1.2 Optical Interface Connectors The optical interface connectors used in the Sprint Ericsson installation are LC (Lucent Connector), H&S ODC plug and H&S ODC socket connectors. These are shown from left to right in Figure 2 (LC in duplex configuration, ODC Plug, ODC Socket).

Figure 2 1.3 General Handling of Optical Fiber When handling optical cables, consider the following:

1. Optical cables are sensitive to mechanical stress, sharp bends, kinks, dust, and dirt. They are not, however, sensitive to electrical interference

2. Make sure not to apply excessive force to the cable 3. Never over-bend the cable. (Refer to the SNV RRU Fiber Cable Installation Guide

Rev 4252012[1] for minimum bend radius for MLE Tower Cable and Ericsson RRU jumper cable)

1.6 Training & Certification Technicians tasked with installing, cleaning and inspecting fiber optic sites are required to be certified by the inspection and test equipment manufacturer in the proper use of the inspection and test equipment.

1.7 Inspection & Cleaning

It is imperative that all optical connectors including the connectors to be tested and test equipment connectors be cleaned and inspected to the standards set forth in this document. This provides reliable optical connections and prevents damage or contamination of the connectors.

Technician inspection and cleaning certification shall be made available upon request or provided with close out documentation.

Section 2 – Fiber Optic End Face Inspection and Cleaning Procedures

Introduction

The purpose of this section is to outline fiber optic connector inspection techniques and industry standard cleaning procedures to ensure proper connector endface quality prior to testing installed systems. WARNING: When working with fiber optic cables always assume the fiber is live. Invisible laser radiation can cause irreversible injury to the human eye. Never look into the end of an exposed fiber optic cable, bulkhead, or optical light source. The use of non-direct viewing devices such as the VIS 300 Video Inspection Scope is highly recommended.

As per document IEC - 61300-3-35 Ed 1.0 the following inspection and cleaning procedure should be used before installing or testing any fiber optic jumper or trunk cable. Only use approved test sets, inspection equipment, and cleaning supplies. Any moveable debris on a fiber optic connector end face is not allowed. After 3 dry cleaning attempts to remove debris a “wet/dry” cleaning process is suggested. 2.1 Use the following ODM grading overlay template (shown in Figure 4) in conjunction with the Zone grading criteria table (shown in Figure 5) to determine acceptability of the fiber end face.

Figure 4

2um, 5um, and 10um diameter obstructions are provided in the outer most area of the zone grading overlay. The circle defining the limit of the contact zone has a 3um line width. Zones are accurately determined by placing the grading template on top of the VIS300 display and aligning the cladding zone with the cladding on the display. If obstructions and/or scratches are visible in the critical, cladding, adhesive, or contact zone you can place each sized reference obstruction over the obstruction in question to determine acceptability according to the table below. The 3um contact zone limit circle line width can be placed on top of any scratches to determine scratch width acceptance according to the table below in figure 5.

Figure 5

Single-Mode Criteria Table

Zone Description Diameter Allowable Defects (Diameter)

Allowable Scratches (Width)

A Critical Zone 25um None visible at 200X None visible at 200x

B Cladding Zone 25 to 120um Any less than 2um 5 from 2 - 5um None > 10um

None greater than 3um

C Adhesive Zone 120 to 130um None > 10um Any scratch OK

D Contact Zone 130 to 250um None > 10um Any Scratch OK

First Inspection 2.2 Inspect the fiber optic cable end face using the VIS300 with probe and LC adapter tip. In

Figure 9 an LC fiber optic end face is being inspected. Please note that the Sprint - Ericsson design incorporates the use of a Hybrid Fiber/Power cable system. This trunk and optical jumper cable system incorporates the use of the ODC 2 fiber optic connector shown in Figure 10, 11 and 12. Figure 11 and 12 also show the VIS300 ODC adapters and the VIS 300 inspection probe inserted into the ODC socket and plug assemblies.

Section 6 Technical Support and FAQ 6.1 For technical support on any of the procedures, guidelines contained within this guide or if you have general questions regarding the fiber portion of this project please call 603- 524-8350. After normal business hours please email to [email protected]. 6.2 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between dBm and dB? o dBm is an absolute optical power measurement referenced to one

milliwatt of optical energy. It is the starting measurement of the dB loss measurements.

Why do I get a negative dB reading? o This reading is often the result of the calibration cables not being as clean

and aligned as the cable under measurement. This “negative reading is common while measuring very short distance cables (less than 100 feet). Always keep reference patch cables clean and free from contamination. Negative readings greater than -.5dB are indicative of other problems in the measurement. In this case give our tech support group a call at 603-524-8350

Will my reading be saved in the RP 460 memory while the battery is changed? o Yes the RP 460 will retain measurements in a non-volatile memory

Why do I need to inspect all fiber connections o Short distance fiber systems that fail are typically the result of dirty or

contaminated connector ends. Over 90 % of all failures are attributed to endface debris. The use of a Video Inspection Scope ensures a quality connected fiber system.
