Mexican Tarahumara woman wins 50km race wearing sandals23 May 2017 Latin America & Caribbean

A 22 year old woman from Mexico's Tarahumara indigenous community has won a 50km (31 miles) ultra marathon wearing sandals.

María Lorena Ramírez defeated 500 other runners from 12 countries in the female category of the Ultra Trail Cerro Rojo in Puebla, in central Mexico.

She ran without any professional gear, and her pair of sandals was reportedly made from recycled tyre rubber.

The Tarahumara are famous for being excellent runners. The race was held on 29 April, but only now has word about her victory spread.

Tarahumara running secrets Marathon runner Christopher McDougall wrote about the Tarahumara's ability to run extremely long distances in his book Born to Run. He found that the Tarahumara: Tra-ditionally live in widely dispersed settlements, covering extremely long distances to visit neighbour-ing villages, hunt and trade run in groups, offering each other support and teaching youngsters to pace themselves. See running as a fine art, which forms part of religious ceremonies as well as tra-ditional games and competitions in which men, women and children participate. They consume large amounts of corn beer, which is high in carbohydrates, to stay hydrated. They run in thin homemade sandals called huaraches or barefoot. Apart from the sandals, María Lorena Ramírez wore a skirt and a scarf in the race. She did not have any professional training. She finished the race in seven hours and three minutes, and was awarded 6,000 pesos ($320; £250).

Reports said her job is herding goats and cattle, walking some 10/15km every day. Last year, she came second in the 100km category of the Caballo Blanco ultramarathon, in Chihuahua.

Race reports/Upcoming race information

Comrades 2017 – Josias van der MerweMarix, thank you again for your support at the halfway mark it was really encouraging to see you and to hear Hennie say that the second half is much easier than the first, those words echoed in my mind for a long time after halfway. I knew I had to push and so tried all the way in the first half not to run too slowly. I saw Charles and Josh just before halfway and it was nice going up Botha’s Hill with them, but then just after Botha’s Hill I stopped to do something, it might have been a water point, then when I looked for them they disappeared so I thought they went ahead, but I never saw them again. I got to halfway at 5:10 and realised that I was a little bit behind schedule. I wanted to be at 42 km to go with 6 hours left, but I only got there at 5:50, so 20 min behind schedule, but I knew I could try to make up 5 min every hour, so from there onwards I had to push all the way. Somewhere in the Comrades book that we got they described the route and were talking about walking with purpose (or something like that) and suggested that when you walk you must walk for 100 paces and then run for 200, that is when you are going up a hill. Anyway, somewhere the 100 paces got mixed up in my brain and I remembered 10, so I tried to have a 10 paces walk whenever I felt tired and sometimes pushed it to 20 or 25 paces, eish, a lot of counting! With all the counting I managed to run up Pollys. Just before getting to Polly’s I was walking next to a young American lady and I told her my aim and she chirped: “I believe in you!”. Another one of those phrases that kept me going along with Hennie’s word that the second half is much easier. Then finally at the top of Polly’s I saw that there was enough time, what a relief. I must say it is such a wonderful feeling of gratefulness when you run into the final stretch. With all the prayer support and support along the way you realise that what seemed so difficult became possible.

So I’m sorry I never made it to the tent, went to fetch my tog bag, and then tried to find the tent and saw that the buses were soooo close, and remembered how long it took the previous time to get go-ing from Maritzburg to Durban in the bus, and that was when I decided to stop my search for the tent! Hopefully next year. Thanks again for all your support, I really appreciate it.

Training/Health snippets

Small WondersMini nutrition resolutions will improve your diet and boost your performance.By Ashley Gartland; Health-conscious and goal-oriented, many runners start the New Year with a long list of well-intended diet resolutions—like giving up all dessert or forgoing fat. But large, sweeping goals are often unrealistic and impossible to achieve, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and defeated before you even begin. The more empowering route? Make smaller, more manageable changes that will keep you motivated and reshape the way you approach food. "When you decide to train for a marathon, you wouldn't run all those miles right off the bat," says Keri Gans, M.S., R.D., author of The Small Change Diet. "In the same way, hitting short-term nutrition goals will help you achieve the long-term ones."

