All summer long, construction crews have been hard at work inside Third Street’s historic home on East 11th Street. If you took a

summer workshop or lesson, visited our social media pages, or just wandered down the street, you no doubt have seen the changes as the Anna-Maria Kellen Auditorium was converted into a state-of-the-art Concert Hall. It is an exciting time to be part of the Third Street community! As executive director, a Third Street parent and proud Third Street student, I am so fortunate to work with such an extraordinary faculty, staff and board to advance this historic and dynamic institution.

There is so much happening at Third Street this year: We are introducing the new Anna-Maria Kellen Concert Hall, now equipped with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, and, of course, the signature Third Street red carpet. We are converting

a musty old boiler room into an elegant new Recital Hall, creating a second large performance space for music and dance. We will also unveil Third Street’s new recording studio, designed to prepare our students for the demands of 21st century music making.

We are sending Third Street teaching artists into a record number of schools and community centers – 25 partnerships and counting! – providing critical arts education programs to NYC schools. And we are delighted to greet new students, faculty and board members to the School, as well as welcoming back long-standing members of the Third Street family.

Third Street will present at least 250 performances this year and we hope you can join us! Highlights include our

LiveSOUNDS concert series (formerly named APS) featuring Third Street faculty and guest artists, and a Third Street showcase at Arts Brookfield’s magnificent Brookfield Place Winter Garden, as part of WNYC’s New Sounds Live Series. That performance will feature over 100 Third Street students and faculty members performing a world premiere by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. Finally, on Sunday, December 20, NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts will again host Third Street’s annual Holiday Concert, featuring exciting ensemble performances and all the holiday cheer you can handle!

And while we celebrate all that is new at Third Street, we can rejoice in our historic core strength – a fiercely committed and highly skilled faculty, staff and board; dedicated students and families; and a nurturing and supportive community. We remain united in our mission to help aspiring musicians and dancers to develop both as artists and individuals.

I am deeply honored to be working with you to build towards a vibrant and thriving decade at Third Street. Thank you for being part of the School’s rich tradition and exciting future.

Sincerely,Valerie G. LewisAnna-Maria Kellen Executive Director

THIRD STREET MUSIC SCHOOL SETTLEMENT L

ast year Third Street celebrated its 120th anniversary in a big way. The year kicked off with a series of summer birthday parties that

celebrated the school and its students with food, fun and temporary tattoos. A special performance featuring 120 pianists playing Pachelbel’s Canon in D rang throughout the halls in December, while at two Master Classes in the spring, students learned about the music of 1894, the year of Third Street’s founding, with experts Orli Shaham, Walter Frisch and Richard Goode.

Most exciting of all, 2014-15 marked the first ever Third Street Gala. Held on Monday, April 27 at the Lower East Side restaurant Capitale, the Third Street Gala honored the Kellen family, former board chair David Huggin, longtime Third Street Preschool teacher Cathy Guy, music publishers G. Schirmer Inc., and of course, the one and only Yoko Ono, who shared with the audience some poetic words of wisdom about believing in and loving yourself.

The evening featured student and alumni performances, an exciting live auction with celebrity auctioneer CK Swett, and moving speeches from the honorees—all in an absolutely gorgeous building that also happened to be built in 1894! The event also broke all of Third Street’s fundraising records, bringing in 80% more in revenue than the previous year’s anniversary luncheon for both the main school and the Third Street Partners program that brings music education into classrooms all over New York City, galvanizing a new community of friends and supporters from near and far.

Plans are already starting for this year’s gala, but for now, take a moment to enjoy the memories with some pictures from a fantastic night of fun and fundraising for Third Street!

incorporated into the design of the Hall.“Redesigning the beloved auditorium

was a special challenge because it required the integration of a multitude of new systems into a long and irregular space that

was not originally built for music and dance,” said project architect Jim Czajka who is teaming up with Westerman Construction on this project. “It was our goal to capture the history and

tradition of the space while making it a more modern and effectual rehearsal and performance space.”

Along with the Concert Hall’s reopening, attendees will also soon see the opening of the new Recital Hall in the school’s lower level, converted from the building’s former boiler room into a beautiful practice and performance space with high ceilings and room that accommodates 70 people. As renovations continue through next summer, introducing a new lobby and community space, a new passenger-operated elevator and second interior staircase, this space will also be outfitted with a state-of-the-art recording studio. Work has already begun to put together a curriculum in sound engineering and production for next year.

“Watching the downstairs Recital Hall emerge from the former boiler room has been a real pleasure,” said Jim Czajka. “Large, open, high-ceiling spaces are a rare commodity in an older New York building, and Third Street has been enormously lucky to have one waiting in the wings for development.”

“We are leveraging our cherished building with innovative design and incorporating creative approaches to better serve the Third Street Community and to make our home more compatible with 21st century,” said Valerie G. Lewis. “We look forward to showcasing the new spaces in their full glory this fall.”

