Starr ing But te rf l i e s Lap Quilt 58" x 79"

Please read all instructions before you begin. Fabric widths are assumed to be a minimum of 42". All seams are 1/4" and all strips are cut from selvage to selvage unless other wise instructed. Finished sizes are approximate because of variations in seams and shrinkage from the quilting process. Press strip sets and finished components gently so as not to distort the pieces.

Overview Six fabrics from the Butterfly Forest collection have been used in this quilt. The fabric colors/numbers listed below are for both the black and the blue colorways. Select the coloring for the quilt you would like to make and for reference, cut a swatch from each fabric, staple it to a piece of paper and label it appropriately 1 to 6. Black

Supplies: Half-rectangle ruler such as Nifty Notion’s Half Rectangle, Creative Grid’s Perfect Rectangle, or the Recs triangle out of TriRecs Tools.

Cutting

Fabric 1 Cut 2 - 10 1/2" wide strips; subcut (7) 10 1/2" squares

Fabric 2 Cut 2 - 5 1/2" wide strips; subcut (8) 5 1/2" squares

2

Fabric 3 Cut 4 - 5 1/2" strips

Fabric 4 Cut 2 - 8 3/8" wide strips; subcut (6) 8 3/8" squares, then cut each square diagonally

in half twice for setting triangles, subcut (2) 4 1/2" squares, then cut each diagonally in half once for corner triangles

Cut 4 -5 1/2" strips Cut 6 - 3 1/2" wide strips, for inner border

Fabric 5 Layout the stripe fabric. The Butterfly Forest stripe begins with a narrow black line and then the leafy garland along one selvage. The opposite selvage begins with a narrow black line and then the dark and light stained glass stripe. Mark all four identical borders before cutting. Begin with the selvage next to the garland and mark the first border ¼” outside the first narrow black line toward the selvage. Then measure 9" across the stripe and mark the opposite edge of the border. This mark will be about 3/8” into the light stained glass wings. Slide over about 1 3/4” and mark the second border in exactly the same parts of the stripe to match the first. Continue across the stripe until you have marked where to cut all four identical borders. As long as the borders match, your cuts can vary from what is described. See diagram below.

Construction

1. Layer a 5 1/2" wide Fabric 3 strip on top of a 5 1/2" wide Fabric 4 strip with right sides of both strips UP. Make a second layer. Lay the half rectangle ruler with the 5 1/2” line even with the bottom of the strips. Cut along both sides of the triangle including the notch. The notch will help with alignment when piecing them together. Rotate the ruler and place the 5 1/2” line along the top edge of the strips. Align the diagonal edge of the ruler with the cut edge of the fabric. Cut along the side of the ruler and the notch. Cut 32 sets of triangles. (Diagram 1). Keep these sets of triangles together. Make 2 more layers using the remaining 5 1/2" wide Fabric 3 strips and 5 1/2" wide Fabric 4 strips, this time with both strips in each layer wrong sides UP. Cut 32 sets of triangles. Stack these sets in a separate pile.

2. Piece the triangles in each set together in pairs to make 3" x 5 1/2" half-rectangle units (Diagram 2). Make 32 of each set. Press the seams in one set away Fabric 3 and press the seams in the other set toward Fabric 3.

3. Side units. Sew a half-rectangle unit from each set together in pairs to make (32) 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" side units. Press seams open (Diagram 3). Set aside 16 units.

4. Side sections. Sew the remaining 16 side units together as shown in Diagram 4 to make 8 side sections. Diagram 4 5. Quilt Center. Following the Quilt Center Diagram and noting placement, sew the Fabric 4 setting triangles, side units made in step 3, side sections made in step 4, Fabric 1 squares and Fabric 2 squares together into 9 diagonal rows. Press row seams in opposing directions, then sew the rows together. Sew a Fabric 4 corner triangle to each corner. The quilt top should measure 36 1/4” x 57 1/2”.

6. Inner border. Sew the 3 1/2" wide Fabric 4 strips into one long section. The seams will show less if you piece them diagonally. Note: Measure your quilt vertically through the center. If your measurements differ from the lengths given, adjust your strip lengths accordingly. Cut (2) 57 1/2" lengths. Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt center. Measure the quilt horizontally through the center including the side borders. Cut (2) 42 3/4” and sew these to the top and bottom of the top. Alter these lengths if your measurements differ.

7. Outer border. With raw edges aligned, center and pin the long, lighter edge of the 9" x 90" Fabric 5 strips right sides together to each long side of the quilt center. Stitch, beginning and ending 1/4" away from each corner, backstitching at each end. Repeat on the top and bottom using the 70" long Fabric 5 strips. (The strips will extend beyond the quilt top at each corner.)

8. Place one corner of the quilt on the ironing board right side up. Position the quilt with the vertical border overlapping the horizontal border.

9. Fold the vertical border under at a 45º angle. Adjust it until it lays exactly on top of the horizontal border, matching the stripe, and the angle is an exact diagonal from the corner of the quilt to the corner of the border.

10. Press a crease into the fold with the iron. Carefully lift up the vertical border, keeping the miter in place, and pin through the creases (along the creased stitching line) from the corner of the quilt to the outside corner of the border. Open the fabric and be sure that the stripe matches. Lay a square ruler on the corner and check that the corner is square.

11. Reposition the pins perpendicular to the crease and stitch along the crease, backstitching at each end. Check once again to see that the miter is accurate, then trim the seam allowance to 1/4". Press seam open.

Quilting (Take these as suggestions only and then do your own thing.)

1. Outline the butterflies in the large blocks and stitch in the ditch around the block. 2. Stitch in the ditch around the points of the stars and the center square in the star. Stitch a

motif in that square. 3. Quilt an all over pattern in all of the background areas. 4. Outline along the inside edge of the stripe (next to the background) and along the dark

stained glass line in the stripe. Outline the leaves in the stripe – not too detailed.

Binding 1. Sew the 7 Fabric 6 binding strips diagonally together to make one long strip. Press the strip

lengthwise in half wrong sides together.

2. Align the raw edges of the folded binding with the edge of the quilt top. Leave an 8" tail and stitch, using a 3/8" seam allowance all the way around, mitering the corners and stopping 8" from the starting point. Use your favorite method to join the ends and finish binding.

3. Bring the folded edge of the binding to the back of the quilt and stitch it in place with a blind hemstitch.
