RABBI’S COLUMN

In the Jewish world, we are accustomed to the rhythms of a calendar year that marks its beginning in the fall. It is the blossoming days of fall in which we make our commitments for the year ahead. With the backdrop of the Noraim (High Holy Days) we make

our promises and commitments that we hope will carry us through the year, and help make it rich with engagement and meaning.

But human nature is such that we start to slack off within a few months. Just look at the world around us. By February first of the secular New Year, shiny new gym cards are languishing in pockets, and proponents of a "dry January" are imbibing at Happy Hour.

Fortunately for us, our Jewish calendar has built in a reset button for those commitments that we made to the community. In the dead of winter (the end of February in our case), our Jewish rhythm mandates Shabbat Shekalim. On this Sabbath, we read of each person over the age of 20 contributing half a shekel towards the construction and upkeep of the Tabernacle, which was used until the Temple found its permanent home in Jerusalem. The rich were not allowed to give more, and the poor were not allowed to give less, an ancient reminder that each contribution was equally valid and valued.

It is easy to make promises and commitments in the fall when everything is shiny and new. When Rosh HaShanah and its themes are so pervasive, they inspire us to make those promises with full hearts and all good intentions. But come February, it is not so easy. Shabbat Shekalim prompts us take advantage of the half a year that is still ahead of us. There is still time to reset and be involved in our community. This contribution was called mahatzit ha shekel, the half shekel. What will be your mahatzit ha shekel for the next part of the year—Will you volunteer in your child’s Religious School Class? Help make a shiva minyan? Greet newcomers on Shabbat mornings? Take a meal to a family with a new baby?

Just as the half-shekel was the way the ancient Israelites were counted in the desert, our contributions are part of the way that we are counted as members of the Chizuk Amuno family. We look forward to your continued engagement in our community, which strives to be sacred.

RABBI DEBI WECHSLER

Joining us on Shabbat Shira are the children of our KSDS choir and members of Kol Rinah with whom, together, we will celebrate the beauty of our heritage and the vitality of its ever evolving and expanding musical traditions.

Melody and music are inspired in many ways. Sometimes, through the roller coaster of human emotions - “Can’t Help Falling in Love” (Elvis Presley, 1961). In response to life’s challenges – “My Way” (Frank Sinatra, 1961). Nature inspires music – “The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music” (Julie Andrews, 1965). The power of music, often set to biblical passages, fuels mankind’s search for spirituality, like Handel’s, oratoriah “The Messiah” (1741) or perhaps Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (1984). On Shabbat Shira we will, together, share, explore and sing a new musical setting to the familiar words “Oseh Shalom Bimromav”. It was composed in response to a request by then Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth, Lord Jonathan Sacks, to acknowledge Israel’s 60th anniversary. Written by Stephen Levey, it was recorded on 30th April 2008 at a North London studio and “continues to build momentum as one of the modern Jewish anthems of our time.” Upon first hearing it, I was moved by its elegant simplicity of musical line, how it builds “emotional tension, while transitioning through three distinct movements, and happily, its setting in a major key!”

We are confident that after its Baltimore “premiere” here in our own Congregation, Chizuk Amuno, it will become an integral part of our rich musical liturgy.

We look forward to sharing our Shabbat Shira celebration with you, which this year, will also feature a surprise “Reed Sea Rap.”

CAMP DAVID, 40+ YEARS LATER: STRATEGY, PEACE, AUTONOMY

Tuesday February 18, 7 p.m.

In September 1978, President Jimmy Carter, Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and President Anwar Sadat set the stage for Egyptian-Israeli peace a few months later. How and why did it happen and what is its continuing legacy?

Prof. Jeremy Pressman, who spent three months in 2019 in Oslo working on a Camp David history project, will share his insights as well as some of the latest scholarship.

Jeremy Pressman is an associate professor of political science and director of Middle East Studies at the University of Connecticut. In spring 2019, he was a Fulbright Fellow at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. He is the author of the forthcoming book, The Sword is Not Enough: Arabs, Israelis, and the Limits of Military Force (Manchester University Press, 2020).

GORDON, who will speak to us about his Gidon Aronson thrillers - In The Name Of God and Confluence.

Steve Gordon, the creator of the Gidon Aronson thriller series, has been writing stories since Junior High School. His professional writing credits include a memoir for Good Housekeeping and television series work for Maryland Public Television. His feature film script, Rapid Eye Movement, was accepted by the Independent Feature Film Market in New York.

Mr. Gordon’s crime drama novel series began with In the Name of God, and has continued with Confluence. The series follows the exploits of Gidon Aronson, an American who moved to Israel to serve in the IDF Special Forces, but has returned to the United States due to post-traumatic stress. Now that he is back in the U.S. (and primarily Baltimore), he is rebuilding his life, but also finds himself drawn into a series of mysteries that, in the end, return him to Israel for their conclusion.

Mr. Gordon, in addition to working on the series, teaches Geography, Ancient World Cultures, and American History at the Krieger Schechter Day School. He is also concluding work on the third Gidon Aronson thriller.

