It’s my pleasure to give my message for this magazine. Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC) was establishedin 1974 and has now become a prime stakeholder in developing Medical Education in the Punjab amongthe Medical Colleges of public sector.
Rawalpindi Medical College’s strengths are its wealth of knowledge and experience. Rawalpindi Medical College is contributing to education in the different fields of health care as per the growing demands of ournation. In this modern era constant updating of knowledge is mandatory to be amongst top notch medical institutions and RMC is following this trend to produce the most competent graduates.
In RMC every year students are getting positions in university examinations and hundreds of graduatefollow their postgraduate pursuits with CPSP and foreign postgraduate institutions. All this has beenpossible through the unflinching support and efforts of academic and administrative staff of the college.

It is indeed a great honor and privilege for me to be the Principal of this great institution. It was not in my slightest imagination when I joined this college as a first year medical student 33 years ago that I would one day be given the honor of being the principal of this college. For me, RMC is not just a medical college, it is way beyond that. Everything that Allah has given me is because ofRMC. Being the graduate of second batch RMC, being the first Rawalian FCPS, first Rawalian AssistantProfessor, first Rawalian Professor and now the first Rawalian Principal – my love and passion for RMC, its faculty, its staff and above all the wonderful students is not describable by words. The vision of the founderPrincipal of RMC, Prof. Abdul Lateef (Late) "Enter to learn; leave to serve." is engraved into every Rawalian.I am also grateful and appreciate the services of all our teachers and past and present faculty members who have given enormous services in the development of this institution.
Since its inception, Rawalpindi Medical College has produced many brilliant doctors who are serving allover the globe and bringing good name to the country and the institution. Apart from academic contribution, this institution also provides specialized Health care facilities via Holy Family Hospital, BenazirBhutto Hospital and District Headquarter Hospital to a vast population of Rawalpindi/Islamabad andmajority of Northern Punjab.
The excellent faculty of RMC ensures outstanding undergraduate and post graduate medical education and training. This is supplemented with great opportunities for research and extra-curricular activities, whichhelp prepare our doctors for a career in practical medicine.
Through out my career, I have learned that excellence is not a destination but a journey. Although it is agreat honor for me to be the Principal, RMC but I also know it is a huge responsibility and challenge. History of Rawalpindi Medical College RMC started functioning on 18
th March, 1974, along with Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad. It was shifted
to Rawalpindi on 5th
November 1974, and housed in the present building (Science Block of GordonCollege), which was nationalized under MLR-118 and handed over to RMC. This is now known as the RMCOld Campus & is housing the 1
st & 2
nd year MBBS students.
The Professors who served as Principal of the College are: Prof. Abdul Latif, Prof. Muhammad Nawaz, Prof.
S.S Naeem-ul-Hamid, Prof. Jamil Akhtar, Prof. Muhammad Iqbal, Prof. M. Naseemullah, Prof. Malik H.

The New Campus of RMC is part of RMC Teaching Complex, situated in the Holy Family Hospital, and isbeing used by the 3
rd, 4
th & Final Year students. There are three teaching hospitals attached with RMC,
namely Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital comprising of 2000beds.
Since its inception in 1974, more than 7900 students have graduated from Rawalpindi Medical College to serve the cause of humanity all over the globe. These include more than 588 foreign nationals working inUK, USA, Australia, South Africa, the Gulf States and Far Eastern countries. Our students have made us proud by claiming top positions in the university examinations 31 times and bysecuring distinctions in different subjects (672 times).
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council recognize the college. In addition a number of its departmentshave been accorded recognition by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP), forPostgraduate training leading to fellowship/membership of CPSP. Furthermore the University of Punjab, University of Health Sciences, Lahore and other universities in the country extend full accreditation for these postgraduate qualifications.
At the international level, the college is recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC) of UK since 1983. RMC is also listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) directory of accredited medical colleges.

