A Note from Fr. Sean,
A Moving Target: The Cheese in the Maze
When I was a kid, I used to love to read Value Tales stories by Spencer Johnson, MD. This was
quite miraculous because as a kid I did not like to read, but these stories were short, sweet, and to
the point - plus there were good pictures, too. When I started working at Staples, we carried a
small selection of business-related books, and I was pleased to notice that we carried a short
volume titled Who Moved My Cheese? penned by this same author. It would be several years before I read this little
book myself, at the prompting of my spiritual director upon my entrance into seminary.
The book is a business parable about two mice and two humans the size of mice who run around a maze looking
for cheese. When they find cheese, they hang around, eat and only move if the cheese runs out. One day the little
humans decide to stay put, build a house and effectively retire from running around the maze, because the cheese in
that place was being replenished with greater frequency than in previous instances. The mice, on the other hand,
simply tied their shoes together and placed them around their necks, ready to go to wherever the cheese moved next.
One day the cheese in fact moved, and the mice put their shoes on and resumed their course around the maze in
search of more cheese - which they found, because the cheese was always there, it was just on the move.
The little humans, on the other hand, had become comfortable in the house they built. They refused to resume their
search for cheese, convinced that the cheese would come back to them- it had to, they reasoned. They became quite
insistent that the cheese was theirs and that they had a right to it - they were entitled to it. Eventually the humans died
of starvation because they refused to move to go to where the cheese was. The mice survived and thrived because
they knew they had to go wherever the cheese went.
The moral of the story? Our human thinking, with all its superiority, can get bogged down in pride and entitlement
and laziness, whereas the animal instinct for survival, exhibited by the mice, kept them alive and full of cheese. I have
always liked this story, have preached on it several times over the years, and have used it as an example of the need to
stay nimble and ready to go wherever God wants us to go. I had planned on using this story to write an article in July
to talk about the changes happening in our parish and around the diocese - change of priestly personnel as well as the
change in culture, to a culture of evangelization and missionary discipleship, called for by Uniting in Heart. Yet, the
pandemic and quarantine have inspired me to write about the cheese now.
In this case, the cheese is being moved constantly. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the messaging has
changed dramatically: One minute we are being ordered not to wear masks, now in many places masks are required.
One minute the coronavirus is like the flu, the next minute it is significantly different and more dangerous. One
minute there is toilet paper on the shelves, and the next minute the paper goods section of every store is empty. You
get the idea. Our lives have been upended and we don’t know when the dramatic measures to mitigate the virus will
end. We all wonder when things will go back to “normal” - when will the cheese come back to where I am? Well,
from what I have read and heard - and otherwise assumed - there will be no return to what we knew of as “normal.”
Sure, the restrictions will be loosened according to some set schedule, and they will be loosened gradually, in which
case we as a Church will have to adjust along the way. The cheese is gonna keep moving - we have to keep our shoes
on so that we can move with it. This is not just a case of surviving new cultural circumstances- this is a case of
survival itself. May we remember that God is at the heart of everything we live for. If we forget that, we have already
lost the reason for living.
Yours in Christ,