EAT THREE FOOD GROUPS AT BREAKFASTResearch shows that breakfast eaters keep off more weight than those who skip the meal. But many morning foods, like cereal, are high in carbs and not much else—which won't keep hunger at bay for long. Make sure your breakfast includes lean protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Fat helps you feel satisfied, while carbs provide quick energy to jump-start your body after a nightlong fast. Protein helps build and repair muscle and is slow-digesting, so it keeps you full.

JOIN THE MEATLESS MONDAY MOVEMENTThe average American eats about eight ounces of meat daily, which is roughly 45 percent more than the USDA recommends. Eating too much fatty meat increases your saturated fat intake, and increases your risk for heart disease. "By going meatless one day a week, you can cut back on saturated fat while incorporating other nutrient-dense, plant-based protein sources into your diet," says Marissa Lippert, M.S., R.D., "including edamame, tofu, nuts, beans, and quinoa." The last two are particularly runner-friendly since they also contain slow-releasing complex carbohydrates that supply energy for runs.

FILL HALF YOUR PLATE WITH PRODUCERunners who don't meet their daily fruit and vegetable quota are missing out big time. These nutrient-rich foods provide your body with plant chemicals that keep your cells healthy and reduce inflammation, says Kristine Clark, Ph.D., R.D., director of sports nutrition at Penn State University. By literally filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables, you leave less room for higher-calorie options. Plus, they're rich in fiber, which helps lower cholesterol, control blood sugar, and fill you up so you're less likely to overeat.

GET MORE CALCIUM (THINK BEYOND MILK)A study published last year in The Journal of Nutrition found that 38 percent of Americans aren't getting enough calcium, a nutrient essential for keeping bones strong and reducing fracture risk. Since milk is a rich source, try ways of getting more of it: Include a glass of fat-free milk as part of your post run recovery snack, stir fat-free milk into soups, or use powdered varieties for a calcium boost that won't alter the dish's flavor. "Mix it into spaghetti sauce or add a half cup to smoothies,"

5

Page 6: This n That - Agape 06-12.doc  · Web viewDesalination of salt water now only needs 2kWh per cubic metre (at 0.25 cents) We don’t have scarce water in most places, only scarce

says Clark. Sneak in more nondairy sources, too, such as dark greens, canned salmon with the bones (they're edible and provide the bulk of the calcium), tofu, and fortified fruit juices and soy milk.UPGRADE YOUR SALAD GREENSDiversifying your picks beyond standard iceberg and romaine can help you supercharge your salad. Dark, leafy greens like kale contain fiber, calcium, vitamin C, and iron, which help power aerobic activity. Radicchio, arugula, and endive provide folate and calcium, while watercress contains beta-carotene, which may help protect against heart disease and cancer. "These greens add variety to your diet, and studies show that a more varied diet decreases mortality," says sports nutritionist Cassie Dimmick, M.S., R.D.

DITCH THE PACKAGED DIET FOODSLow-fat versions of your favorite foods, such as cookies and potato chips, may appear healthier than their full-fat counterparts, but they're often high in added sugars and sodium. Low-fat claims tempt people into eating more calories, and also lead many to increase their view of an appropriate serving size. "Runners need to get back to eating smaller amounts of real food," says Dimmick. "One rich piece of dark chocolate can satisfy a craving a lot better than three low-fat brownies."

REDEFINE DESSERT BY FOCUSING ON FRUITIt's okay to indulge, but runners can do it in a way that will provide their bodies with performance-boosting nutrients. Go for a fruit-based dessert, which are naturally sweet and have immune-boosting antioxidants, says Dimmick. Try a baked apple with cinnamon and top with a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt. Or melt one tablespoon of semisweet dark chocolate chips and drizzle over strawberries. You'll benefit from the inflammation-reducing antioxidants in both foods.

EAT better: Eating high-fiber foods—such as a salad or a bowl of mixed fruit—at the start of a meal helps you consume fewer total calories overall.

Calorie CutbacksSimple moves to help maintain your weight

LIGHTEN YOUR LATTECoffee drinks can have 60 calories worth of added sugar from the syrup alone. Reduce the number of pumps of syrup and use fat-free milk.