First Rawalian PrincipalDr. Muhammad Umar is the first Rawalian Principal, who received charge of Principal RMC in March 2013. he is the graduate of second batch RMC, the first Rawalian FCPS, first Rawalian Assistant Professor of medicine, first Rawalian Professor of medicine and now the first Rawalian Principal. He has set an example of hard work and continuous struggle for the students of Rawalpindi Medical College.
Board of Management (BOM), RMC
Board of Management is one of the policy making body serving Rawalpindi Medical College in collaboration with management of the college. It consist of official and non official members include secetry health Punjab, secetry finance Punjab, Principal RMC and allied hospital and additional secetry finance, additional establishment health department. Non official members include Dr. Muhammad aslam (chirman), Lt. Gen. r Najam Khan (Member), Dr. Fazal e hadi (member), Malik Muhammad farooq (member), Mr Khalil Ahmed . It also helps the college for recruitment of fecality and non guzardstaff on special seats of BOM, after conducting interviews by members of BOM and final scrutiny in meeting of BOM.

Old Campus, Rawalpindi Medical College
New Campus of RMC at Holy Family Hospital is fully functional since October 2008. Four Departments(Pathology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine and Pharmacology Department) have been shiftedfrom old campus to New Teaching Block in November 2008 and third and Fourth year classes started in this building.

Holy Family Hospital was established in 1948 and has been affiliated with Rawalpindi Medical College since1977. It is an 850 bedded hospital situated in Satellite Town. It has departments of Medicine, Surgery, Eye, ENT, Pediatrics, Gynecology & obstetrics. An excellent library exists for reference purposes. This includes
the new block with state of art radiology facility. The clinical teaching has now moved completely to thesepremises.
Holy Family Hospital Benazir Bhutto Hospital is situated on the ever-busy Murree Road. It houses besides all the other clinical departments of Medicine, Surgery, Eye, ENT, Pediatrics, Gynecology & obstetrics, Orthopedics, Urology, Psychiatry and dermatology.

District Head Quarter Hospital provides health care to the inner city of Rawalpindi and also serves asreferral center for trauma patients. It has departments of Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics,Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery ,Chest Diseases and orthopedics.

There are three schools of nursing which exist in District Head Quarters hospital, Benazir Bhutto hospitaland Holy Family hospital. They provide high quality nursing training to nursing students. Nursing students are also provided with facility of hostels in all three Allied Hospitals.

RMC Libraries *Rawalpindi Medical College
There is a central library on the second floor of the RMC old campus building with the latest editions of all the Medical Text & Reference books on a wide variety of medical & paramedical topics. The college libraryalso subscribes to leading international & national medical journals, review articles. Another state of the art of the library has been constructed in RMC Holy Family hospital which has got plenty of new books and very good learning environment for students. Students can enjoy reading any of the two libraries campus of the RMC.
DHQ Library Opening Ceremony *District Head Quarter Hospital library was recently inaugurated during RMC International Conference on
25th December 2013. This library is still in the process of further development and improvement. The
college management intends to improve this library to a state of art centre for learning.

This hostel is exclusive for Post graduate trainees’ & House of Benazir Bhuto hospital. There are 40 rooms along with one
well furnished Study room and one TV Room. Post graduate trainees’ who are on night call can also stay in this hostel.
1. Lady Doctors Hostel has been completed at the cost of Rs. 30 (Million).
2. Renovation of bath rooms of Lady Doctors Hostel has been done.

Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CLD)
PML-N central leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan inaugurated the Centre for Liverand Digestive Diseases at the Holy Family Hospital here on Monday 14th May, 2012. The Centre for Liver & Digestive Diseases (CLD) is a state-of-the-art centre to cater to the needs of patients with liver and gastrointestinal diseases. The centre has been established at the Holy Family Hospital with agrant of Rs163 million by the Punjab government and Rs35.5 million by donations of doctors andpharmaceutical companies. The centre has facilities for Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), Endoscopic
Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography and procedures through Radio Frequency Ablation. Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases also had a basic Endoscopy Suit of 5 rooms for Upper GI and LowerGI Endoscopy, Banding, Disinfection and Recovery Room.
Multi Organ Failure Centre Opening Ceremony MOF Centre was recently inaugurated by the adviser to the Chief Minister Punjab on health KhawajaSalman Rafiq in December 2013. MOF is new concept in patient care. This comprised of dialysis Area, 4 bed ICU and 3 bedded Liver Dialysis Area (MARS). This centre is established with Rs. 12 million by generous donation of RMCOF, UK Alumni, Australia Alumni, UAE Alumni and Dr. Muhammad Aslam, Chairman BOM RMC, Mr. Khalil Ahmad CEOTehzeeb Bakers, Rawalpindi.
Psychiatry Department, BBH *
Institute of Psychiatry is a collaborative center for PMRC in addition to being a World Health organizationCollaborative Center for mental Health. This unit is responsible for initiating the project on Integration of
Mental health in Primary Health-care by the Federal Government. Institute of Psychiatry has a special
research cell for inculcating research spirit in the students. This research cell is working in collaboration
with the British Council, Pakistan. There is cash prize annually for the best young researchers.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU), BBH *ICU in Benazir Bhuto Hospital has been recently constructed with high quality equipment to provide intensive care to critical patients the nursing staff and doctors in this ICU have also been trained to use this sophisticated equipment efficiently and effectively. This infrastructure providing high quality patient care.
Gynecology & Obstetrics Unit, BBH *The Gynecology & obstetrics unit of Benazir Bhuto Hospital shares a major load of gyne & Obs patients of Rawalpindi city.
1. Previously Gynae ward was working at the first floor in the main hospital building. Gynae ward is successfully shifted to ground floor and is having a graceful look.
2. Donations have been recieved from helping hand for the Gynae Ward including Ultrasoundmachine
3. Development / Rehabilitation of Labour Room & Operation Theatre of Gynae & ObstetricDepartment has been done at the cost of Rs. 3.7 (Million) (Funded by Dr. Muhammad Aslam,
Chairman BOM).
Paediatrics OPD, BBHOut patient department of peadiatrics at benazir bhuto hospital has also undervent renovations including:
1. Distempering / Painting of Pediatric Block has been done. 2. Philanthropists were involved in the development of waiting are for paediatrics ward.
Accident & Emergency, BBH *Emergency department of Benazir Bhuto hospital has been working day & night to deal with patients arriving here. For the working of any department many factors are involved. Among these infrastructure is very important. Some renovation has also been done with the cost of six million in this department which a briefly mentioned below:
1. Tile work has been done at the cost of Rs. 6.00 (Million). 2. Equipment has been purchased for the treatment room of A&E Department i.e. Mobile Operation
Lights 02, Universal Operation Tables 02, ECG Machine, Instrument Trolleys, Office Furniture etc. 3. Renovation of bathrooms.
State of the art operation theater, DHQ *A state of the art operation theater with intensive care unit has been establish on first floor on District Head Quarter and this has been equipped with high class machinery for best quality patient care. Medical and paramedical staff at DHQ hospital is working day & night to serve humanity in this modular operation theater.
Rawalians’ Burn Centre*
A burn centre establish in Holy Family Hospital for care of critically burn patient. This centre has been establishedwith the help of Rawalpindi Medical College overseas foundation.
Waiting Area, BBH
Keeping in view the difficulties of the attendance of the indoor patients in Benazir Bhutto Hospital, recently Construction of sheds and waiting areas has been done adjacent to Gynaecology and Peadiatrics ward.
Cafeterias for students at RMC *
Well stocked college cafeterias are located in both old & new campus of the college building. The students can avail the food services on payment. There are separate seating lounges for girls and boys. The cafeteria is open from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm.

Cafeteria for Doctors at BBH Cafeteria Exclusively for Doctors has been completed and had started working in October 2013 with donation by
Chairman Board of Management. This cafeteria provides good quality food, cold drinks & tea for the doctors working at BBH.
Renal Transplant Centre, BBH A renal transplant centre has been establish in Benazir Bhutto hospital recently and ceremony was held to formally inaugurate the Renal Transplant Programme at the BBH on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. Chairman Board of Management Rawalpindi Medical College and Allied Hospitals Dr. Mohammad Aslam and Principal Rawalpindi Medical College Dr. Mohammad Umar inaugurated the programme at the Urology Department of the hospital. Professor Mumtaz Chief Urology did first Renal Transplant in BBH 2013.

