THIS WEEK:

THIS Saturday, 20 August 2016, SGVR Membership Breakfast Meeting

Socialize with your Porsche Friends at 9:00 AM at Coco’s on Colorado Blvd. in Arcadia (page 4)—and

hear about the upcoming tours and Quarterly Dinner.

Monterey Classic Car Week

It’s here! Classic Car Week is in progress: the first big event, Concours on the Avenue, is today. See

pages 7 & 19 for more.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re staying home this year but it’s time to plan for 2017. It’s best

to get hotel reservations by January.

Sure, it’s expensive—the hotels noticed the all-Ferrari traffic jams and they set their rates accordingly.

But, if Monterey’s hotels didn’t make big bucks when the crowds come there’d be a lot fewer hotels and

you couldn’t get a room at all. You’d be hard pressed to find a week-long cruise for the price of Classic

Car Week and you wouldn’t have all the rare, beautiful cars in the world just hoping you’d come and

look at them.

The really high hotel rates are just for the weekend of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance so it

doesn’t cost all that much more to stay for the whole week.

Someday Soon:

NEXT Saturday, 27 August 2016 SGVR Mulholland Highway Tour (pages 4 & 31)

Assemble at 10:00 AM at Gelson’s, 22277 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas, CA 91302.

Saturday, 10 September 2016, Big Bear-Oak Glen Tour (pages 5 & 32)

Cover some of the most scenic roads in Southern California:

Rt 18—Rim of the World Highway

Lunch in Big Bear Lake

Rt 38 through woods and mountains down to Yucaipa

Finish at the orchards of Oak Glen for fresh-picked apples and real apple cider

All Marque Events

15-17 September 2016, Lone Star le Mans, Austin, Texas

The Lone Star le Mans offers fans the opportunity to experience two premier sports car series for the

only joint event on each of their schedules: the global FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and

the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. It’s the Porsche 919’s only race in the

USA. Porsche Corral tickets are available until 12 September 2016.

17-18 September 2016, Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival

Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival is Fleet Week San Diego’s marquee event. The event features fast-

paced, thrilling auto racing and exhibitions for car enthusiasts of all ages at one of the most distinctive

race track locations — Naval Air Station North Island, the birthplace of Naval Aviation. Nowhere else can

you see a variety of cars racing on a live runway used by the U.S. Navy.

This is the only Navy Open House on the West Coast. Naval Base Coronado is home to over 20,000 active

duty military and over 4,000 civilian employees. The general public usually only gets a glimpse of the

daily activities happening at the base.

Restrictions

Review the website before going; some things are prohibited on NAS North Island. In fact, virtually

everything is prohibited.

21-23 October 2016, Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, Austin, Texas

Taylor Swift has generously allowed a Formula 1 Grand Prix to share her concert venue. She’ll perform a

full concert after the end of track activity on Saturday, October 22. The concert will be entirely general

admission, much like a music festival and all holders of a Saturday ticket for USGP weekend (including

the 3-day GA wristband) will have access to the concert.

At least one member of San Gabriel Valley Region plans to be there.

15-23 October 2016, Cuba’s Classic Cars with Brenda Priddy

Visit Cuba with acclaimed car spy photographer Brenda Priddy; it’s $ 4,185 double occupancy. A $1,000

Eating Suggestions

If you make it to Canepa’s open house, consider Phil's Fish Market & Eatery in Moss Landing.

The Paris Bakery Café in Monterey is a tasty, although perhaps not exceptionally healthy, way to start

the day.

Zone 8 has announced the tentative dates for the 2017 California Festival of Speed on Facebook:

Please mark your calendars now with our tentative dates for the 2017 California Festival of

Speed at the Auto Club Speedway for April 21 -23rd. Two weeks AFTER Long Beach Grand Prix.

A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100 Million Volkswagens

From Wired, 10 August 2016:

A team of researchers from the University of Birmingham and the German engineering firm Kasper &

Oswald plan to reveal two distinct vulnerabilities they say affect the keyless entry systems of an

estimated nearly 100 million cars. One of the attacks would allow resourceful thieves to wirelessly

unlock practically every vehicle the Volkswagen group has sold for the last two decades, including makes

like Audi and Skoda.

San Gabriel Valley Region, PCA

Big Bear-Oak Glen Tour Saturday, 10 September 2016

We’ll leave San Dimas near the eastern edge of our region and

head to scenic Rt 18—Rim of the World Highway for the climb up to

lunch (or a late breakfast) in Big Bear Lake. After lunch we’ll take

one of Southern California’s best—and least known—scenic drives:

Rt 38 through woods and mountains down to Yucaipa.

At the end of the drive we can visit the orchards of Oak Glen for fresh-picked apples and real apple cider.

Oak Glen is a great place for kids!

Big Bear-Oak Glen Driving Notes

Assemble at The Coffee Klatch

There are lots of gas stations very nearby—come a little early and fill up if you’ll need gas. Enjoy some food and award-

winning coffee before the driver’s meeting.

From The South (10, 60, 57 Freeways)

1. Take the 57 North

2. Take the Arrow Highway Exit

(3rd exit North of the 10)

3. Turn Left onto Arrow Highway

4. Drive under the 57 Freeway

5. Turn left into the Target Shopping Center parking

lot (1st light after the underpass)

6. Park in the North end of the lot near Arrow Highway

From the North (210 Freeway)

1. Take the 57 South

2. Take the 1st exit: Arrow Highway

3. At the light, cross Arrow Highway into the Target

Shopping Center parking lot

4. Park in the North end of the lot near Arrow Highway

Freeway Transit

We’ll hop on the 57 northbound then the 210 eastbound. We’ll keep speeds low till we’re a little way down the 210 so

everybody can form up, then we’ll resume normal freeway speeds to Rt 18-Waterman Avenue.

Wildwood Park

Wildwood Park isn’t the pride of San Bernardino, and San Bernardino isn’t the pride of Southern California but it’s in the

perfect spot to regroup and put the Targa and Convertible tops down.

The Pines Lakefront

The Pines Lakefront is right on the lake looking over a marina. They serve breakfast from 9:00 AM to noon.

Onyx Summit

At 8,443 ft. it’s the highest highway pass in Southern California.

Oak Glen

Oak Glen oakglen.net has seven orchards and three [petting] zoos. The products aren’t what you see at Von’s—the

apples are small and don’t have a freshly waxed shine but there are a lot of varieties and they do taste like they were

picked that morning (they probably were). The cider is really cider!

Getting Home

The tour officially ends at Oak Glen. The easy way to get home is to follow Oak Glen Blvd. all the way around and down

the hill. Turn right (West) at Cherry Valley Blvd. There’s a traffic light and a Shell station and a sign pointing to the 10

freeway.
