Amar Es Entregarse Office of Worship

TO: Priests, Deacons, Pastoral Administrators FM: Office of Worship, S. Jeremy Gallet, SP RE: Consecutive Holy Days of Obligation ______________________________________________________________ Some parishes have asked for clarification regarding the obligation to attend Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Day the following Monday. These two celebrations do not follow the “Saturday-Monday” rule for holy Days of Obligation. Christmas is always a holy day of obligation as is the Immaculate Conception (since Mary under that title is the patroness of the United States). When either of these two feasts fall on a Saturday or a Monday, the faithful are expected to attend Mass for both the particular celebration and the Sunday adjoining it. This year the 4th Sunday of Advent is immediately followed by Christ-mas on Monday. It is not permitted to attend only one Mass to fulfill both obligations. The faithful may attend the anticipated Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent (Saturday evening) or the morning Mass on Sunday, December 24 to fulfill their Sunday obligation. Then they have the choice of attending an evening Mass on Christmas Eve (such as a family Mass or midnight Mass) or participating in a morning Mass on Monday, December 25th. I hope you find this clarification helpful. If you have further questions, feel free to call or email the Office of Worship.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Last week, we looked at a form of nativity scene called a presipio, characterized by framing the crèche of Jesus with a vast array of personalities and a rich geographical context. The tradition was carried to the New World, and finds very rich expression in Latin America today. While in Europe the presepio was reserved mostly to the homes of wealthy nobles and great churches, in Latin America it was claimed by the poor and expressed the skills of native artisans. In Mexico, you can still find clay figures in every village market. In a way, the native people took the religion of Spanish rule and baptized it with their Indian culture by surrounding the crib of Jesus with local geography and people. In Brazil, where Christmas falls in summer, the figure of the baby Jesus is wrapped in gold and gems, and set on a hillside surrounded by flowers and animals of all kinds. Sometimes there is a double presepio, presenting both Nativity and Crucifixion. In some places in Latin America, even non-religious people take care to have a presepio in the home, sometimes dedicating one whole room in the house or apartment to the scene. Some cities have markets where people from the coun-tryside sell plants and figurines. In Cuzco, churches and families provide hot choco-late for the children of the poor who come down to help create the nativity scenes. In Paraguay, the baby Jesus grows—the small infant who arrives on Christmas Eve is replaced at New Year with a toddler Jesus who holds in one hand the globe and in the other a cross. Few Christmas traditions have the vitality and variety of presepios and crèches honoring the Nativity. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PANORAMA OF THE NEW TESTAMENT

SCRIPTURE STUDY Sept., 2017 - May, 2018

The world of the New Testament is so far removed from our modern world that it is sometimes difficult to understand what we hear in the Sunday readings or read in

Scripture and how it relates to God’s message of salvation for our world today. Our scripture study this year is titled, “Panorama of the New Testament”, a study which will reveal the continued plan of salvation as it unfolded among the first genera-tions of Christians from the missionary preaching of St. Paul and the Gospel stories of Jesus through the persecution of the early Christians as encoded in the book of Revela-tion and God’s promise of a “New Heaven and a New Earth.” This overview is beneficial both for newcomers to scripture study, as well as those who have already studied much of the New Testament. Our study meets on Monday evenings, beginning on Sept. 18, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm on the first floor of the John Paul II building and is repeated on Thursday mornings which began on Sept 21, in our Parish Library. The cost of our text is $17.00. For more infor-mation, please contact Mary Ann Andel at 987-9312 x 250

Raising Pro-Life Children

It often takes many decades to correct social injustices and human rights' problems. For example, it took many decades to abolish slavery. Our gener-ation might not see an end to the injus-

tice of abortion. However, the younger generation is becoming increas-ingly pro-life and it is vitally important that we raise pro-life children. If so, they will one day see our nation becoming one of liberty and justice not just for some, but for all human beings. A baby and, indeed, life itself, is nothing short of a miracle. As faithful Catholics, we should be teaching our children ---at every opportunity---that all human beings, at all stages of development, should be cherished, respected, loved and protected at all times. Also, we need to teach children that being pro-life does not only mean opposing abortion. Sometimes, children are born with disease, Down syndrome or some other problem---and these children are nevertheless all precious gifts from God and are extremely valuable, no matter what. Teaching children to have a pro-life attitude is the indispensable antidote to today's selfish, "me-first" society, with many people more concerned about pleasure or money than the inherent value and dignity of every human life. "A person's a person, no matter how small." Horton Hears a Who! Dr. Seuss.