Construction Update continued from cover

When it comes to playing an instrument, we know that children’s interests develop at different ages, as do their

focus and patience. For a few, the interest is there at three, for others it begins at age four or five or even later. Each year, a number of preschoolers make the leap into musicianship, choosing an instrument and beginning individual lessons at Third Street in the studios just down the hall from their preschool classrooms.

What is so fun about learning an instrument? Here are some response from the students themselves…

“I like that the bow has horsehair! And it makes a beautiful sound.”

“I like seeing what’s inside of the piano.”“I like skipping down the keys.”“I like playing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle,’

‘Pepperoni Pizza,’ ‘See the Ponies Galloping’…”

Third Street’s Director of Preschool & Early Childhood Programs Elaine Winter is passionate about giving the school’s youngest students the opportunity to pick up instruments early. “I’m proud that we can further this love of music in young children,” she said. “Through lively, interactive sessions our expanding Months of Music Curriculum introduces preschoolers to different instrument families. Every month a music teacher visits each preschool

classroom to demonstrate and describe their instruments. As children listen and respond, they internalize new rhythms and musical patterns and expand their knowl-edge about instruments and their unique musical qualities.”

Whether they move on to become budding musicians or simply enjoy a lifetime of music appreciation, this early investment is an important one. And it is part of what makes Third Street Preschool so special. In the words of Plato: “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy: but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” Or, as Pete Seeger said, “If I didn’t think music could help save the human race, I wouldn’t sing.”

Every year, it is exciting to see Preschoolers take that jump to explore their inner musician on a deeper level, and that they can develop as musicians throughout their lives right here at Third Street. Bravo, Preschool Musicians! In 2014, Third Street Music School Settlement and the New York Community Trust came together to award the first- ever Harris Scholarships to two exemplary

Third Street students: cellist Orion Doscher and clarinetist Brendan Gittens. Now in its second year, the groundbreaking program is providing three more recently-graduated public school seniors each with a four-year $20,000 college scholarship.

Kiana Mickles is a pianist who has attended Third Street since 2010 and participated in the Piano Certificate Program, a number of master classes and has been a top performer in Annual Auditions. She is attending Oberlin College, majoring in Environmental Studies.

Kelvin Ma is also a pianist and has attended Third Street since 2002. Over the course of his 12 years at the school, he has

participated in the Barbara E. Field Chamber Music Program, music theory, piano & chamber summer camps, Piano Certificate Program, Philharmonia, and many master classes and performances. He now attends Northeastern University for Engineering.

Gordan Lam is a pianist who has been at Third Street since 2004. He was a student in the school’s most advanced theory and composition courses while also taking individual piano lessons. He now attends Baruch College in Manhattan and to study Actuarial Science.

The Harris Scholarships are named for Charlotte Daniels Harris, a former

New York City public high school teacher

who believed in the power of music to change lives.

The Charlotte Daniels Harris Memorial Fund was established at the New York Community Trust to create a living legacy for the benefit of city public school students who study music and need financial support in order to pursue higher education. The $20,000 scholarships are granted in $5,000 disbursements each year of the students’

undergraduate studies at an accredited four-year college or university.

“The New York Community Trust is proud to work with Third Street Music School to launch the Harris Scholarship,” said Kerry McCarthy, Program Officer at The Trust. “The scholarships recognize musical achievement,

academic performance and community engagement.”

These scholarships are designed to help students like Kiana, Gordan and Kelvin attend college to study the major of their choice while at the same time remaining active musicians. “Third Street has been and always will be my irreplaceable second home,” said Gordan Lam about his more than ten years at the school. Fellow Harris recipient Kelvin Ma echoed his sentiment:

“I have been at Third Street since I was five and it has been a fundamental part of

my life. Not only has playing the piano at Third Street been an anchor throughout my life, it has also included me in a wonderful community of supportive people who have inspired me. And through the Harris Scholarship, it has helped me greatly to pursue higher education and I am forever grateful.”

Congratulations to all of the 2015-16 Harris Scholars, and best of luck in your future studies and musical adventures!

Stroll east from Third Street into Alphabet City, round the corner at Tompkins Square Park, and at 6th Street and Avenue B you’ll find Tompkins

Square Middle School (TSMS). Last spring, besides the usual quiet sounds of the classroom and the controlled chaos of passing periods at TSMS, a casual passer-by might also hear the pop of patch cords being plugged into amps, the distorted twang of guitars being tuned, and the click-click-click of drumsticks counting in a song by Bruno Mars. That’s because TSMS, along with one of its feeder elementary schools, East Village Community School (EVCS), now has a rock band.

This past school year, Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña launched a new Arts Continuum

Project that partners middle schools with their feeder elementary schools to aid the transition of arts learning from elementary to middle school. Third Street, in partnership with TSMS and EVCS, was the only music school in the city to be awarded a Continuum grant, of which only two were awarded to programs in Manhattan. The resulting rock band partnership counted off with the first icy winds of January and continued to shred and wail well into the warm weeks of June.

The partnership is one of Third Street’s more than two dozen Third Street Partners programs across New York City. In each school, Third Street designs a specific curriculum around the school’s needs. From African percussion and dance to full concert bands,

Third Street Partners brings music education to schools in high-need areas that can’t afford their own music departments or afterschool programs.

