Miles Davis Tribute featuring brad Turnerbirth of the Cool meets bitches brew
A thrilling cast of 11 local musical stalwarts plus
Canadian jazz icon Brad Turner present a weekend
of music by Miles Davis celebrating what would
have been Miles’ 90th year.
Join the band as they perform the contrasting
music from two of Davis’ seminal recordings, “Birth
of The Cool” and “Bitches Brew”.
“Birth of The Cool” - Recorded in 1949 and 1950
and released in 1957, with this recording, Davis
leaped out of the bebop genre and planted the
seed for the cool jazz sound. Featuring a nonet of
unique instrumentation, lush jazz arrangements,
and a cast of subtle, yet potent soloists, “Birth of the
Cool” introduced a sophisticated jazz sound that
laid the groundwork for modern jazz arranging
and cool jazz improvisation.
“Bitches Brew” – This 1970 release became the
pivotal expression of Davis’ electric jazz era. By
introducing electric piano, guitar, and bass, along
with rock-influenced grooves and experimental
individual and group improvised elements, this
Grammy Award-winning recording paved the way
for the fusion era of jazz.
For this special event, the Yardbird Suite is very
pleased to present Vancouver-based trumpeter,
pianist, drummer and composer Brad Turner in the
“Miles Davis chair”. Brad is one of Canada’s most in-
demand and highly-esteemed jazz musicians. He
has performed and/or recorded with such artists
as Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, John
Scofield, Michael Moore, Reneé Rosnes, Jimmy
Greene, Ingrid Jensen, Peggy Lee, Dave Douglas,
Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Kenny Werner, Russell
Malone and Ernie Watts.
As a leader, Brad has released nine albums, seven
as a trumpeter with the Brad Turner Quartet, and
two as a pianist with his trio. Three of those releases
have been nominated for Juno awards. He has
also won Juno awards for his recordings with the
internationally-acclaimed electric
jazz group Metalwood.

This quartet was put together by Canadian
jazz impresario Cory Weeds to commemorate
the 13th anniversary of his Cellar Jazz Club in
Vancouver. Weeds is a respected saxophonist
who has released ten critically-acclaimed
albums under his own name including “As Of
Now” with Harold Mabern. His latest release
“This Happy Madness” with the Jeff Hamilton
Trio graced the Jazz Week charts for 17 weeks
including two weeks at #1.
Piano master Harold Mabern is an
unforgettable performer. He turns every
performance into an informal master class
regaling audiences with his first-hand account
of jazz history and some of the best piano
playing you will ever hear. Is there a more
ebullient or convincing advocate for jazz
today? His music is marked by unmistakable
purpose and harmonic authority and he
employs a powerful technique and deep
insight into a wide range of repertoire from the
Great American Songbook to his own soulful
originals.
Mabern’s piano style has been described
as being “aggressive, very positive, crashing
out chords that drop like pile drivers and
warming up and down the keyboard with
huge, whooping bursts of action”, while, at
the same time, he shows “a keen sensitivity”
as “an extremely perceptive accompanist”. He
has played and recorded with a who’s who of
jazz including Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, Jackie
McLean and Wes Montgomery to name a few.

Join 2016 Juno nominated trumpeter Al
Muirhead for the release of his most ambitious
CD project to date - ‘Northern Adventures –
The Canada Sessions Vol. 1’. The album brings
Al together with many of Canada’s jazz greats
performing a collection of his favourite jazz
standards. For the Edmonton CD release, Al will
featuring some of his special guests from the
recording including long-time friend Tommy
Banks on piano, Vancouver jazz giant Campbell
Ryga on sax, and award-winning bassist Kodi
Hutchinson. Watch out for some other special
guests throughout the evening!
A western Canadian jazz icon, who recently came
to wider prominence in North America with the
release of his debut album ‘It’s About Time’ at the
age of 80, Al Muirhead is now making up for lost
time with his third release in two years.
Featuring five different small ensembles of
both old friends and new, Al harkens back to his
youth, calling standards from the Great American
Songbook live in the studio. ‘Northern Adventures’
features jazz performed in the way the artform
began - with spontaneity and joy, and with a
command of the music that only players of the
calibre that Al has assembled can.
‘Northern Adventures – The Canada Sessions Vol.
1’ brings together a veritable who’s who of the
Canadian jazz scene including award-winning
musicians Don Thompson (piano/bass) and
Reg Schwager (guitar), Guido Basso (trumpet/
flugelhorn) and Tommy Banks (piano), Laila
Biali (vocals), Ben Wittman (percussion) and
Kodi Hutchinson (double bass), Mike Murley
(saxophone) and Chris Andrew (piano), and
finally Campbell Ryga (saxophone) and Mike Rud
(guitar).
Al Muirhead has long been an iconic figure on
the Canadian jazz scene. And the trumpeter,
composer, arranger, sideman and recording artist
The besT oF alberTa JaZZ series
al Muirhead: northern adventure CD release
has been making listeners take notice for longer
than jazz fans might realize. Born in Regina, by
age 12 he was playing in the Regina Symphony
and dance bands. In his teens, Muirhead began to
take notice of greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles
Davis, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, and Charlie
Parker. While Muirhead’s playing is infused with
the indelible influence of jazz giants, his flowing,
melodic sound is his own — and has become
influential in its own right.
Muirhead has worked with legends such as
Guido Basso, Diana Krall, Paul Anka, Rosemary
Clooney, Frank Mills and Dizzy Gillespie. In 2013,
he was honoured with the Western Canadian
Music Awards’ Heritage Award for his mentorship
and industry-building. In 2015, he earned the
Saskatchewan Jazz Festival’s Special Recognition
Award.
Muirhead unleashes melodies that are incredibly
inventive and utterly timeless. Now at 81 years
old, he shows no sign of slowing down with the
release of his third album ‘Northern Adventures –
The Canada Sessions Vol. 1’.

