The dictionary definition of a community is, honestly, rather boring: “a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage; a locality inhabited by such a group.”
Technically, the meaning is right, but it falls short of accurately describing Carbondale, Illinois, and this city is anything but boring. Our community is more than a place where we share common leadership, streets and weather. Carbondale is an exciting, vibrant city where we celebrate diversity and progress; treasure the past and create the
future. It is a place where we enjoy metropolitan amenities and conveniences while cherishing the classic friendliness and charm of Southern Illinois.
Simply, this is where we live, work, learn, express ourselves, play and relax. This is Carbondale.

10. “location, location, location.” There are advantages to being 20 miles from an interstate. We miss out on the crime, noise, and air pollution of interstate traffic.
9. responsible business owners that keep the area around their businesses clean. a big “Thank you” to everyone that help to keep Carbondale clean and welcoming.
8. “sitting on the Wall” downtown at the dairy Queen with a peanut buster parfait.
7. saluki softball and volleyball. besides the teamwork, it’s great to watch a saluki team and wonder, “Who isn’t going to get a 4.0 gpa?”
6. The diversity of music and arts. as i said did during my mayoral campaign, “We are the Cultural Capital of southern illinois.”
5. The diversity of food and drink. most of our restaurants are locally owned which adds to the uniqueness of Carbondale.
4. The diversity of the Carbondale’s residents. you would need to attend a united nations meeting to find a more diverse population.
3. The community organizations and their volunteers that make them successful. so, get out and volunteer with a group like the boys & girls Club, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, or the i Can read program.
2. The city staff. i love going to the City’s offices and working with the professionally trained staff that work to make Carbondale a better place to live, visit and play.
1. The water. The number one reason why i moved here was for the quality of Carbondale’s water. The motto at Carbondale’s water treatment operations is, “Quality is Job #1.”
This is The CarbondaleChamber of CommerCe
The Carbondale Chamber serves the area as a strong non-profit professional organization whose mission is to advance
the interests of business and promote Carbondale as a great place to live, work, visit, play and invest.
The benefits and opportunities are abundant within the Carbondale Chamber. You never know when you or a business will need help, advice or support in some manner. When you’re a Chamber member, you have nearly 400 members ready, willing and able to step forward for you. Chamber members are people and firms who believe in taking action rather than sitting on the bench. They share the understanding that being a member is an investment not only for their business, but also in the quality of life for the entire region. The Chamber is a credible source of information for residents, visitors, people relocating to the area, and new and existing
businesses. Your membership identifies your business as a reputable one with a vested interest in the business community.
The Chamber is able to tackle a variety of different tasks thanks to its wide array of dedicated committees. The Ambassador’s Committee strives to promote member participation, support the mission of recruiting and retaining Chamber membership, planning, implementing and participating in fundraising events, planning and hosting the Chamber annual meetings, and planning and facilitating ribbon cuttings, grand opening ceremonies, and after hour events for member businesses.
The Saluki Pride Committee is the Chamber’s group that partners with Southern Illinois University in recruitment and retention efforts. The committee participates in activities such as SIUC open houses, Saluki Athletics, and International Student Events. This committee is also
responsible for the “dawg paws” seen on streets and in driveways across town and for the new Saluki Stay Scholarship that assists with retaining students in their junior or senior year.
The Government Affairs Committee discusses and researches pertinent state, local and national issues to help the Chamber best represent views and opinions that are of interest to its membership. This committee suggests surveys the Chamber can send to its membership on matters at the state, local and federal levels. During election years, the committee sponsors discussions with candidates on pertinent matters.
The Economic Development Committee is responsible for discussing ways the business community can partner with government officials and other organizations to bolster factors that play a role in increasing economic development in Carbondale. Looking at processes, brainstorming ideas,
“The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce provides an effective voice representing businesses on important issues affecting the Carbondale community.”
Jeff Doherty, Executive Director, Jackson Growth Alliance
4 C a r b o n d a l e C h a m b e r . C o m
partnering to advocate for transportation projects and extending resources for existing and potential business is among this committee’s tasks.
Leadership Carbondale is designed to develop effective leaders by enhancing their civic, social and professional skills to positively impact the community. Participants attend monthly, day-long sessions at various locations in the Carbondale area. Sessions include unique topics ranging from the history, healthcare and government of Carbondale to economic development, law enforcement and tourism.
As Executive Director for the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, I will personally assure you that the chamber staff and I are working diligently to continue to provide a rewarding experience and
to reach goals of excellence in order to strengthen our business community.
Please accept this as my formal invitation to join the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce. The staff and I look forward to meeting you and learning more about your business. If you have any questions, please contact us at 618.549.2146 or email [email protected].

