    Scripture Corner:

    THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11Isaiah describes the joy and salvation which will ac-company the coming of Christ. He compares the plants which spring from a garden to the justice that will spring from all nations.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24Paul reminds the Thessalonians to constantly ready themselves for Christ’s arrival. He tells them to “avoid any semblance of evil” so that they may be found irreproachable when Jesus does arrive.

Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28 John explains that he is only a messenger to the peo-ple for one more powerful than himself. John stress-es to them that they must make a path for the one so powerful that he is not fit to unfasten the strap of his sandal.

During the Advent season as we prepare for the birth of our Lord and reassess our priorities in life, we should also strive for a greater understanding and appreciation for the ministries in our parish, and look within our hearts to determine what role stew-ardship plays in our lives.

This season, we trust that you will give financial stewardship prayerful consideration. Our parish has been using an Online Giving system that is strengthening stewardship as well as making it easi-er for members to support our parish. Your regular contributions support the operation of the church and all of our ministries. Sign up today by visiting our church website and choosing Give Online. On behalf of the entire staff, we want to thank you for the contributions you continually provide to our parish. “Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