There’s a lot of music that has been written and performed during the past one hundred years and being a jazz musician today means that there’s an expectation that you know almost all of it. One of the beautiful aspects of this type of music is that it allows cultures, imitations in life and lineage to come together. The ‘language’ of the All-American art form lends itself well to Latin music as both have their roots from overseas. From these points of origin, the music has undergone a gradual process of transformation through thousands of musicians, regardless of where they are from.
The Latin Side of #Alberta Jazz is an occasion to celebrate these riches. This night connects musicians from across the province to perform a style of the music that bridges different worlds as explored by the various artists on stage - music that is full of dedication, camaraderie and community.
Jerrold Dubyk is a Silverstein Works artist.

“It’s a rare and good thing when two talented
performers join forces”. Audiences, critics, and
blues lovers all over North America and Europe
seem to agree.
Diana Braithwaite’s career as a solo singer-
songwriter started when she was a teenager, and
her shows have led her into the company of some
of the finest electric and acoustic blues guitarists
including Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, T Model
Ford, Mel Brown and Jeff Healey.
Diana combines elements from Nina Simone,
Esther Phillips, Lil Green and others to create her
own unique authentic blues style. Recognized as a
forceful presence on the Canadian and American
blues scene, she is an artist with a unique sound
who is keeping the authentic traditional blues
sound alive in the contemporary blues scene
today.
Kansas-born multi-instrumentalist Chris Whiteley
has been playing, writing and singing the blues
for over 30 years. As a teenager he met blues
legend Lonnie Johnson, and has since gone on
to play with many great blues artists including
Sunnyland Slim, Taj Mahal, and John Lee Hooker.
He has performed on over 200 recordings with
the likes of Leon Redbone and Blind John Davis.
In Canada, Whiteley has received the Blues with
a Feeling Award for lifetime achievement in the

the pleasure of playing with and/or recording
include P.J. Perry, Tommy Banks, the Edmonton
Folk Festival House Band, Ten Years After, Lionel

Doug won the 2014 Northlands Emerging

with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Jimmy Page &
Robert Plant).
Doug is back from a year in Paris and has
assembled an immensely talented band to pay
tribute to the very funky and hugely influential
Herbie Hancock. “Actual Proof” is one of the
tracks from “Thrust”, Hancock’s 1974 follow-up
to his breakthrough “Headhunters” album.
That period of Herbie’s career produced earthy,
funky, yet often harmonically and rhythmically
sophisticated music that ventures beyond
the outer limits of post-bop but still sounds
invigorating forty years later.

The Yardbird Suite Jazz Orchestra is the big band in residence at Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite.
The YSJO is dedicated to supporting the creative and professional music development of its
members and the awareness of big band jazz music through performance.
Guest conductor Dan Davis is a jazz saxophonist from Edmonton who earned his Masters in
Jazz Studies from the University of South Florida. While at USF, Dan was a member of three big
bands that rehearsed every week and performed every month. These bands included some
of the jazz scene’s finest players, including seasoned veterans of the Glenn Miller, Harry James,
and Woody Herman Orchestras. They readily shared their passion for big band music but were
quite exacting about how the music they loved should be played.
Dan also had the pleasure of meeting and studying with a plethora of renowned big band
composers, including Jim McNeely, Chuck Owen, Frank Foster and Tommy Goodman, some
of whose music will be featured in this show. The other repertoire will be drawn from exciting
new up and coming Canadian composers. By turns the music will be edgy and innovative,
bluesy and traditional, cerebral, and most importantly, swinging hard.