RCIA—Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Is God calling you to become Catholic?

It begins with an awareness...or stirring in one’s heart for something more. It could be a curiosity or a sense of long for fulfillment. Maybe it’s God calling you to explore the life of faith, love, and justice within the community of the Catholic Church. The RCIA process offers an opportunity for you to learn and ask ques-tions about the Catholic faith. It is primarily for the un-baptized, but also includes a special tract for those baptized in another faith tradition. We also invite inquiring Catholics to come and join us for a refresher on what they learned as children We meet all year round.

Please come and join us Tuesday evenings from 7:30PM to 9:30PM in the Parish Library.

RCIA - A Teaching Moment What does the term “Hypostatic Union” mean ?

The union of the divine nature of Christ as God with his human nature as man. Christ is true God and true man, and possesses two natures, one divine, and one human, without confusion. Although they are inseparably united, each nature retains its proper characteristics. Thus Christ, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity did not just assume the physical aspects of a human being while on earth, he actually became man, both in body and soul. The Cate-chism of the Catholic Church paragraph # 469 says this: “The Church thus confesses that Jesus is inseparably true God and True man. He is truly the Son of God who, without ceasing to be God and Lord, became a man and our brother”.

(RCIA) Adapted for Children and Teens Children (ages 7-12) and Teens (ages 13-17) who are interested in joining the

Catholic Church are invited to participate in the RCIA adapted for Children and Teens. The goal is to provide a means of conversion suited to the stu-dent’s age and understanding, and to prepare them for the reception of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirma-tion). Parents and sponsors share a loving journey with the student’s by at-tending sessions with them and assisting them as they learn about Jesus and the Church, and ensuring that they experience a Catholic environment in the home. To participate more fully in this journey, we encouraged you to attend scheduled retreats, weekly Mass, special celebrations, and the Easter Litur-gy. Our sessions begin in September and end in June.

Sessions held every Wed.6-7:30 pm. – (JPII, 2nd Fl) Feel free to contact us anytime throughout the year for program information

Tips on Coping With Grief During The Holidays

Holidays can be difficult to endure after losing a loved one. Here are some tips to help you get through these difficult times. Acknowledge the holidays will be different and they will be tough. Decide which traditions you want to keep. Create a new tradition in memory of our loved one. Make new

memories. Plan ahead and communicate with the people you will spend the

holidays with in advance, to make sure everyone is in agreement about traditions and plans.

Remember that not everyone will be grieving the same way you are grieving.

Special prayers can be said in memory of your loved one. Be sure to eat a nutritious diet, exercise, get adequate sleep and

avoid alcohol. Journal when you are having an especially bad day. Don’t get trapped, when you go to holiday events, drive yourself so

you can leave if it gets to be too much. Don’t feel guilty if you skip the cards, decorations or even the

holiday. Be kind to yourself.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the Father of compassion and God of all comfort, who comforts us in

all our troubles.” May the Lord Bless you and give you courage, if you need encourage-ment or have questions please call Andrea Woore at 909 261-3487.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increas-ingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines

of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Fran-cis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration TRIPLES VOCATIONS

Bishop John Magee of Cloyne in Eire, Ireland reports that voca-tions to the priesthood in his diocese have tripled since he start-ed Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. In 1990 there were 17 semi-

narians and by 1993 the number had risen to 45. - "By Your Fruits", Dr. J. F. Boyle. "The Link", January 1996

"Mary adored Jesus as the Bridegroom of souls. Union is the final purpose of love. Jesus by the gift of His substance in the

Eucharist unites Himself with our souls as with His dear spous-es. As a Bridegroom, He gives them all His possessions, His name, His heart, His whole Self, but on the condition that the

soul reciprocates. The soul, His spouse, shall live for Him only,"

- St. Peter Julian Eymard

ex}É|vx4 Isaiah proclaims truly good news to us! God’s coming brings not sadness, guilt, fear, wrath, or condemnation. No, God’s coming is a source of comfort and joy. Saying it once is not enough, for today’s readings are full of joy. Mary’s Magnificat substitutes for our psalm today, and our second reading encourages us to rejoice, to give thanks and praise. This is the root meaning of the Greek word for eucharist. We are urged to rejoice and give thanks, because the coming of the Lord brings joy, healing, liberty, release, vindication. It makes the very earth spring up with new life! Good tidings! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