Third Street’s program with TSMS and EVCS is a combination show choir and rock band, drawing its repertoire from hit rock songs of every decade since the 1950s, which are performed by as many as 20 vocalists and instrumentalists at a time. The classes are taught in two sections: vocalists and keyboard players in one section; guitar, bass, and drums in the other. Veteran Third Street Guitar Instructors Ross Gallagher and Bryan Vargas (who returned to Third Street after a year-long touring stint with Fela! the Broadway musical) are joined by new faculty members Lauren Tenney and Angelo Spagnolo in teaching the classes.

“Students really love getting the chance to play rock music in school,” said Nick Scarim, manager of the program and a 35-year veteran as a Third Street teaching artist. “It becomes the highlight of their week to sit down at the drums, or pick up an electric guitar, stand in front of a microphone and express themselves through music.”

On September 23 and 24, the Houston Grand Opera presented the world premiere of O Columbia, a chamber opera composed by Third Street composition and music theory instructor Gregory Spears. The three-act opera centers on the tragic Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, while also celebrating the American spirit of exploration and the lives of those lost in the ill-fated 2003 space mission. When Koh Kazama first walked through the doors of Third Street Music School, he was six years old. Third Street had

visited his elementary school, The Neighbor-hood School, the year before as part of its partners program (at the time called MILES, now known as Third Street Partners) to teach general music classes. Inspired by the music instruction and an obscure Japanese rock band his father had shot a music video for, Koh picked up the guitar. Now, twenty years later, Koh’s story has come full circle as he is now the newest member of Third Street’s guitar faculty. “Koh always took his lessons seriously. Even as a beginner he played the simplest pieces beautifully,” said David Moreno, Chair of the Guitar Department. “It was clear early on that he would turn out to be an excellent guitarist.”

Even as he attended the famed LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and took up cello as a second instrument, Koh remained a student of Third Street, continuing his stud-ies in guitar under instructors like Nadav Lev and Liam Wood. He then went on to Yale University, where he received a Bachelor’s in

Psychology and a Master’s in Music, winning the Eliot Fisk Prize in the pro-cess—an award given to an outstanding guitarist whose artistic achievements and dedication have contributed to the success of the department.

During his time at Yale, Koh began his teaching career both as a private instructor and a Secondary Lessons Guitar Instructor for the university. He also began to give back to the kinds of community arts programs that gave him his start in guitar, working as a teaching artist in Yale’s Music in Schools community engagement program that places music educators in New Haven public schools.

“I realized how lucky I was to be able to take guitar lessons and how the Partners program helped start my journey to being a guitarist,” said Koh. “After benefiting greatly from a community music program myself, I felt a desire to give other students the opportunity I had and share my love for music with them.”

Now, returning to his very first musical home, Koh is back teaching where it all began for him. The quiet, reserved young man is no doubt an inspiration to his young students: once a student of Third Street,

now a graduate of Yale who has found success in both performance and teach-ing. An inspiring tale for any young stu-dent of Third Street that speaks to what they might become.

“Although it has been seven years since I was last a student at Third Street,” said Koh, “I felt like I had only left last year. I feel as if I am just returning to my family and feel very much at home. It is great to be back to the place where it all started for me.”

The human voice is the oldest instrument in the world, and at Third Street there is more opportunity than ever to get yours in tune! With the

appointment of faculty member Kaitlin Stark as the school’s Voice Department Chair, Third Street is focused on getting the very best out of its voice students and pro-viding them new opportunities to perform both at Third Street and around the city.

As a vocalist and choral instructor in the Third Street Partners program, Kaitlin has taught music classes at PS 110 and PS 19. Her classrooms are energetic and cheerful,

much like the woman herself. “She is a ray of sunshine,” said Gary Tigner, Director of Programs. “There is no way you can talk to Kaitlin without smiling. She’s wonderful with the students and the perfect person to lead the Voice Department as we continue to build our choirs.”

The Programs Department has already begun by consolidating the choirs from four to three ensembles to give students a clearer and smoother transition from one to the next as they advance through more difficult pieces and their voices change. Let’s All Sing provides an introduction to ensemble voice singing for Third Street’s the youngest vocalists, while Preludio is an intermediate choir that touches on two- and three-part harmonies. Finally, Chorale is for older students whose voices have changed, performing more complex SATB works by the end of the year.

“With the two eldest choirs combined, we will have the opportunity to learn more challenging and exciting music with a greater number of voices,” explained Kaitlin. “The more experienced students will have the chance to lead the younger singers, while also gaining the experience of singing within a large ensemble.”

Third Street’s voice students are in for a fantastic year with their new Voice Chair, full of new opportunities to grow as vocalists, musicians and performers. And along with Third Street faculty and staff, Kaitlin is excit-ed for the school year to begin. “I can’t wait to get started this year and work with such amazing students and faculty,,” she said. “I come from a diverse background of teaching and performing and I am excited to make music with the wonderful students of Third Street!”