GOLDSMITH EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER AND THE CENTER FOR JEWISH EDUCATION CONNECTORS JOIN FORCESIn 2012, The Center for Jewish Education (CJE) established the Community Connectors Program in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. This program was created to help Jewish families with preschool aged children connect with one another. The goal is to create events and get-togethers organized by the Connectors and to grow awareness of local Jewish institutions like Goldsmith and Chizuk Amuno. Through the community connectors, Jewish families are becoming more engaged within their community. For more information, check out their facebook page at www.facebook.com/CJEBaltimore.

TWEENS TALK

Students in the fourth grade at Rosenbloom Religious School (RRS) are fortunate to participate in “Tweens Talk,” a unique Israel program sponsored by the Center for Jewish Education in Baltimore. The Tweens Talk program, a program pairing students in Baltimore with peers from Ashkelon, Baltimore’s sister city in Israel, is now in its second year here at RRS. Several times throughout the year, students have an opportunity to connect with their peers through letters, video conferences, and cultural exchange. Earlier this year, we learned about the Ethiopian Israeli holiday, Sigd, and taught our friends in Ashkelon about American Thanksgiving. Students have enjoyed getting to know their peers and we are excited to see them continue to build these friendships. Over Skype and email, the fourth-grade students begin a friendship with their new Israeli friends.

This exciting program is sponsored by the Baltimore Ashkelon Partnership.

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES:

HELP ASYLUM-SEEKERS ADJUST TO LIFE IN THE USAGH2 (GILEAD HOUSE GEMILUT HASADIM PARTNERSHIP

From a recent letter sent by the Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance (ERICA):

“…Two years ago, ERICA and St. Mark’s on the Hill Church launched Gilead House, a program of housing and community support for asylum seekers based at St. Mark’s beautiful rectory. Nearby Chizuk Amuno Congregation joined the partnership, providing a tremendous font of volunteer energy. This past summer, we witnessed the first fruits of our concentrated effort. Three of the initial four residents have been able to move on, having had the time and support to obtain steady, remunerative employment ... This kind of early employment success is very unusual for newly arrived humanitarian immigrants, and you helped make it possible." Volunteer Steve Hoffman reflects on his experience volunteering for our Gilead House project:

“One of the residents of Gilead House, 18 year-old Bryan, a native of Guatemala, needed transportation to and from Owings Mills High School for soccer practice several days per week. It has been fun and rewarding to help this young man settle into his new life.

Bryan was somewhat isolated at Gilead House because when he first arrived no other Spanish speakers lived in the house. My ability to speak Spanish was extremely minimal and Bryan’s English was nonexistent. I prepared for our times together by using Google Translate to make lists of words and short phrases in Spanish. Since almost all of our time together was spent in the car, only what I could memorize beforehand was useful and so most of the driving time passed in silence.

Bringing Bryan home from a practice after a very hot day, I resorted to a word I remembered, helado, ice cream. We stopped at Rita’s – our nods and smiles back and forth said all that was necessary as we enjoyed some helado cones. We've hosted Bryan for dinner when my children have visited - they both, along with my son-in-law, speak Spanish. Bryan consumed large portions of food (like any healthy teenager) and participated in a friendly game of picture Thanksgiving Bingo. He seemed to truly be enjoying these visits, and I look forward to more time together and building our relationship.

We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers. The newest resident is very enthusiastic about getting to know Baltimore and living life in America. If you would like to take him to a movie, a museum, or any type of Baltimore experience, please let us know.

SISTERHOOD JUDAICA SHOP The Sisterhood Judaica Shop has a long and rich history – in fact we are celebrating our 60th anniversary this year! Sisterhoods started opening shops many years ago (before the Internet!) to provide synagogue members with a way to purchase Judaica and create a movement to make your Jewish home beautiful. While many Judaica shops have closed, we are fortunate to have our Judaica Shop strong and viable. This is because of YOU and our wonderful volunteers! Everyone involved in the Judaica Shop is a volunteer and there is no paid staff.

ALL profits from our Shop benefit our Synagogue and Schools!

We give countless hours to make sure the shop is full of inventory, inviting to shop in, and open during hours that are convenient. Hanukkah was a great example of many times when the shop was closed, and our volunteers (and synagogue staff!) pitched in to open the shop to help out someone who needed a last-minute item.

Have you had a chance to browse in the Judaica Shop lately? You may be surprised by the wide variety of items we have to offer. So, stop by and say hi this month and show us a little LOVE. If you see something online, be sure to ask if we can get it for you instead. Many times, it would be the same price or even less. Your time will not be wasted, and your support is greatly appreciated!

Plus, you might want to take advantage of our February SALE:

JEWELRY SALE - TAKE 25% OFF ALL JEWELRY!

SHOP HOURS: Sunday & Friday 10-Noon | Monday through Thursday 10-Noon, 2-6 p.m. If schools and/or synagogue are closed so are we.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR JUDAICA SHOP!
