Seventh Sunday of Easter May 28th, 2017

PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and friends, I am going to be away from the parish for a few days, from Wednesday evening and returning on June 8th. I know I leave you in very good hands and I hope you say a prayer that I can just relax for a few days. But before I go I wanted to say congratulations to the following young men and women who made their first Holy Communion last weekend.

Remember them in your prayer: Giovanni Abad, Isabella Abad, Alazne Argues, Simone Baltateanu, Julia Barrionuevo, Isabella Bartoletti, Natalie Bauernfeind, Keila Casasola Beauburn, Brayden Bezinski, Emmanuelle Blanchard, Alexander Charecky, Ana Chippas, Claire Colandrea, Sebastian Cunto, Charlotte Delson, Michael Nicholas Flavin, Joseph Francfort, Andre Sebastian Fraga, Olivia Gianettino, Sabrina Gonzalez, Santiago Hernandez Ochoa, Adam Hermosura, Zayanna Herron-Nava, Ava Wenzl Hlibczuk, Astrid Inda, Noah Innocent, Sofia Jackson, Teaghan Krieg, Arianna Madison, Jasper Mallorca, Aidan Malone, Mia Martinez, Keylor Martinez, Ryan Meyer, Max Motherway, Xavier Neptune, Caroline Nix, Hailey O’Dwyer, Abigail Rose Potenza, Alexa Quevedo, Sofia Ramos, Michael Rivera, Jack Anthony Rubino, Ayden Roche, Genevieve Sanborn, Erick Santiago, Niamh Selby-Curran, Emma Sullivan, Leandra Soriano, Shea Stone, John Sullivan, Elizabeth Tirado-Crespo, Miles Tobiasen, Maya Trowse, Lea Truong, Lorenzo Udarelli, Paige Villaruz, Lucia Waddell-Rodriguez, Margo Walsh, Finley Webb, & Finlay Williams.

And thank you to Tina Silvestro and her team of catechists: Melissa Raimondo, Kate Quinn, Ariana Stolar, and Linda Munoz as well as Caroline Sliney and Michelle Lipani, and all who had a part to play in guiding these young men and women in this most special moment. Today we celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter- and Jesus, having completed the work of His Father, speaks of returning to Him, but we have nothing to fear since He will send us His Spirit, which we will celebrate in a very special way next Sunday, the Feast of Pentecost. Speaking about next Sunday, the children who are too young for Sunday School are invited to join in a very special Pentecost celebration in the school cafeteria directly after the 10AM Mass. Everyone is encouraged to wear red for this very special Pentecost party. Also, Pentecost will be the last day for Sunday School, and after the last class the Sunday School children will have an end of the year celebration. Wednesday of this week is the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when Mary came to visit Elizabeth. What a gift it must have been for those two women to spend time together given their miraculous pregnancies and their unique experiences of God. God brought them together, and their companionship during this time must have been a source of mutual comfort, encouragement, and joyful anticipation. We should praise God for knowing our needs even before we are aware of them and caring for us through the love and friendship of those around us. Thursday is the feast of St Justin Martyr, a philosopher who became one of Church’s first apologists, exploring the rational basis of faith, and arguing that true philosophy would lead to Christ. Saturday is quite a day for it is the anniversary of the death of one of the great Popes of my lifetime now a saint- John XXIII. It is also the feast of St. Charles Lwanga and his companions. One of the first African martyrs, St. Charles, a native of Uganda, served the king as a master of pages whose primary task was to train young people in royal service. Unfortunately he was thrust into this positon during the reign

of the anti-Christian king, Mwanga. As a recent convert Charles felt impelled to catechize the young pages in Christianity, which led to several baptisms. When the King found out about Charles’ actions, he demanded that Charles and the newly Baptized renounce their faith, but they remained steadfast in their beliefs resulting in their arrests and sentence to death. Charles and six others were wrapped in a reed mat and burned to death . Work will begin tomorrow on the HandiLift- pray with me that all will be well and completed by the end of the week. During that time our maintenance staff has erected a temporary ramp which we will lay out if we know someone is coming. If you’re able, please call the rectory in advance. The restoration of the church exterior continues on and if you have not yet made a pledge it would be most helpful towards the restoration of this wonderful Temple. Finally, today is the last day for the Parish Pay challenge grant. Over the last several weeks we have had some success with new sign ups and others increasing their regular giving. Thanks to all. As always let us continue to pray for peace and to remember especially those killed and still suffering in Manchester and throughout the world. Father Duffell ACCESSIBILITY Thanks to the generosity of one donor we are almost ready to begin the installation of the new HandiLift. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, May 29th, and for the duration of the installation there will be no Lift in operation. The installation itself will take four days, but testing could prolong the process. During that time, our maintenance crew will assist anyone who needs access to the church with a temporary ramp. Please be mindful that if you do need access via the ramp or HandiLift, it is helpful to call the rectory when you arrive to church so we can assist. Thank you for your patience as we work through this very necessary upgrade. BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH CAMPAIGN AND REPAIR UPDATE April showers bring…more leaks! The last heavy rain once again proved to us the extent of the needed repairs, with water leaking through open mortar joints in the church façade, down through the walls of the east choir staircase. While our Architect and Contractor continue to submit samples of replacement mortar and stone to the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission for approval, work is moving along. The initial phase of the brick pointing is underway on both the east and west sides of the church.

Seventh Sunday of Easter May 28th, 2017

Giovanni Abad, Isabella Abad, Alazne Argues, Simone Baltateanu, Julia Barrionuevo, Isabella Bartoletti, Natalie Bauernfeind, Keila Casasola Beauburn, Brayden Bezinski, Emmanuelle Blanchard, Alexander Charecky, Ana Chippas, Claire Colandrea, Sebastian Cunto, Charlotte Delson, Michael Nicholas Flavin, Joseph Francfort, Andre Sebastian Fraga, Olivia Gianettino, Sabrina Gonzalez, Santiago Hernandez Ochoa, Adam Hermosura, Zayanna Herron-Nava, Ava Wenzl Hlibczuk, Astrid Inda, Noah Innocent, Sofia Jackson, Teaghan Krieg, Arianna Madison, Jasper Mallorca, Aidan Malone, Mia Martinez, Keylor Martinez, Ryan Meyer, Max Motherway, Xavier Neptune, Caroline Nix, Hailey O’Dwyer, Abigail Rose Potenza, Alexa Quevedo, Sofia Ramos, Michael Rivera, Jack Anthony Rubino, Ayden Roche, Genevieve Sanborn, Erick Santiago, Niamh Selby-Curran, Emma Sullivan, Leandra Soriano, Shea Stone, John Sullivan, Elizabeth Tirado-Crespo, Miles Tobiasen, Maya Trowse, Lea Truong, Lorenzo Udarelli, Paige Villaruz, Lucia Waddell-Rodriguez, Margo Walsh, Finley Webb, & Finlay Williams.

Padre Duffell. MOVING WITH THE SPIRIT!
