From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Capital Campaign: Terri and Sharon spoke at the Masses last weekend, encouraging and inspiring every-one to come onboard to complete the final phase of our re-pavement and beautification project. I was encour-aged by how well their message was received by every-one. Please do support this final phase of Capital Cam-paign through your generous donations. Here’s the up-date from Terri Ciardella: “Sharon & I spoke at the masses last weekend to summarize the progress of Phase 2 and introduce Phase 3, our FINAL Phase. We are al-most there and with everyone's help we will can finish the project. Remember all donations are tax deductible! “Thank you to the Spanish Ministry for sponsoring an-other festive dinner dance in support of the pavement project. It is heart-warming to see different parish or-ganizations come forward with ways to raise funds for this project. “We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to chair Sister Strikes Back: Late Nite Catechism 2. We have reserved this entertainingly funny show for a fundraising performance. Sharon and I are happy to help but we are unable to take the lead on coordinating the event due to our other campaign obligations. Please contact me at 650-588-1926 if you wish to discuss what this event en-tails. Thank you!”

Spanish Dinner-Dance: Last Saturday, the Spanish Ministry organized a dinner-dance to raise funds for our project to repave the property. I would like to thank eve-ryone involved in making it a success. Special mention needs to be made of Victor and Conchita Blanco and their energetic and generous team for spearheading this event. Like last year, they did a fine job of arranging this event. Next year too they want to do this event to help the ministries and projects of the parish. I am deeply grateful and joyful for their leadership in liturgical, so-cial, spiritual events in our parish. The Spanish ministry has become an integral part of our parish life. Thanks to a core group of people who put their time and talents at the service of the community, the ministry flourishes and thrives. Thanks be to God.

My Pilgrimage to the Holy Land (continued): Naza-reth: After visiting Tel Aviv, Caesarea, Mt. Carmel, and Haifa, we drove in the eastward direction to reach Naza-reth. We visited the Basilica of the Annunciation, where tradition holds that Angel Gabriel brought the news to Mary that she is to be the Mother of God. Mary’s re-sponse was: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to your word.” The basilica has lower and upper levels. The lower level has the holy grotto where it’s believed that the angel Gabriel met the

Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) with the annunciation mes-sage. The upper level is a more modern church with much mosaic art honoring the BVM. These mosaic art works have been donated by Catholic communities from all over the world. There is Church of St. Joseph nearby which is believed to have been built over St. Joseph’s workshop at Nazareth. In the center of the city is Mary’s Well, which is believed to have been the only source of water to the city at one time, most probably used by Mary and Jesus. We also visited the brow of the hill outside Nazareth from where some people wanted to throw Jesus down the hill because they were offended by his message. At Nazareth the Holy Family lived, Je-sus grew up here, Mary received the angel’s message here, Jesus worked in his father’s carpenter shop, Jesus learned to pray and play, here Jesus read from a scroll in the synagogue, here Jesus was rejected by his own peo-ple. I could unite my mind and heart with these spiritual realities and mysteries connected with Jesus our Lord. Nathaniel asked Phillip: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Our answer could well be: the Son of God came from Nazareth. He is our way, the truth, and the life. (to be continued)

Remember the Dear Departed: This month of Novem-ber is a special month to be close to those who have died from our lives. Here’s a poem to honor death and cele-brate life: “Death” by Rainer Maria Rilke: “Before us great Death stands/ Our fate held close within his quiet hands./ When with proud joy we lift Life’s red wine / To drink deep of the mystic shining cup /And ecstasy through all our being leaps— / Death bows his head and weeps.”

Think About It: “I long to find some solid ground, some firm foundation for my life.” “Look at it like this,” said the Master. “What is the solid ground of the bird migrating across continents? What is the firm foundation of the fish carried by the river to the sea?”

Fishing Jokes: Two men, fishing on Sunday morning, were feeling guilty. Said one, “I suppose we should have stayed home and gone to Church.” The other replied, “Heck, I couldn’t have gone to church anyway. My wife’s in bed with the flu.” A fellow quit going fishing on Sunday morning and be-gan going to church. St. Veronica’s Annual SENIOR HOLIDAY LUNCHEON, hosted by the St. Veronica Confirmation class, will be on Saturday,

December 6, 2014, at noon in Falcon Hall. All senior citizens are welcome to attend.

Reservations are requested so enough food can be prepared and can be made by calling the Pastoral

Reflecting on the Word

In keeping with the focus on the Last Judgment that prevails at the end of the Church year, St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that the “day of the Lord” - the day of Christ’s return - will come just when we least ex-pect it and are confidently predicting a new era of peace and security. And Matthew’s Gospel gives us a parable about a master who returns and expects a good return on the investments made by his servants. One of the paradoxes of the Christian life is that even though it is only through God’s grace that we are saved, God still holds us accountable for our actions. The “talents” that God puts into our hands are to be used by us, and those who make good use of them, like the woman in the first reading, are to be praised. Those who timidly hide their talents, like the servant in the Gospel parable, will lose that which they seek to preserve. We ought not let the fear of loss keep us from acting boldly for God’s cause. It is precisely because God’s grace and mercy are the source of our salvation that we can run the risk of using our talents without knowing for sure what the outcome will be. Grace liberates us and enables us to take a chance on living our lives wholly for God, so that when the day of the Lord comes we may welcome it with joy.

For Prayerful Consideration and Discussion: ♦ When has my faith led me to take a risk that I would

not otherwise have taken? ♦ If the final judgment of the world were to happen

tomorrow, would I be ready? What would I need to change in my life in order to be ready?

St. Veronica’s Eucharistic Adoration team always welcomes new adorers to sign up to spend one hour a week (or more, if desired) with the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration occurs in the St. Veronica side chapel from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, ex-cept parish holidays. Those who are interested are invited to call the par-ish office at 650-588-1455 to submit their name and phone number so a member of the Adoration team can contact them.

Thanksgiving Day Mass Kick-Off: The 9:00 a.m. Thanksgiving Day Mass will be our kick-off date for the annual SVdP Food Drive. We ask that you donate funds and non-perishable foods to support those in need within our parish boundaries.
