Minute of Mercy

HOPE AMIDST LIFE’S TRIALS

It is a fact that life has many burdens and trials. They come in many different forms and degrees and no one is exempt from them. As difficult as they may be, it is imperative we understand that God in His infinite wisdom allows the trials, yet tailor fashions them for each of us according to our life’s vocation and our weaknesses, all to teach us His ways. We need only seek to know His ways. Trials and burdens are opportunities He grants us to prove our love and devotion to Him with the intent to always draw us closer to Him. This does not necessarily take away our trials but encourages us to keep the faith and hope in Him.

Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1817)

When our hope ceases, discouragement and eventually despair occur deep within us. This lack of trust is a sin because it is con-trary to God’s goodness and mercy, for He is always faithful to all His promises. So what are we to do? Turn to the Holy Spirit, the giver of all good gifts, to grant the grace of hope for it is a good and right thing to do. It is prayer that will cultivate and nurture the important virtue of hope.

“Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)

Circumstances such as unemployment or underemployment can lead to despondency, discouragement, anger, and even in the most severe cases, suicidal thoughts or actions. This week let us pray for those experiencing underemployment or unemployment in hopes that in a short time they will find relief for themselves and their families.

Mercy in Action

This week’s Mercy in Action is for all of St. Peter Parish to reach out or pray for someone who is unemployed or underemployed.

We have been blessed by the Hand of God again this year with 53 adults and children in our RCIA and RCIC here at St. Peter Parish

Each year at the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming, the parish gives each in the RCIA/RCIC process a Bible as a gift. During this rite, to be celebrated on December 4th, those in the process express their inten-tion to respond to God’s call to follow the way of Christ. The Bible is given to assist them with God’s call.

Would you like to give a donation towards purchasing a Bible to give to one of our inquirers? The cost of each Bible is $30.00. If you would like to donate one, please make the check payable to St. Peter Parish with a notation for an RCIA Bible. You may place it in the collection, or drop it off at the Rectory or Ministry Center. You can also mail it to: Ruth Prats, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433.

Archdiocesan Policy on Mass Intentions

Only two Masses per week are celebrated for more than one intention. These Masses for St. Peter Parish are Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 8:00 a.m. All other Masses are single intention Masses. One Mass every Sunday is celebrated for the intention of the parishioners. The usual donation for a Mass is $5.

The St. Peter Mass Book for 2017 Opens Wednesday, November 2nd, at 8 a.m.

Requests for Masses, Sanctuary Lamp, Blessed Mother Lamp, and Adoration Chapel Lamp intentions for 2017 can be requested at this time.

Due to the overwhelming request for single intention Sunday Masses, we need to limit these Sunday Mass requests to once a month for the year.

All Mass requests must be submitted in writing and include the name, mailing address, and phone number of the person requesting the Masses. Donations need to be attached to the request.

Requests can be brought to the rectory beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. Please, No Early Submissions. If a single intention Mass is requested, please provide an alternate Saturday 4:00 p.m. or Sunday 8:00 a.m.

Mass, (These are our multiple intention Masses) in case the first choice is not available. The requests will be handled in order of receipt. A confirmation letter of Masses scheduled will be mailed.

TMIY meets every Thursday: 5:45 - 7:15 a.m. in St. Mary’s Hall. This semester is every Thursday, through November 17th.

Family members who had a loved one buried from St. Peter Parish during the past year are invited to attend the 8:30 a.m. Mass on the

Feast of All Souls, Wednesday, November 2nd. A table will be set with a candle for each of the deceased, buried from St. Peter Parish last year. As each name of the beloved deceased is read, a candle will be lit in remembrance. Family members are invited to take their candle after Mass.

Remembrance Table Memorials Beginning with our All Saints Vigil Mass and continuing through the month of November, please consider a $25 donation toward the beautiful flowers placed on our Remembrance Table named in memory of a deceased loved one(s). Blessing of the Graves A Blessing of the Graves at Pine-crest Memorial Gardens in Cov-ington will take place on Tuesday, November 1st. Anyone who wishes to have their family’s resting place blessed may gather at the cemetery at 9:45 a.m. Blessing will take place at 10:00 a.m.

Did You Know???? A Plenary Indulgence can be granted on All Souls Day.

The faithful who visit a church or cemetery to pray for the faithful departed saying the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed, may gain a plenary indulgence once only under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, Eucha-ristic Communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions. Through prayer, this indulgence may be given over to the Holy Souls Enchiridion of Indulgences, revised edition, 1986, concession 67.

The three conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work; it is, however, fitting that Communion be received and the prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff be said on the same day the work is performed.

The condition of praying for the intention of the Sover-eign Pontiff is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary; nevertheless, each one is free to re-cite any other prayer according to his piety and devotion. St. Peter Parish Times for the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion are as follows:

Pro-Life Prayer and Fasting Commitment

A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer.” – Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae), n. 100.

The Pro-Life Ministry invites all parishioners to pray and fast for the unborn, for the end to abortion and euthanasia, and for our nation to become more and more pro-life each day. Each participant picks one "date" per month to pray and fast for these intentions. (For instance, if you pick the 22nd, then every month, on the 22nd of that month, you pray and fast for the pro-life cause.) An email reminder is sent twice a month to remind participants of their chosen dates. The First Friday and First Saturday Devotions to The Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

The First Friday of each month was designated by our Savior Himself as a day to be consecrated to honoring His Sacred Heart. Attendance at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is assuredly the best means of honoring and loving the adorable Heart of Jesus.

First Saturday Devotion … All are invited to join the Northshore Manresa Men’s Group on November 5th, for First Saturday Devotion with Confessions beginning 7:45 a.m., Rosary at 8:00 a.m. and Mass at 8:30 a.m. Our Blessed Mother asked at Fatima for the First Saturday Devotion, saying it is a way of atoning for sins in the world, and promising that she would help at the hour of death anyone who keeps the devotion for five consecutive First Saturdays.

Join us Monday, November 7th, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church for a Holy Hour of Adoration for Elections. The evening will begin with the Exposition of the Blessed Sac-rament, leading into our very own Kitty Cleveland singing the Divine Mercy

Chaplet. The evening will conclude with silent prayer and benediction.

Dear St. Peter Families,

This week, we recognized students for their growth in virtue and academic achievement in the 1st quarter. In remembering the examples of St. John Bosco, St. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta, we see examples of Christ’s mercy and love on Earth. Each day, we aim to teach and develop holy habits among our children for them to be more like the saints that have come before us.

Academically, our students have achieved so much this first quarter. Our honor roll students received a reminder through their grades that God has given them gifts to be developed. This is a call that all of our St. Peter students must continually answer by forming strong study habits and working hard to get the most out of God’s gifts.

No matter what report cards indicated and whether or not students met their personal goals, there is still much left to learn and accomplish this year. Congratulations to all of our honor roll and virtue award recipients for the 1st quarter. We are excited for a great second quarter.

Come and See Vocation Discernment Weekend for high school juniors and seniors, and college-age men will be held November 4-6, at St. Joseph Seminary College in Covington. This is an opportunity for men who are interested in the priesthood and who would like to find out more about seminary life.
