PROTECT MARRIAGE!

Legislators will be voting soon on whether to change the current law defining marriage. Marriage between a man

and a woman is essential for family life and is the foundation of any society. Please call, email or write your state

Senator and two Representatives urging them to support the current law and defend marriage as the union of one

man and one woman.

Call 1-800-562-6000 to leave a message for your legislators. Go to the Washington State Legislature website at:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/Default.aspx to find your legislator and to write or email a message to them.

Homily

After John had been arrested, Jesus began to proclaim a time of fulfillment. John, the forerunner of the Messiah,

began to recede unimportance while Jesus increased as the one who brings fulfillment. For you and for me, fulfill-

ment can only happen as we make room in our lives for Jesus to increase, increase and ever more to increase in

the space where we decrease, decrease, and ever more decrease. This time of fulfillment is when God becomes our

all in all.

Saint Paul said the time is running out. It is time to act differently. He does not mean change aimlessly from day to

day. He means change in the way that will make you ready for the judgment day.

Do you know someone who has changed his or her life because something was wrong and needed to be fixed? I

do. His name is Mark Wahlberg, better known to some as "Marky Mark". Mark got married in August of 2009 to

his girlfriend of eight years, with whom he had three children. Their marriage took place at Good Shepherd

Catholic Church in Beverly Hills. Both bride and groom said they wanted to make a commitment and to provide a

good home for their children. They become one in a Catholic marriage in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. In

an interview, Mark said he was ashamed of most of the movies he had made in his life, and he did not want his

children to see his old movies. Last week, I went to see Mark's new movie "Contraband". I was interested to find

out if it was any different from his previous movies. It was full of action and tough guy talk, but there were no

raunchy sex scenes. So Mark Wahlberg is one Catholic father who heard the warning to clean up his act and

mended his ways. Well done.

And well done to each one of us, my friends, when we see the need to mend our ways. Our shame because of past

thoughts and actions can lead us into a new time of fulfillment. If any of us thinks we have nothing to warrant

shame, then our standards are too low. If any of us says yes, then may shame lead to an examination of conscience

and to a good confession. For help in an examination of conscience, I recommend using the Ten Commandments

from Exodus chapter twenty, and the Beatitudes from Matthew chapter five.

God is still sizing up our lives according to a very high standard of behavior. Jonah preached repentance to the

Ninevites, and all of them were spared because they humbled themselves, both great and small, and put on sack-

cloth. We do not need to put on sackcloth to repent - we have each other. Mending our ways, as fathers and

mothers, and husbands and wives, as brothers and sisters, as priest and parishioners, can seem at times to be like

wearing sackcloth because it is so uncomfortable. In that holy discomfort, may we decrease so that God may in-

crease, and may the promised time of fulfillment come upon us.

Father Bryon Dickey
