Join the Immaculate Conception Respect for Life Ministry The specter of Physician Assisted Suicide may come to the New York State via a bill (Assembly 2694 Paulin and Senate 3947 Savino) and a Governor who has said he would sign such legislation. This "Medical Aid in Dying Act" would add a new section of the Public Health Law to allow physicians to prescribe lethal doses of medication for the express purpose of ending a patient’s life. Last year, the Reproductive Health Act legalized abor-tion up till birth in New York. We need you and invite you to join this important ministry that promotes respect for human life at all stages from conception to natural death. Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 28 at 7 pm in the Parish Center, Room 7. If you have any questions, please contact Larry Smith at 518-384-0882 or [email protected].

Sunday, Jan 26, 2020 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Get your fishing license here A student can only be as good as the teacher offering the lesson. When Jesus walked the shores of Galilee, local fishermen had the chance to learn the gospel by living it. As we begin Catholic Schools Week, we honor all the fine teachers and administrators who sacrifice much to live the gospel with their students. We also salute parents who invest in their children’s religious education. Character can be shaped along with every lesson a child is taught. Make sure children you love are fishing in the richest waters.

READINGS: Isaiah 8:23—9:3; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17; Matthew 4:12-23 (67). “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Monday, Jan 27, 2020 Stop evil in its tracks It’s hard to imagine 6 million people. It’s the populations of Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, and San Diego combined. It was two-thirds of the entire population of Jews living in Europe between 1941 and 1945. It was the Holocaust. Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, when we call to mind the evil that is possible for human hearts to generate. We remember to tell the next generation. And we commit ourselves never again to tolerate the flourishing of racism, nationalism, or antisemitism in our society. Today is a good day to pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to bind the evil “strong man” of prejudice and intolerance in our society.

READINGS: 2 Samuel 5:1-7, 10; Mark 3:22-30 (317). “But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man.”

Tuesday, Jan 28, 2020 Memorial of Thomas Aquinas, Priest, Religious, Doctor of the Church

Order your life wisely Saint Thomas Aquinas, perhaps the greatest mind ever to probe the theological underpinnings of Christianity, wasn’t always so highly regarded. When he first spoke of his desire to become a Dominican friar, his disapproving family kidnapped him and held him in their castle for a year. Then, as a seminary student who was reluctant to talk, he was nicknamed “The Dumb Ox” by classmates. Yet, it’s fitting that Aquinas belonged to the Order of Preachers—the Dominicans—because he authored beautiful prayers. Take to heart his concluding words from “For Ordering a Life Wisely,” which he prayed daily: “Give to me, O Lord my God, understanding of You, diligence in seeking You, wisdom in finding You, discourse ever pleasing to You, perseverance in waiting for You, and confidence in finally embracing You.”

READINGS: 2 Samuel 6:12b-15, 17-19; Mark 3:31-35 (318). “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Wednesday, Jan 29, 2020 Every heart needs a home “The Catholic bishops believe decent, safe, and affordable housing is a human right,” according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. As social reformers and commentators draw more attention to the growing problem of homelessness in America, it is important for all of us to do what we can to support the bishops’ position, as they remind “communities and government of their obligation to ensure that the housing needs of all are met, especially poor and vulnerable people and their families.” Take time today to look up or pray with seven themes of Catholic social teaching.

READINGS: 2 Samuel 7:4-17; Mark 4:1-20 (319). “Thus says the Lord: Should you build me a house to dwell in? I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought you out of Egypt . . . but have been going about in a tent under a cloth.”

Thursday, Jan 30, 2020 The hidden power of ordinary days We’re well into what the church’s liturgical calendar calls “Ordinary Time,” the period between sacred seasons. For many in the north, the cold and snow of winter have become a drag. The anticipation of Advent and the excitement of Christmas and Epiphany are long over. Yet this too can be a period of conversion, a time when our faith can quietly grow. “Ordinary Time,” declares the Catechism, “is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ.” If you experience mid-winter blahs, rest assured that God is quite capable of using ordinary, mundane days to foster true discipleship.

READINGS: 2 Samuel 7:18-19, 24-29; Mark 4:21-25 (320). “For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light.”

