Honor Your Father On His Special Day Father’s Day is June 17

Father’s Day started with a dedicated woman: Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of a widowed Civil War veteran who had raised her on her own. Dodd came up with the idea for a special day celebrating fathers when listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. She held her own special tribute for her father on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, and began a campaign for an official celebration thereafter.

The idea of Father’s Day initially met with some skepticism, but in 1919, President Calvin Coolidge expressed support for the holiday, and in 1926 a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City. In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, but it wasn’t Until 1972 that President Richard Nixon officially recognized it as a national holiday.

SHOULD I KEEP OR SHOULD I BUY? Often we are asked by customers if they should repair and keep their car or buy a different one. When

deciding whether to replace your vehicle, consider money, value, time, what maintenance and repair you’ve done in recent years, and if you like the car.

The next step is to decide if you are going to buy new or preowned. Keep in mind that most vehicles depreciate about 20% as soon as they are driven off the lot, and continue to depreciate rapidly for a few years and miles. Another important fact to keep in mind is the cost of insurance and tax; these added expenses could easily amount to a couple years of maintenance and repair.

Depending on age and millage, a preowned vehicle could have been someone else’s headache. Vehicles older than 5 years and have more than 60,000 miles usually fit this profile as they are getting to the stage requiring more maintenance, and the beginning of the repair stage. We believe that the best value when considering buying a car is a roughly 2 year old car with roughly 20,000 mile.

Over the years we have come to a conclusion that most cases you are better off keeping, maintaining, and repairing the car you have, as it is already depreciated and you know its history. Generally a year’s worth of maintenance and repair is equivalent to 2 monthly car payments in the same period of time.

If you choose to buy a pre-owned vehicle, I would like to encourage you to bring it in for a pre-purchase ‘Buyer’s Inspection’.

$75.00 Buyers Inspection (Save $25) Let our technicians inspect the vehicle you want to buy before you buy it. We’ll make sure you don’t get a lemon. We work for you, not the seller.

Jolene’s Corner

Biscotti is a two-step bake method. The process is not difficult at all to make and the results are better than

anything you can buy in the store or at a coffee stand. Now I do not like the taste of coffee however biscotti is good

with tea and hot chocolate.

Almond Biscotti 2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/8 teaspoon salt

3 large eggs

2 Tablespoon Amaretto (or 2 Tablespoon rum and ½ teaspoon almond extract)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup almonds, chopped a few times. Leave them chunky

Directions:

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper

Combine dry ingredients and set aside.

Whisk the eggs , amaretto, and vanilla (or rum and extract) in a mixer.

Add the dry ingredients and mix until combined.

Dough should be thick and sticky at this point, do not worry and DO NOT add more flour.

Scrape the dough out onto a parchment lined sheet pan

Flour your hands and shape into a long flat loaf about 10 inches long and 5 inches wide

This will be kind of messy, so don’t worry about how neat it is. Just try to get the shape.

Bake until firm and dry, about 50 minutes.

Remove from the oven and cool 10 minutes.

Use a long serrated knife and slice into ½ in wide slices.

Lay the slices cut side down on the baking sheet and bake another 20 minutes.

Cool the biscotti on a rack, cool completely before storing.

IT WAS ACUTE INTRODUCTION

Discomfort, Pain and Pain Relief This year I turn 65 years of age. I have finally reached senior and Medicare status. Likely similar to

many of you, I experience some pain. I take this as just a fact of life experienced with growing older along with my unique medical / health circumstances.

I visit my physician annually for a physical and six months later for a mid-year follow up. I’ve been doing this for many years. I have full confidence in my primary physician. However, trying to determine solutions for pain in the traditional medical system does have limitations inherent in that system.

In November 2017 I woke up in the middle of the night with vertigo. This had never happened before. I also experienced tinnitus and a feeling of blockage (plugged) in my right ear. My hearing in this ear was adversely affected. I visited my primary physician; he could find nothing out of the ordinary. The symptoms dissipated over the next few days, however, that feeling of blockage continued and my hearing continued to be affected. I didn’t think much about it and continued to live my life.

In January 2018 my wife Jolene and I went on a trip to Cuba which included some scuba diving. On the third day of diving, just prior to the second dive of the day, vertigo hit me once again while on the dive boat. It took almost 6 hours for me to recover. Needless to say, I discontinued diving on this trip.

Returning to the states I conferred with my primary physician and was referred to an ENT specialist. I continued to have this blockage in my right ear and difficulty hearing. Upon tests and review of my symptoms, this specialist suggested that I possibly have Meniere’s Disease (I had already considered this possibility as a result of my own research). Meniere’s Disease has no known cure.

On March 16 Jolene and I went to a concert in Medford. About 1 hour into the concert, vertigo hit me again. Not very comfortable. This is not something I want to live with for the rest of my life.

Jolene suggested I try an alternative therapy described as BOWENWORK. I was skeptical.

Jolene is experiencing pain due to a nervous system disease identified as Polymyalgia Rheumatica. She experiences severe pain in her back and pain associated with her sciatic nerve. She has been seeing Kathleen Siegel LMT with New Leaf Pain Relief in Grants Pass with positive results. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I made an appointment to see Kathleen in March. BOWENWORK therapy is performed in these sessions; Kathleen recommended an initial three sessions, which I agreed to.

BOWENWORK is difficult to describe. This therapy is nothing like anything I have ever experienced. During the initial three sessions I have experienced healing. During my second session, that feeling of blockage (plugged ear) ceased in my right ear. Simply amazing! If I had not experienced this for myself I would not have believed the results!

Now, I do not claim to understand BOWENWORK or what Kathleen does. I lay down on a massage table, and Kathleen does something - but it is not traditional massage. She puts gentle pressure on specific parts of my body which results in improvement to my physical condition. I have asked her to help me with a neuropathy issue in my feet. It has only been one session so far, however I do feel some improvement and reduction in pain.

I’m not sure I understand it all, but I am satisfied with the results of her BOWENWORK therapy and plan on continuing this therapy with the hopes of eliminating or reducing my issues with my right ear, tinnitus and foot neuropathy. I have already experienced relief with my right ear and improved hearing!

I am confident I will continue to experience improvement in my quality of life.

So … if you are experiencing pain and your present solution is unsatisfactory, perhaps Kathleen Siegel and BOWENWORK therapy can help you! Should you choose to try, please mention that you learned of her from STAR Automotive, Jim and Jolene Lefeber. Kathleen offers a referral discount and we would certainly appreciate you mentioning our referral.

Thank you and Feel Better! Jim Lefeber
