For those students NOT doing their liturgy on the
Mystical Communion, you will be doing a digital photo
mosaic that combines the sometimes competing images
of “People of God” and “Body of Christ”
(a Both-And Approach)
Recall that the Body of Christ image focuses on how
each of us is an important member of a “mystical” body
of Christ present here on earth
However, it is often used today to support a strong role of the hierarchy functioning
as the “head” of the body
If overemphasized, the Body of Christ image can lead to a divinization of the Church
Recall that the People of God image was the dominant
image of Vatican II
Recall that it is often connected with the ideal of pilgrimage (Pilgrim People)
Recall that it is favored by those who push for
continuing reform in the church by granting larger
roles in ministry and decision-making to women
and laypeople
If overemphasized it can become anti-institutional
For this project, students are to gather images that reflect BOTH the “Body of Christ” and “People of God” images
From these images, students are to create a mosaic that reveals a larger image (the example to the left reveals Christ, but the student’s
submission should be more symbolic of the Mystical
Communion model)
Specific Requirements
1. Students must choose at least 30 unique images that represent the Mystical Communion Model (15 Body of Christ, 15 People of God). All images must be free of watermarks
2. Of the 30 images chosen, at least 10 must be created by the student. This could include digital photos or scanned drawings (5 Body of Christ, 5 People of God)
3. The revealed Mosaic Image must reflect the Mystical Communion.
4. Students must create a two table of ALL images used in this project. In one column, students will insert each image. In the adjacent column, students must provide a detailed description as to how the image relates to the Mystical Communion as either the Body of Christ or the People of God. EACH DESCRIPTION SHOULD BE A 2-4 SENTENCES EACH! (see next slide for example)
