Dear Parent and Guardians,

We welcome our students back after winter break

and a very successful Spirit Week. Congratulations

to the Spirit Week Committee, the Student Govern-

ment officers and the moderators for making this

one of the most enjoyable Spirit Weeks in recent

memory. I also wish to thank all of our students for

their generous donations to the South Buffalo Food Pantry. Our Spirit Week

Food Fight will provide many families with the food they need during very dif-

ficult economic times. The Spirit of Mercy and the legacy of Catherine McAuley

shine through in our students!

March will be a long month but an opportunity for us to pick up the academic

pace. With consistent instruction and multiple opportunities to meet with

teachers and attend review sessions your daughter should be able to acquire the

knowledge and the skills she needs to achieve mastery level on all of her exams.

Your daughter needs to push herself and not be satisfied with simply passing.

With your encouragement and ours, she should be able to achieve mastery (85

or better) on all her exams but most significantly on her Regents exams. Her

hard work in March will pay off in June.

June 30th will be my last day as principal of Mount Mercy Academy. After

twenty-seven years at MMA and eight as principal and over thirty-three years in

education it is time to pass leadership to a new generation. Retirement is a scary

and yet exciting prospect and this decision was not made lightly. I will always be

a part of the Mercy Community and a supporter of Mount Mercy Academy as it

fulfills its mission to educate young women.

March will bring us spring, daylight savings time and a time to reflect and pray

as we enter the Lenten Season. May all of us in our Mercy community use this

time to acknowledge our sinfulness and hope for the renewal Lent can bring.

God bless you all.

Sincerely,

Paulette Gaske

A FRIENDLY NOTE FROM THE MMA NURSE

As the weather starts to warm and the days become longer, it can only mean one thing.

Spring is in the air.

“ If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant. If we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”

– Anne Bradstreet

This is the time of year when we see an increase in allergic type symptoms; runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and red, itchy eyes. If your daughter is suffering from these symptoms, please consider medication before coming to school. It will help them to remain in school and avoid the “dreaded” call from me, the school nurse with some-one who wants to come home. Medi-cations can only be taken at school if a Doctor’s order is in her medical file.

Spring is also a good time to look at making those yearly physical appoint-ments. New York State Education Law requires all new entrants, 10th grade students, and those participating in sports have a current physical on file in their cumulative health record. Forms can be downloaded from the school website, obtained from the Health Office or your physician my have their own. Physicals are good for one calendar year.

It is important that our records are up to date and meeting the standards set by NYS. If your daughter had a physi-cal or any immunization during the current school year, a copy should be sent to the health office.

Enjoy the sunshine and warmth that it will bring. Happy Spring! - kathy Burns, RN

Ashley Malicki (Senior), Morgan Haettich (Sophomore) and Hanna Hart (Junior).

Mount Mercy Academy and Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School Health Care Career

Club for freshmen and sophomores visited the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in

Downtown Buffalo on February 15. Students

met with representatives from several areas of

medical careers and research including Roswell

Park Cancer Institute. They learned about a

variety of career opportunities as well as such

particulars as the field of Medical Acoustics.

Andrea McClain, a product development engi-

neer and inventor of a special device for COPD,

asthma and chronic bronchitis patients both for personal therapy and testing,

spoke with the students about her field and her position within the Buffalo Niagara

Medical Campus. Representatives from Roswell Park spoke about Robotic Surgery,

advocacy and marketing, “Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities,” and the internships

programs at Roswell for high school students.

We went on to Hauptman Woodward to meet Dr. Duax who shared with us the

many areas of research, took us on a tour of the labs and introduced us to the sci-

entists working on his team. Most importantly, he shared with us the high school

program where he works with students, including one of MMA’s recent graduates.
