PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Premier’s Spelling Bee Final
The Spelling Bee final for Stage 2 and Stage 3 was an exciting affair with all students showing their
exceptional spelling abilities. The children displayed excellent sportsmanship towards their fellow
competitors and congratulated each other after each round. Congratulations to our winners
Madhav 5/6B and Manavjot 3/4A. They will represent Riverbank Public School at the Regional
Finals at Quakers Hill Primary School. We wish them the best of luck.
Science Week
All students thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Science Week. Years 5 and 6 students explored this
year’s theme of ‘Drones, droids and robots’ through special LEGO-robotic workshops run by the
Young Engineers group. Students experimented with some fundamental engineering principles,
including gear transmission and symmetry, as they constructed various powered robots for
themselves.
Book Week 2016 Theme: Australia! Story Country.
Each year, across Australia, The CBCA brings children and books together celebrating Children’s
Book Week. During this time Schools, Libraries, Booksellers, Authors, Illustrators and children
celebrate Australian Children's Literature. This Wednesday, Sue Whiting (Children’s Book author) is
visiting our school to talk with the students about the art of story writing. We look forward to
welcoming Ms Whiting to Riverbank. All students are encouraged to come dressed as their
favourite Book Character.
Literacy and Numeracy Week
Next week we celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Every day at Riverbank we are
excited to celebrate the importance of literacy and numeracy; the foundations of learning.
Students are looking forward to participating in mini skip counting and times tables quizzes in their
classes.
Father’s Day Stall The P&C Father’s Day Stall will be held next Thursday September 1st in the School Hall. Gifts will be $5 and cards $1.

SASS Week Next week is School Administrative and Support (SAS) Staff Recognition Week. This is an
opportunity for the whole school community to recognise and thank our amazing SAS staff for the
important work they do for our children and our community. SAS staff includes our front office
School Administrative staff, our General Assistant, and our Student Learning Support Officers (or
“teachers’ aides”). Please take the time to say thank you to our School Administrative and Support
Staff this week.
Community Meeting Monday 12 September School Hall 9.15am
On Monday 12 September, following the weekly morning assembly I will be addressing parents and
the community with a masterplan for the increased growth of an additional 400 students at
Riverbank PS. This consultation process is important and I strongly encourage everyone to attend.
There will also be an evening session in October.
NAPLAN Results
NAPLAN results went home last Wednesday with Year 3 and Year 5 students. The school
performed well compared to state averages and also performed well when compared to
statistically similar schools. The main area identified for further school improvement is reading;
particularly to ensure the expected level of growth in all students’ reading skills between Years 3
and 5. This similar trend to last year validates the school’s strategic focus on improving our
students’ reading skills. This has begun in 2016 with the implementation of the whole-class Focus
on Reading program (which emphasises explicit teaching of key comprehension skills across Years
1-6); this program was initially developed to particularly improve student growth in reading across
Years 3-6 and the L3 program in Kindergarten.
Important Dates from the P&C
Friday 9 September P&C Disco
Friday 25 November Movie Night
I look forward to seeing you at our school Athletics Carnival for Years 3-6 (and students turning 8)
next Monday 29 August at Blacktown International Sportspark.
Have a lovely fortnight

Jeanie Brown DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The Partners in Learning parent feedback survey NOW OPEN!!
This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part
of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student engagement. The survey asks parents and
carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and
engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their
child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff,
activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and
behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically
take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be
conducted between 22 August and 21 October. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary,
however, your responses are very much appreciated. The survey is open to all parents/carers from
Kindergarten to Year 6. It can be accessed here: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/rps4653
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-

Tell Them From Me Survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will
participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback
survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are
known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide
survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in
Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify
trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-
parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback
on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that
teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them
From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will
typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours
between 22 August and 21 October. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary.
Car Park
Reminding parents that the staff car park is only for staff. It cannot be used as a thoroughfare or as
an exit and entrance point to the school. To ensure student safety we ask you to use the front or
back gates when entering and exiting the school. We thank you for your cooperation on this
matter.
Lost Property
As we enter the warmer months the amount of lost property has grown. We ask you to ensure that
all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. This will allow the
teachers to return the clothing to their rightful owner.
Thank you
Michael Kammerer

Science Week at Riverbank!
This week Riverbank celebrated Science Week and had a wickedly fun time! The theme this year
was ‘Drones, droids and robots’. All the teachers got into the spirit and dressed like crazy scientists
to conduct their science investigations with each of the classes. Students got to engage in a variety
of fun experiments such as; making delicious ice cream and sherbet, building exploding Lego
volcanoes and marshmallow catapults, exploring magnetic forces and static electricity, creating
slime and parachutes, and many more exciting experiments! Stage 3 also created some amazing
Lego STEM robotics with the assistance of the ‘Young Engineers’ team that facilitated the sessions.
Both the students and teachers had a fantastic day and we can’t wait to see what next year’s
Science Week will hold!