This is Where We
live
Whether life-long residents or those who choose our community as a place
to study, work, start a new venture or retire, Carbondale offers something for everyone. From historic homes in quaint neighborhoods to exclusive, private communities, modern apartments to modest family homes, our residents live in safe and affordable neighborhoods, all close to the best shopping, schools,
recreational facilities, dining and healthcare in the region.
We take pride in the protection and services offered by our municipal government as well as our fire and police departments, both recognized nationally for their professionalism, acumen and protection of our city and its citizens.
Like those who serve us, we know and care for one another. We work side-by-side to serve
each other, our community and our world. We raise our families here and we welcome newcomers every day. Regardless if we are children, college seniors, senior citizens or someone in-between, we still come together in Carbondale.
“I am proud to call Carbondale home because it has a lot to offer diverse populations” explains Greg Scott, who like many others came to Carbondale as a college

for many in Carbondale, spiritual wellness is a priority, and our community is blessed with
a vast array of vibrant houses of worship. Churches, fellowships, temples and mosques can be found across the community, appealing to a variety of faiths and worship styles.
Many of University students take advantage of campus ministry programs offered by religious organizations as well as congregations from the community. People of all faiths often work together through the Interfaith Council, for

Locally-owned companies thrive right next to successful national corporations. With specialized resources and incentives available for new and existing businesses, entrepreneurs discover Carbondale to be a fertile place to launch and grow a business.

While our biggest employment sectors are education and health care (thanks to being the home of both Southern Illinois University and Southern Illinois Healthcare), hundreds of us work in manufacturing, retail, hospitality, government and construction. Carbondale has long been known as a leader in education. We’re proud to be home of Southern Illinois University, one
of the nation’s top research universities. But there’s more to learning in Carbondale than just SIU. Our local community college, John A. Logan College, is a leader among two-year institutions in the Midwest enrolling students from more than 400 high schools in Illinois, and offering more than 150 degrees and certifications that students can choose from when deciding on a major. Both the Carbondale Community High School District and the local elementary school districts feature state-of-the-
art facilities, complementing the passionate and dedicated instructors who use the latest in educational theory and techniques to motivate, inspire and educate our young people.
“Sometimes I’ve taken for granted all that I gained as a student here. I’m beginning to realize the super education I’ve received in Carbondale,” says Jennipher Skiersch, who graduated from CCHS in 2010. “Now as a junior in elementary education at SIU, I’m continuing to get a great education in my hometown.”
Educational opportunities for children include private religious and independent schools, a variety of quality childcare and afterschool
program and a dynamic Boys and Girls Club. Lessons for children and adults abound in subjects ranging from archery to zoomba, art to architecture and history to horticulture. Public workshops, private instruction and community outreach events all give opportunities to expand horizons and engage in life-long learning. We value that here.

Four public school systems serve Carbondale and the immediate surrounding area. Carbondale Elementary School District 95 takes students from the majority of the city limits. The Giant City District and the Unity Point District serve students from the southern edges of the city, as well as areas south of Carbondale. Students from those three elementary and middle school districts all move on to attend Carbondale Community High School.

perhaps no institution plays as significant a role in Carbondale as Southern Illinois University. We’re proud of SIU and
why not? Southern Illinois University ranks in the top five percent research universities in the nation, with projects and discoveries that impact not only the region, but the entire world. With nearly 20,000 undergraduate students and more than 200,000 alumni worldwide, the University (and the city) makes a difference every day.
Plus, there are the Salukis, who compete at the highest level of the collegiate athletics. Named after an ancient breed of Egyptian hunting dog (tradition and local lore often refers to
our area as “Egypt”) known for its speed and agility, the Salukis can often be found battling for conference, regional and even national championships.
SIU students excel in other places, too. The debate and aviation squads are perennial national champions. Our students earn scholarships, accolades and honors. In fact, this year, three SIU students are among just 60 nationwide named to the annual USA Today All-USA College Academic Team.
See why we are so proud of SIU?

some might say that any place is only as good as its shopping. If that’s the case, Carbondale leads the pack with shops and stores of all
sizes and types. Whether it’s national retailers or smaller specialty shops, residents and visitors can find everything they’re looking for (and more).
Shopping areas such as University Mall, Murdale Shopping Center and University Place offer convenience and a wide range of products and services. Our downtown is home to all sorts of businesses, ranging from unique eateries to
specialty shops and nightspots. You can grab a slice of pizza, shop for the latest in outdoor gear or find the perfect gift, hear live music and or just relax under a shade tree. Stores and shops throughout the community are known for great bargains and even better customer service, marked by personal attention and commitments to detail.
It’s no wonder that many people consider our city the shopping capital of Southern Illinois.
This is where we shop. This is Carbondale.
