The Polygraph Cheaters

The video• The video I have chose to analyse is “The Polygraph

Cheaters” By This Is Hell• I picked this song because it is very similar to the genre

of music I am planning to do my video for, and I personally like the song.

• The genre of the song is hardcore. A convergence of genres has been used in the video; as live and storyline is used.

Analysis• At the beginning of the video there is a very short clip of

the band playing live before switching over to the storyline. In this quick shot you see the band jump up and down, and the music starts. There are very fast cuts throughout the video as the tempo of the song is fact and a lot is happening. In all the live shots on the video minimal lighting is used to represent a concert. These shots show the band having fun and showing passion for the music by moving around (jumping up and down etc) and close ups are used to show the emotion on the faces of the band members. You see most the members singing the words also showing their passion for the music.

• In the storyline there is a man in a suit killing people. After every killing police photos are shown of the victims. The suit represents power and authority. This man is smoking a cigarette before dropping it on the floor; therefore breaking the law by littering. This shows the man has no problem with breaking the law. The second victim he kills in the video is black and looks very strong; This is the stereotypical view of black men. However he is killed by the man in the suit. You see a man preparing to fight, by putting bandages around his hands in a locker room, killed by the man in the suit. This is unconventional as you would expect a fighter to be able to protect themselves but he is killed. There is a close up on the boxers hands before he fights, showing money and after the fight showing him throwing his towel. This shows the anger of the boxer who it seems lost his fight, yet he still got killed.

Album Cover• The album of the track on the video

is “Sundowning” by This is Hell.• The cover has a contrast of black,

red, white and grey colours. Black and red have connotations of danger and something bad happening. White colours tend to represent purity. Therefore the cover of this album in my eyes represents that there are good and bad topics on this album, and that the topics are close to the band members hearts.

• The album name “Sundowning” and the band name are in a white circle above the city. This could represent the sun; linking in with the album name and maybe the white colour represents hope through the bad ideas represented by the black and red colour on the rest of the cover

Poster• This is the poster

for the release of Sundowning by This is Hell. The poster shows the album cover I analysed on the previous slide. The prominent colours in this are black and red. The colours and very striking and from an advertising perspective would attract fans of this genre.

The black and red once again show danger and bad things going on. This markets the album as a negative album. The logo of the record label (Trustkill Records) is on the flyer to advertise their label.

T-Shirt • This is the t-shirt that was released around the same time as the album. As you can see it has the same design as the poster.

Synergy and Intertexuality

• Synergy and Intertextuality can be seen throughout this digipack. All of the products use similar looks (bats, red and black colours, same fonts) and give off the same thoughts. They are easily recognisable to each other, for example if I saw the poster I would instantly think of the t-shirt. Synergy and Intertextuality have been used well here.
