  • What about light? If light is a wave, then light should show Doppler effects too!
  • Slide 15
  • The spectral lines in light from distant galaxies were shifted towards the red end of the spectrum. 1923 Edwin Hubble concluded that this shift was caused by the Doppler Effect which indicated that distant galaxies are moving away from the earth at high speeds. The farther away the galaxy, the higher its speed. Redshift of spectral lines in the supercluster of distant galaxies (right), as compared with that of the Sun (left). Wavelength increases up towards the red and beyond (frequency decreases).

  • But not just light . - all electromagnetic radiation Doppler shifts! Doppler Radar - traffic tickets and weather watching
  • Slide 17
  • So is there a Sound Barrier equivalent for light? What happenswhen an objecttravelling near thespeed of light, then turns on itsheadlights?