Friday, Jan 31, 2020 MEMORIAL OF JOHN BOSCO, PRIEST Patience is an inside job Saint John Bosco was a wonderworker—and not just because he ministered so effectively to troubled youth, transforming the most rambunctious of street kids into young men of virtue, honesty, and skill. He’s become the patron saint of youth ministry, and not just for his method of mixing fun with faith. From a very young age, Don Bosco had visions of the work he would do, leading to his merciful way of dealing with the young lives that society scorned. “It is more fitting to be persistent in punishing our own impatience and pride than to correct the boys,” he wrote to a colleague. “This was the method Jesus used with the apostles.” Ask Don Bosco to help you be positive and patient today.

READINGS: 2 Samuel 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17; Mark 4:26-34 (321). “He spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it.”

Saturday, Feb 1, 2020 The miracle worker Do you believe in miracles? As a Catholic, you must believe in some: the very life of Jesus, for starters, from Annunciation to Ascension, and all the things he did in between. But what about apparitions of Mary, eucharistic miracles, and unexplainable healings attributed to the intercession of saints? While belief in those is not required, the church says miracles do happen and rigorously verifies many. They are works of God, proof that God’s here among us, interacting with us, out of love. Go ahead and ask for one.

READINGS: 2 Samuel 12:1-7a, 10-17; Mark 4:35-41 (322). “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”

From the Pastor:

Twice today we hear the words, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Even though we just heard these words a month ago a Christmas, it is appropriate to hear them once again. Jesus began his mission by fulfilling he words of the great prophet Isaiah. Today we contemplate the mission we are called to and pray that we can fulfill the plan God has for each of us.

Last weekend we were blessed with more snow. Our snow volunteers had the campus clean as a whistle by 7 am Sunday morning and I am so very thankful. If you would like to share your time using a shovel or

a snow blower, please call the parish office. We can always us some extra hands! Speaking of last weekend, attendance was down because of the snow, which is no surprise. The offertory was down as well, though our expenses remain the same. If you were unable to attend Mass and are able, please consider an extra gift in the weeks to come. We also offer the option of secure automatic e-giving if you are interested. Please call the office for more information. Either way, your generosity is always appreciated.

Congratulations to our Faith Formation team, Madeline Fretto and Michele DeLorenzo and their all of their helpers for the Bingo Bonanza last week! There was a good turn out and a great deal of fun. Thank you to one and all who participated in any way. We are grateful for funds generated for Pastoral Care and for the parish. Check out the picture on the cover of this bulletin!

Our Pastoral Council met last Sunday and here are some of the highlights from the meeting:

The white house on the corner of our property, where Fr. Connery lived, will be offered to any retired priest who may wish to rent it. If a priest does not occupy the home, we will be in discussion with the diocese to see if an immigrant family could live there. The latter will need more discussion and information from the diocese.

It was recommended that we install a flag pole somewhere on the property and dedicated it to all of our veterans.

We will actively look to install cameras for the church, rectory and parish center.

It was proposed that that the Parish Center be named “The J. Thomas Connery Center.” This could take place on or around the first anniversary of +Fr. Connery’s death, next October 31. Again, more information will be forthcoming.

The need for automatic doors for the new parish center remains. Some of the monies donated in memory of +Fr. Connery have been earmarked for this project. The gifts received have been substantial, but are not sufficient. If you are able and interested in donating to this project, call the parish office.

Lent is still a number of weeks away, but February is upon us and that means many priests will be on vacation. I will be away from Feb 7 through Feb 17. Fr. Tom Hayes will be here to cover both weekends. Fr. Richard Carlino will cover our 9 am Masses on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. For the entire month of February there will be no 7 am Masses on Thursdays and Fridays as Fr. Leo Markert will be away for the entire month.

We recently celebrated two landmark birthdays among our parish family. Milly Morgan celebrated her 90th birthday and Joseph Aglio his 85th. We wish them abundant blessings and are grateful for their faithful journey with us!

On February 19, our country will mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. On February 16, at the 11 am mass we will acknowledge parishioners Sal Famularo and Dr. Tom Smith, who were both in that landmark battle.

I wish to say a special hello to Kay Ksenych who reads our bulletin from cover to cover each week! Hello Kay! We are thinking and praying for you. Please pray for all of us! God bless you!

Until next week, be well, do good deeds and say your prayers. Fr. Jerry
