well as much to the appearance . All of th is will entai l a min imum of expense because of some donat ions of labor and mater ia l s .

We feel encouraged to endeavor to win more souls and to help the Chr is t ians on the U p w a r d Way . P r a y for the new conv e r t s and t h a t all of u s m a y be kep t under the Spir i t ' s anoin t ing so t h a t God may cont inue to work. Visit our Mission a t your convenience.

Messiah Lighthouse Chapel, Ha r r i sbu rg , Pa . Once aga in i t was our privi lege to con

duct gospel services every Sunday af ter noon on t h e Capitol P a r k grounds , as in fo rmer seasons. Test imonies , messages , songs carr ied well over the P A sys tem. Thousands of t r a c t s were dis t r ibuted. The meet ings were apprec ia ted ; somet imes hands were ra ised for p r aye r . E t e r n i t y alone will reveal t h e full resu l t s .

L a t e r i n t h e s u m m e r a n outdoor s t r ee t mee t ing was held on T h u r s d a y n igh t s in ano the r section of the ci ty. He re t he re were more traffic noises, bu t m a n y shoppers , s t rol lers , and persons who stopped to listen. There was g r e a t joy in our h e a r t s as w e gave out t h e glorious gospel of o u r l iving Lord by spoken word, songs, and wr i t t en t r ac t s . Two men came to t he Chapel one Sunday evening, and one m a n ask for p raye r , s t a t i ng t h a t he saw the w a y of salvat ion in a different l ight . W e p r a y the Lord to w a t e r t he seed of t he Word and t hank God for the promise t h a t His Word will not r e t u r n void.

Now t h a t the Fa l l season has a r r ived our schedule of indoor meet ings has increased. Young People 's meet ings have been s t a r t ed wi th fresh in te res t , and some Children 's meet ings , in addit ion to the r egu la r preaching services. Several weeks ago four souls, s t r a n g e r s t o our congregat ion, sought t he Lord for salvat ion in a Sunday n igh t ' s meet ing . Living in an envi ronment of m a n y t empta t ions , t hey need our p raye r s .

Week-Day Bible School w a s s t a r t ed t h e first week in October. Our l i t t le Chapel is crowded aga in on Thu r sdays wi th children. At tendance now averages about 100. A fine staff of t eachers work wi th these active boys and gir ls in the i r respect ive classes. We p r a y God to give us these youth to be definitely saved. These city youth need to be t a u g h t the Bible plainly, and to be warned aga ins t t he per i ls of sin t h a t surrounds them.

The basement changes sugges ted in our l a s t r epo r t g iving more room for our Sunday School were completed th i s summer . This involved the removing of a pa r t i t ion

and the instal la t ion of modern-fold doors. Now we have two s imul taneous sessions of Sunday School, wi th t h e P r i m a r y Depar t ment convening downsta i rs . Gifts toward this project a r e acknowledged in t he financial section of this repor t . There remains a balance of $132.55 indebtedness on th is project. Suppor t to t h i s need will be appreciated.

The Messiah Ambassadors Class of the Gran tham Sunday School sponsored a long-needed electrical a l te ra t ion in the dining room of the Mission Home. The i r cooperat ion in th is was deeply apprecia ted.

The Mission building h a s needed pa in t very badly. This summer a pa in t ing project , sponsored by Rober t Carlson, our son now in college, met th is need. He was assisted by Loren Heise, Rober t Brubaker , Clarence Sakimura , Edwin Crone, Clyde Sollenberger and I r a Smee . Mr. Chester Crone loaned his equipment. Most of these men a re s tudents in college. Several of our own men contr ibuted and the Mission Staff members helped to complete the job. We do pra i se the Lord for th is answer to p raye r . And we do express apprecia t ion to all who shared in th is major mate r ia l need.

We do honor the Lord for His care of us and acknowledge the cooperat ion of the Lord 's people. The financial s t a t emen t will reveal t h a t some bills have accumulated which cause us to show a deficit. They represen t building needs, insurance, and ca r expenses. Help us p r a y about these needs. God is able and our purpose is to t r u s t Him. Our cons tant p r a y e r is t h a t souls m a y be saved and His kingdom increased th rough the min is t ry of Messiah Lighthouse Chapel. Thank you for your p r aye r s for us and for your suppor t .

Yours in Christ , Joel and F a i t h e Carlson El izabeth Kanode Beulah Lyons Grace Robb
