He reminde d me that I had re ad a p oem t o h im onc e and w anted me to rec ite

it. He cued me with a few wo rds of it and I recalled having read to him some

poems of Juan Ramon Jimenez. T he particular one he had in mind w as entitled

El V iaje Def initivo (The Definit ive Journe y). I rec ited it.

and I w ill leave. But the birds will stay, singing:

and my garden will stay, with its green tree,

with its wate r well.

Many afternoons the skies will be blue and placid,

and the bells in the belfry will chime,

as they are chiming this very afternoon.

The people who have loved me will pass away,

and the tow n w ill burst anew every year.

But my spirit w ill always wander nostalgic

in the same recondite corner of my flowe ry garden.

That is the fee ling Genaro is talking about , don Juan said. In o rder to be a

sorcerer a man must be passionate. A passionate man has earthly belongings

and things dear to him -if nothing else, just t he path whe re he w alks.

the challenge of coming to terms with t he compromising of t he natural world.

Pretty big deal, the connection to ones planet threatened by the acts of the

ignorant. Perhaps all one can do is take the next ( but no t t he last) ste p: let it

go and look for the beauty t hat remains.

Call it indulgence, but I find comfort in knowing that most the garden (and the

path) are still there.
