MISS BEHAVIOR HONES IN ON THE HOLIDAY

Dear Miss Behavior: Now that your column is being read in Albia, Iowa, Struthers, Ohio, and Canfield, Ohio, can you still use your old Thanksgiving column, or will you have to make some changes? Sincerely,

Hungry for Turkey Dear Hungry: I looked in my computer files and discovered that my earliest Thanksgiving column dates from 1997, which makes it a lot younger than the holiday itself. By the way, most of us learned that the first Thanksgiving took place in Massachusetts in 1621, when Pilgrims and Native Americans sat down together at table. New evidence suggests that the first Thanksgiving actually took place in 1565 in Florida, when Spanish soldiers, sailors, and the local Timucuan Indians first celebrated Mass, then sat down to a feast of oysters and clams brought by the Indians, and garbanzo beans, olive oil, bread, pork, and wine, provisions from the Spanish ships. Now for those perennial favorites, the Lackings and the Withits. Picture, if you will, two families. Let us call one the Lackings and the other the Withits. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lacking, the following scenario takes place each Thanksgiving. The women of the household spend the entire day wearing themselves out cleaning, cooking, serving dinner, and washing up. The men of the household spend the day watching football. Mr. and Mrs. Lacking have not bothered to cook a turkey for a local soup kitchen, nor have they made any contributions this season to homeless shelters, Catholic Charities, or any other organization providing food for the needy. When they sit down to dinner (at half-time), they forget to offer a prayer of thanks to the Lord of the harvest. They never invite anyone outside their small family circle, even though they know that their next-door neighbor is elderly and likely to be alone on Thanksgiving. Each year they eat and drink too much, quarrel with the children, and are generally out of sorts by the end of the day. It's a good thing they don't invite anyone else, because I prefer not to join them. On the other hand, picture the Withits. In the Withit household, everyone, including the children, helps to get the house ready, prepare and serve dinner, and tidy up when the celebration is over. On the day before Thanksgiving, the Withits prepare a turkey for a soup kitchen. They joyfully contribute to homeless shelters, to Catholic Charities, and to other worthy groups that feed the poor and hungry. The Withits always invite one or two people who otherwise would be eating alone on the holiday. Before the first course, they offer a heartfelt prayer of thanks to God. After dinner, the adults play games with the children. Some of the Withits do watch football (no one is perfect), but they do not let those games take precedence over the family celebration. I am hoping for an invitation from the Withits. Do you know where I can find them? Sincerely,

Miss Behavior

Saint of the Week Saint Cecilia

November 22 marks the feast of Saint Cecilia, patron of music and musicians. Tradition tells us that Cecilia was a devout Christian, married to Valerian against her will. It is said that while secular music was playing for her wedding, Cecilia heard and sang in her heart a hymn to Christ. She persuaded her husband to become a Christian; he and his brother Tiburtius were martyred for the faith, as was Cecilia. When did this happen? Perhaps in the second century, or perhaps in the fourth. The church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome was built on the site believed to be her home. Originally constructed in the fifth century, it was rebuilt by Pope Paschal I circa 820 A.D. and refashioned one more time in 1599. In the Middle Ages her burial place was said to be on the Appian Way next to the crypt of the third-century popes, but in the nineteenth century Giovanni Battista de Rossi, an archeologist, concluded that her grave was in the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, also along the Appian Way. Visitors to these catacombs may today view the crypt of St. Cecilia with its mosaics and paintings and a statue of the saint, a copy of a sculpture carved by Stefano Maderno in 1599. Because tradition says that she praised God with her voice as well as with musical instruments, Saint Cecilia became the patron saint of music and musicians from the fourteenth century on. She has been depicted in numerous works of art—paintings, altarpieces, sculptures—including The Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia by Raphael. During the Renaissance, first in France and later in England, poets and composers competed for prizes as part of the celebration of St. Cecilia’s feast day. Among the best-known poems in honor of Cecilia are “Alexander’s Feast” and the “Ode to St. Cecilia” by John Dryden; both were set to music by the great George Frideric Handel. Let us conclude with John Dryden’s praise of Cecilia and the legend that she, in fact, invented the organ: Orpheus could lead the savage race, And trees uprooted left their place Sequacious of the lyre: But bright Cecilia raised the wonder higher: When to her Organ vocal breath was given An Angel heard, and straight appeared – Mistaking Earth for Heaven.