What is Science Week?
National Science Week aims to reach as many Australians as possible each year with a positive
message about the impact that Science has on our lives, our economy, our society and our world.
It is Australia’s major national celebration of Science. It provides an opportunity for the entire
Science community to celebrate and showcase Science to the Australian public and the world.
The 2016 Theme was Droids, Drones and Robots.
Drones, droids and robots are all machines. Drones are robots which fly and (an)droids are robots
which look like humans.
In Stage 3, each student had the choice of making LEGO models of either android or robot rabbits.
The following principles were applicable to the LEGO models
Understanding of transmission
Gear transmission
Understanding of driver and driven gear
Use of idler gear and
Symmetry
When Primary and High School make delicious fun... 5/6B was the lucky class this week to be invited by the High School for a taster lesson in the TAS department of the Ponds High School. This is an outcome of the Middle School Program that we are following here at Riverbank. Students made chocolate crackles under the supervision of Ms Wakim, the TAS teacher. Students were engaged in measuring their ingredients, mixing them, pouring them into paper moulds and finally freezing them to make their own little item. They loved every moment of it and were even happy to wash and clean up responsibly. This has been a tremendous experience for my students and they felt really grown up! My sincere thanks to The Ponds High School for allowing us this opportunity. Sanjukta Banerji Classroom Teacher
Science Week indulgence
Another exciting activity that 5/6B enjoyed this week was Lego Robotics, where they made their own little machines which ran on motor. Mrs Brown organised this so that every student of Stage 3 could avail of such a hands on fun experience which links so well with Science and Technology. We have indeed been having a sensational time this week! We are sharing some pictures with you. Sanjukta Banerji Classroom Teacher Hindu Scripture
Angad Sharma 5/6B and Janam Bhavsar 5/6R have created a spectacular three dimensional artwork to represent the story of the origin of the holy river Ganga in India. Mrs Anuradha Shukla, their Scripture teacher was very proud of them and is organising a special certificate for them. The Hindu
Scripture team has been doing a splendid job in making their students aware of the various festivals and the story behind them. The teachers also follow the Hindu calendar of festivals so that students have a live feel of what they are learning about. Students are now deeply involved in their lessons and look forward to learning something new each week. Stage 3 is encouraged to work on various projects related to their lessons. This artwork is indicative of their dedication. Sanjukta Banerji Scripture Coordinator
Book Week is Week 6
This year the theme for Children’s Book Week is Australia: Story Country. To celebrate this most important week in the school calendar, we will be having a special visit from children’s author Sue Whiting, on Wednesday 24th August. A separate note regarding this has been sent home. The cost for this has already been charged via the Term 3 invoices.
Please feel free to come dressed as your favourite book character on Wednesday!

P&C CORNER
Term 3 NO 14
What a busy a busy year for Riverbank Public School. I sat down the other day before a meeting and
thought are we in term 3 yet! And just reflected on what our P&C has done. Between fundraising, Merit
Panels and now with Cindy Wright representing the community on the Building Project, organising
School Disco, Father’s Day and Pocket Money day. It is hard to believe that term 4 is fast approaching
and we will be awaiting Santa Clause to visit us!!
As you will see we are having a Pocket Money day for the children on the 23rd August 2016. This idea
came about with the Mother’s day stall. The children love buying gifts and I thought it was a lovely idea
to allow the children the same opportunity for them to buy something for themselves. This will be a trial.
If it works we will continue to have this a staple within our P&C
And lastly our Movie night. This a first for our P&C – it is something that will grow over the years. This is a
major fundraising event for the school and hopefully this will be a success! WE can only try. There is
much work to do and many hands to make light work. If you would like help please email

Have a Wonderful week. Lesley