Telemedicine and Surgical Skill Lab, HFH
Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electroniccommunication for the health and education of the patient or health care provider and for the purpose ofimproving patient care. Requirements for telemedicine include tools like computer workstations, dermascope, e-scope, software, connectivity and trained health professionals.
TeIemedicine/E-heaIth Training Center
The Telemedicine/e-health Training Center is a joint Pak-US collaboration. This center is based at thesurgical Unit II, Holy Family Hospital and has high bandwidth telecommunication link with Collaborating
institutions in USA, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Richmond, Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research center (TATRC), Fort Detrick and Remote Center at THQ Hospital, Pindi Gheb. TheFaculty at the center has been trained at the leading telemedicine centers of the USA.
Telemedicine Software:
Telemedicine software is client server based software designed specially for the healthcare professionals of
Pakistan and to match the telecommunication infrastructure of the country. It has three components; Remote unit, hospital unit and a server unit.
Training Lab
The training lab at Surgical Unit II, HFH is fully equipped with all the necessary telemedicine tools,
software, high bandwidth connectivity and wireless LAN. The equipment includes computer workstations,peripheral devices-derma-scopes & e-scopes and videoconferencing equipment for live demonstration ofTele consultations.
Skill Laboratory 0f RMC at HFH
A state of the art skill laboratory was established at New Teaching Block a few years back. It is meant to teach various skills to students via instruments and dummies. In skill laboratory obstetrical, gynaecological and surgical procedures like cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intravenous cannula insertion, performing laryngoscopy etc are taught, which helps students later on in their particle life to provide high quality patient care.
RMC Parks The lawns of old campus are already very well maintained and students enjoy their 1st & 2nd Year period in old campus in pleasant environment. The lawns of New Teaching Block have been recently developed beautifully, renovated and decorated with colorful seasonal flowers. The park was bult with generous donation of Rs. 1.3 million by Dr. Rao Babar (Old Rawalian 1982) of USA in Dec 2013
RMC Auditorium; the beautifulIt is located in Old Campus of the college and is utilized for various purposes including recreational activities of students, conferences and seminars etc.
RMC Mosque & Transport Service
There is a mosque in the college premises, located near the boys’ hostel. For female students, there is a separate prayer room, near the girl’s cafeteria lounge.
The college provides transport facilities to its students to and from the hostels (girls & boys) and the teaching hospitals attached with Rawalpindi Medical College. The bus stand is located near the Latif Auditorium. The students should check the schedule of departure of buses by looking at the main student notice board. There is also bus service available for pick/ drop of students residing in Islamabad. This service is available on charge of Rs. 1500/- every month and seats are limited.
Stalls in International Scientific Conference of RMCBeautiful and modern stalls were set up by Department of Medical Education and various pharmaceutical companies during the International Scientific Conference at Rawalpindi Medical College.
DME Workshops during International Scientific Conference of RMC Twenty eight workshops were conducted by various specialties of RMC during the international ScientificConference at RMC in December 2013.

E-RMC Journal of Rawalpindi Medical College (JRMC) /RMC research forum/SHIFA & RMC website Rawalpindi Medical College also publishes its own research journal ‘Journal of Rawalpindi Medical College’ (JRMC), which is an indexed journal and it is published bi annually. Recently a research forum of RMC has been launched which would provide a plate form to researchers of RMC and would also provide statistical help for research projects.

Students of RMC annually generate a college magazine “SHIFA”, which contains diverse literary items including afsanas, urdu poetry, Punjabi section, interviews with legend, comics and colorful pictures of activities of students through out the year. RMC has also got its own website for various kind of information and activities happening in the college. This website is regularly updated and it is process of further improvement.

RMC Hiking ClubAnnual hike in Margalla Hills, Islamabad is arranged in winter/spring and is competitive with prizes for the nimblest of RMC students.
Department of Medical Education (DME), RMC Department of medical education was established in RMC for about eight years back in old campus in RMC. This department is successfully running problem based learning sessions for 1st & 2nd Years MBBS students, workshops regarding faculty development program, continuingmedical education sessions for facility, educational research and also supports college for various miscellaneous literary and academic activities.
