The Pediatric Special Interest Group Announces the One Million Pokes Saved Campaign It is estimated that 90% of children entering the hospital setting will likely experience a needlestick or “poke”. As seasoned clinicians we know that in the world of neonates and pediatrics, attaining access in one stick is often difficult- even in the best of circumstances. The Pediatric Special Interest Group Announces the One Million Pokes Saved CampaignIt is estimated that 90% of children entering the hospital setting will likely experience a needlestick or “poke”. As seasoned clinicians we know that in the world of neonates and pediatrics, attaining access in one stick is often difficult- even in the best of circumstances. Complicating this scenario is limited highly skilled vascular access inserters. In the end, we have increasing venipuncture attempts, needlestick pain, distraught families, children traumatized, and poor overall outcomes.

The Pediatric Special Interest Group is announcing a campaign to raise awareness to this problem. Our goal is simple: to reduce ‘pokes’ for infants and children.

Through the campaign, our goal is to advance research to better understand the problem and study initiatives to reduce pokes. We plan to focus on education, awareness, and the creation of resources to help hospitals and health care providers. It’s a big project and we have a lot of work ahead of us.

“We” means YOU! At the AVA Scientific Meeting we will have opportunities to sign up for areas that you are interested in. We will extend this opportunity to our general membership as well. Please keep your eyes on AVA emails for more information soon.

We can imagine the day that children don’t experience unnecessary pokes. There will be many parents who don’t sweat watching their child get poked. They won’t even know they were spared. But we will. Hope you will join us in this campaign. We will be sending out more information so that you can get involved.

AVA ASM, 16-19 September Several members of the AVATAR Group will be heading to the USA next month to catch up with our good friends and vascular access colleagues at the 30th Association of Vascular Access ASM in Orlando, Florida. AVA is always a very special event, and it’s a fabulous opportunity to showcase research, promote best practice, network with clinicians and researchers from around the globe, and discover the newest, latest and greatest in vascular access from our industry colleagues. Several of the AVATAR Group are invited speakers at this year’s event, including Dr Samantha Keogh, Dr Claire Rickard, and Amanda Ullman, this year’s recipient of the Janet Pettit Scholar award. Peter Carr promises an engaging presentation about vascular access specialist teams, and Evan Alexandrou and Gillian Ray-Barruel will present findings from the One Million Global PIVC study. It promises to be an extremely interesting 4 days, and there will hopefully be time to say hi to Mickey Mouse! If you’ll be at AVA this year, do come and say G’day! AVATAR Travel to AVA2016 is possible thanks to an educational grant from Becton Dickinson.
