Third Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Ann Catholic Church January 27, 2019

Dear Friends,

Allow me to spend some time talking, once again, about the unique benefit and importance of the Classical education we strive to provide at our school, Light of Christ Academy.

People often demand statistics that classical education works. This is a fair request, since it is only recently that it has come back into favor; in that sense, it is “untested”. However, with a wider view of history, it is a surprising request. The best response is pointing to what has happened to our educational system and our culture ever since we abandoned our appreciation for classical education and our Western cultural heritage.

Whatever your background, I don’t think there is anyone that thinks our children are better educated now than in the past. Is our technology better? Yep. Is there anything else we can boast over our ancestors in terms of being better formed, more moral, wiser (not just being able to access more information on our phones)? Nope.

Perhaps some might take issue with the focus on Western civilization and culture. Isn’t this narrow minded? Not at all. First of all, here in the West, it

makes sense for us to be in touch with our cultural roots. Second of all, it is due to the West - its Greco-Roman roots and Christian fulfilment - that we even have the values which we consider so sacrosanct: human dignity, personhood, freedom, altru-ism, etc.

If we polled exasperated parents in this social media-driven culture, what would they say that our younger generations need the most? More technology? More entertainment? Nope. Almost certainly the majority would say: “Some kind of stability. A moral compass. Virtue. The ability to think for themselves. The ability to communicate.” These are all things that classical education aims to provide. Not just information and preparation for a pragmatic and materialistic life.

Does modern education address the soul? No. It either denies or ignores the soul. It treats our young as receptacles of information and nothing more. Can we really call anything “education” that ignores the most important aspect of a human person?

So, the better question is: Where is the data that our abandonment of classical education has benefitted us?

In Christ,

Fr Marotti

This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week together. We want to thank our parish family for all of their support over the past year. Our school is expanding and our students are growing in mind, heart and character. We are so blessed to be part of the St. Ann Church family. During this week we will celebrate in the following ways:

MONDAY: We celebrate vocations. Students have created posters depicting why they appreciate their Catholic school. The posters are on display in the social hall. They are holding a penny war contest for the best poster. Proceeds from the penny war will be donated to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and will be earmarked for vocations formation. Also, the students will create spiritual bouquets for priests and seminarians.

TUESDAY: We celebrate our families. Light of Christ Academy families will join together in the evening for a meal together.

WEDNESDAY: We celebrate first responders. Students will be decorating cookies for them.

THURSDAY: Students will participate in the All Schools Mass held at Hackett Catholic Prep.

FRIDAY: We celebrate teachers and staff. There is a surprise in store at LCA!

SATURDAY: We celebrate our parish. Look for us as we show our gratitude for the support of the St. Ann Parishioners.

WELCOME TO ST. ANN CHURCH!

If you have been considering joining St. Ann Church we have made it super easy! Just stop in the office and say “hi” and pick up a Welcome folder. Inside you will find a registration form, a parish directory, and information on the many activities in which you can get involved. If the office is closed, folders can also be found on the counter in the vestibule. We are very excited to meet you! Blessings!! Visit stannaugusta.org for more info!

ARE YOU BEING CALLED?

St Vincent needs phone workers on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 10-12. Especially Tuesdays! The basic duty is taking intake information from clients for the committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Lots of training provided Contact Bobby Kinkela at [email protected] or call 269-731-4721 ext. 50 for more information. This is very satisfying work and direct contact with those we serve. Please consider it. Thanks!

JOIN IN THE FUN OF FELLOWSHIP

We would like to invite you to join us for coffee, donuts and fellowship. There are still several spots open to host on Sundays in February and March. As a host you would put out donuts, make sure the drinks are filled and then clean up. You only need to sign up for after one of the Masses on a Sunday. You can register to host by going to our “Sign up Genius” online. You need to put in your name and email so we can remind you the week before about your commitment. If we have both 9 am and 11 am filled out by the Thursday before, we'll be able to have donuts on that Sunday. If no one signs up, then we won't have donuts. To sign up go to our website at stannaugusta.org/donuts

FIRST SATURDAY MASS AND DEVOTION

Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form

FEB 2 I 8:30 am

We invite all to join us in making the First Saturday Devotion which Our Blessed

Mother requested and made known through Sister Lucia, one of the Fatima seers. This devotion has great power to prevent evil and obtain peace in our world.

BRING IN YOUR PALMS! We are getting ready for Ash Wednesday on March 6th and it’s time to collect last year’s palms to burn.

Did you know that Palms are considered sacramentals? "Sacramentals are sacred signs which in a sense imitate the sacraments. They signify certain effects, especially spiritual ones, and they achieve these effects through the intercession of the Church." [C.C.C. # 1166] Palms become sacramentals when they are blessed by the Church for Palm Sunday and are to then be treated with reverence. Therefore, one should never throw blessed palms away in the garbage. Rather, one should bring them back to the church where Deacon and/or Father will burn them to use as the ashes for Ash Wednesday.

You can drop your palms off in the baskets found at the church.

OLDER BUNCH FOR LUNCH Help Needed!

THUR I MARCH 7 I 9:00 am-3:00 pm

Older bunch for lunch is a senior citizen luncheon started by the United Way of Michigan almost thirty years ago. In the absence of a community center for seniors the United Way approached area churches and asked them to sponsor a luncheon followed by a short program to give senior citizens a time of education, entertainment but most of all fellowship. Many area churches responded, so much so that each church is responsible for only one luncheon a year. At St. Ann we

host OBFL the first Thursday in March. The menu is designed to provide a hot meal, usually something one would not prepare for one or two people. We serve approximately 80 people including staff and volunteers. It is a time to welcome local residents into our church, evange-lize and shower them with hospitality. Sometimes baked goods are provided by volunteers. The time commitment is just one day a year from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The day involves setup, food prep, serv-ing and cleanup. If you are interested in volunteering contact Melon Lasich at 269•731•5995.
