Everyone has a healthy appreciaon

for posive tradions. Tradions add

rhythm and texture to our lives, bind

us together with others, give us some-

thing to look forward to, and simply

provide a good deal of joy and sas-

facon.

If you’re looking for inspiraon in cre-

ang an Independence Day to remem-

ber, below I share how I do the Fourth

of July.

Hang the Flag

First thing in

the morning,

just put it up,

think about

your freedoms

for a bit, and

get started with

the day.

Go to a Parade

Nothing like munching on a tasty pas-

try while listening to the float for a

local bank blast “I’m Proud to Be an

American” from their speakers. I love

it.

Make Some Ice Cream

Another small 4th of July tradion in

our family is making homemade ice

cream. Here’s the recipe.

Plain Vanilla Ice Cream

2 cups heavy cream (1 pint)

2 cups light cream (1 pint)

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1/8 tsp. salt

Pour cream directly into cream can.

Add sugar, vanilla, and salt. S r with a

wooden spoon or plas c spatula un l

the sugar is dissolved. Churn un l

creamy.

Hit the Fireworks Stands

As a kid, I remember being

overwhelmed by the selec-

on. Black cats, jumping

jacks, smoke bombs

(especially the ones that look

like grenades), and M-80s

were my go-to fireworks. I’m

a grown man now, but I’m

sll a sucker for a trip to the

fireworks stand, and of course, blow-

ing things up.

Go See a Blockbuster Movie

Fourth of July has historically been the

day film companies release some of

their biggest and most acon-packed

movies.

Light Up the Grill

Make burgers, dogs, brats, baked

beans, potato salad, and other deli-

cious summer delectables.

1 - 1943 - Taxes began to be withheld from paychecks.

4 - 1776 - The Declara-tion of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress.

5 - 1937 - Baseball great Joe DiMaggio hit his first grand slam.

17 - 1955 - Walt Dis-ney's Disneyland opened in Anaheim, Ca.

28 - 1914 - World War I began.

FAMOUS WORDS

Interesting Facts

You Never Knew

“Mistakes are the portals of discovery.”

James Joyce

Did you know . . . Sound

travels almost 5 mes faster

underwater than in air.

Did you know . . . You burn more calories sleeping than watching TV.

Did you know . . . Macada-

mia nuts are toxic to dogs.

Did you know . . . Ralph Lauren's original name was Ralph Lifshitz.

Did you know . . . The for-tune cookie was invented in San Francisco.

Whether you are a novice or sea-soned traveler, there are undoubt-edly many decisions that you have to make in planning your vacation. However, with the proper advice and knowledge, it becomes much simpler to make your travel ar-rangements. This article provides useful tips and suggestions that can help you plan your travels. You must plan ahead if you are go-ing to fly. Major airports are in big cities much of the time, so getting through traffic and to your gate on time can be a challenge. Have your bags packed well in advance. Be-fore your travel day, make sure all of your preparations are taken care of. When flying on a plane, you should plan ahead because an airline won't always be able to meet your basic needs, even when the flight lasts for many hours. A flight is often more comfortable when you bring along comfort items; such as a blanket, a pillow or your own set of headphones. You should also think about bringing some snacks with you. If traveling with children, keep a recent, color picture of them with you at all times, just in case they become lost. It can happen to even the most diligent parents. Easy ac-cess to a photograph of the child can facilitate any necessary search efforts if they get lost.

Travel can be a great way to edu-cate your family members. Travel-ing is a great way to teach your family about other cultures around the world, as long as you take the correct safety precautions. The best way to foster tolerance for other cultures in your children is to spend time in other countries with them. Taking a sleeping pill can make a red-eye flight much easier. Never take sleeping pills before your plane is up in the air, there may be a delay or some other unforeseen problem. Try folding your clothes in innova-tive ways that will take up less space. This can free up some space for other things you will need. When you want to maximize travel enjoyment, never forget about the weather. Before you settle on a des-tination, be sure to consider the in-fluence that the weather can have on your trip. Research the weather forecast at your vacation spot. Weather can ruin even the most thought out plans, and you may even put yourself in a dangerous position if you are not paying close attention to it. Traveling is quite a popular pas-time that most people will partici-pate in at some point in their lives. Information about travel can help you to enjoy the situation in a more relaxed manner. The tips presented in this article are going to come in handy sometime down the road.
