Good News Reflection Second Sunday of Lent March 17, 2019

Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18 Ps 27:1, 7-9, 13-14 Philippians 3:17--4:1 Luke 9:28b-36

Pray: Lord Jesus, heal in me the wounds that prevent me from experiencing my Father's love, and may Your Glory dwell in me as a witness of Your light. Amen. Light in our darkness In this Sunday's Gospel reading, we see Jesus reveal the uncreated light of his true identity and we hear the Father say, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him."

We experience Christ's deepest identity every time we listen to him and allow the Holy Spirit to enlighten our understanding of his words and guidance.

By listening to him, we let his uncreated light consume the darkness that still lingers within us. Then, the people around us experience more of him, because they meet him in us -- in our actions, in our compassion, in our forgiveness, etc. This is evangelization!

Lent is a time of concentrating on our need for Christ to shed his light into our areas of darkness. When we let Jesus enlighten us so that we repent (which means change), seeking and receiving forgiveness and the Holy Spirit's power to change, we become more like Christ. We shine more brilliantly with him. And we enter more fully into his ministry of redeeming the world. Although there is suffering in this ministry, we know that the pain of Good Friday is always followed by the victory of Easter.

It's in the trials and sacrifices of life -- our own crucifixions -- where our holiness changes the world. Do we dare follow Jesus all the way to Calvary? It's the only way to get to Easter! Our trials are his blood being shed again. Our pains are his pains. We're already on the cross with Jesus! So why not embrace this extreme intima-cy with him for the sake of those who've scourged us and betrayed us?

By loving those who don't love us, forgiving those who mistreat us, and working hard to replace evil with the kingdom of God, we reveal the light of Christ to those who live in darkness.

Questions for Personal Reflection: Think of a redemption you've experienced, an area of darkness in your life that Jesus shed his light upon when he inspired you to repent. How has this change increased your holiness? What is he inviting you to change now, something that's been difficult to look at or hard to overcome? What would you like to hear from Jesus that will help you turn this darkness into holiness? After you figure it out, take this to the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation.

Questions for Family & Community Faith Sharing: Why is the Passion of Christ your passion? What crosses are you carrying that you hope will help Christ redeem the world from sin and darkness? How does your cross purify your own holiness?

Bulletins

Hello fellow parishioners! In an attempt to streamline the bulletin and cut costs where feasible, our bulletins will be looking a little different, starting in May.

First, you may have noticed we sent out a Parish Happenings in February, which is something we haven't done in a while. We plan on doing the Happenings 3 times a year: before Advent, before Lent and before Summer.

Starting in April, we will have a full bulletin mid-month in January, March, April, July, August, September, October and December. These will look much as they do now. They will include upcoming events for more than just a given week.

The rest of the weeks the bulletin will be one folded sheet (gives us 4 pages) with mostly static items (Mass intentions, parish contact info and Mass times...) and those items pertinent to that week (blood drives, Knights' Breakfast, workshops...). Any extra notices from the Archdiocese will be tucked in as a flyer.

By making these changes, we hope to cut the printing costs by ~30%, depending on flyers and the number of bulletins we run. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Teresa at the office. Thank you in advance for your support.

Notes from the Liturgist, Ace Tupasi

“Suffering” in the Light of “La Pieta”

God always brings good out of suffering – even if it means because of what you are going through, someone else is praying more, loving more or turning back to God. Remember, God is outside of time, and His love for us is eternal.

God heals us eternally but this doesn’t mean we won’t suffer greatly, some, tragically, more than others, while on this earth.

Sometimes when we experience suffering it is a big wake-up call that reminds us that we are all on this earth for a relatively short time. You never know when your life or a loved one’s life will end.

Suffering reminds us how much we need God and how often we are not in control. It reminds us how we need to give God more attention, love Him, and love one another more. It reminds us we need to forgive more, pray more, listen more, talk less and be really present in each other’s lives. Suffering can make us more compassionate and sympathetic to others, with a greater capacity to love. Spend time, not money, on the people you love. Life is beautiful but way too short to spend it on things that don’t matter.

The Pieta is a representation of the horrific nature of Jesus’ crucifixion, and the reality of a mother losing her child. The death of Christ is essential to Christian doctrine and the juxtaposition of Christ’s human and divine nature is alive in the Pieta.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline

to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is

simply too alluring, or a prayer time slipped past

before you knew it. Don’t give up! Let the failure be a

reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the

power of Lent is that we do it together, and although

individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is

fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up,

we keep moving.

The desire to “give something up” for Lent is an

age-old impulse in the Christian heart. Remember, we

don’t always have to “give something UP,” we can

“GIVE something,” too; add prayer time, adoration

time, study the bible... We get better at it over the

years, and move more deeply into the meaning and

message of acts of sacrifice, whatever form it takes.

So there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are

not discouraged by the failure and give up. —James Field y TM

Registration is now open for the 7th annual Sacred Liturgy Conference hosted this year by the Diocese of Spokane at the invitation of Bishop Thomas Daly.

It will take place on the campus of Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington, May 28-31, 2019. Four beautiful Gregorian liturgies will be held at the nearby Churches of St Aloysius and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. We hope you can join us for this event.

This year’s theme is “The Living Waters of the Eucharist” and will focus on the Eucharist as the preeminent source of supernatural grace in both our personal lives and the world. A special conference session will in-clude an unseen interview with His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Zen from Hong Kong, China on the current state of the Liturgy in China.

The Sacred Liturgy Conference is open to anyone interested in the treasures of the Catholic Faith, and prom-ises to be intellectually, liturgically, and spiritually enriching. Come join us as we deepen our understanding and love for the Holy Eucharist, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