KEEP SALADS HEALTHYChoose low-fat and fat-free salad dressings that have no more than 70 calories, six grams of fat, and one gram of saturated fat per serving.

CHOOSE A SMARTER SAUCEJarred pasta sauce can contain the same amount of sugar as three Chips Ahoy! cookies. Look for fewer than six grams of sugar per half-cup.

PICK A BETTER SPREADJams and jellies are almost pure sugar. Swap in low-sugar jelly or no-sugar-added apple butter for regular and save half the calories.

REDUCE LIQUID CALORIESCalories from sports drinks, sodas, juices, and alcohol add up quickly. Aim for no more than 150 calories from beverages per day, and stick to water on short runs.

Your thought for the week

Open your arms to change, but don’t give up your values!6

Your smile for the week

An elderly gentleman... had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again."

The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"

====

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suit-case at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him. "I don't know," he said. "She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."

Something to ponder over / something spiritual

Interesting excerpts from a recent interview with the MD of Daimler BenzIn a recent interview, the MD of Daimler Benz said their biggest competitors are no longer other car companies, but Tesla (obviously) as well as Apple, Google, Amazon et al.

He went on to say that there have always been three constants: Death, Taxes, and CHANGE.

Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5 to 10 years.

Uber is just a software tool: they don’t own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world.

AirBNB is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don’t own any properties.

Artificial Intelligence computers become exponentially better in understanding the world.

This year a computer beat the best “GO” player in the world – 10 years earlier than expected.

In the USA young lawyers already struggle to get jobs: because with IBM Watson you can get legal advice (so far more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% plus accuracy, compared with only 70% accuracy when done by humans. Something to think about, if you are studying law. There will probably be 90% less lawyers in the future – only specialists will remain.

Watson already helps nurses diagnose cancer 4 times more accurately than human nurses. Face-book now has pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans can.

In 2030 computers will become more intelligent than humans.

Back to the car industry: Autonomous cars, we expect that by 2019 the first self-driving cars will ap-pear for the public. Around 20230 the complete industry will start to be disrupted you won’t want to own a car anymore. You will call a car with your phone; it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it – only pay for the distance you were driven, and, can be productive while on the journey. Kids who are now 10 years old, will probably never get a driver’s licence, or own a car.

7

Page 8: This n That - Agape 06-12.doc  · Web viewDesalination of salt water now only needs 2kWh per cubic metre (at 0.25 cents) We don’t have scarce water in most places, only scarce

City faces will change, as 90 – 95% less cars will need to park there. Former parking lots can be changed into parks.

1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide; one accident for every 60000 miles driven. With autonomous cars this will drop to one accident every 6000000 miles - translating to a million lives saved every year.

Most car companies will probably become bankrupt. Traditional car companies try the evolutionary approach, and just build a better car, while the Tech companies will apply the revolutionary ap-proach and build a computer on wheels. Many engineers fro Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Volk-swagen are completely terrified of Tesla.

Insurance companies will have massive trouble, because without accidents, insurance will become 100 times cheaper. Their car insurance model will disappear.

Real estate will change. Because if you can work while you commute, people will move further away from the cities, to live in more beautiful and peaceful neighborhoods.

Electric cars will become mainstream around 2020. Cities will be less noisy because of electric cars.

Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean. Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, and we are starting to see the burgeoning impact. Last year more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil energy. Energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid to prevent competition from solar installations, but that can’t last. Technology will take care of that strategy. With cheap electricity comes cheap and abundant water.

Desalination of salt water now only needs 2kWh per cubic metre (at 0.25 cents) We don’t have scarce water in most places, only scarce drinking water. Imagine what would be possible if anyone could have as much clean water as he wants, at nearly no cost.

The Tricorder X price will be announced later this year. There are companies who build a medical device called the Tricorder (from Star Trek) that works with your phone. It can take your retina scan, your blood sample, and you can breathe into it. It then analyses 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly every disease. In a few years, it will be cheap enough for everybody to afford this world class medical analysis. Goodbye medical establishment in its current form.

The price of the cheapest 3D printer came down from $1800 to 400 within 10 years, while at the same time becoming 100 times faster. All major shoe companies are already 3D printing shoes. Some spare aeroplane parts are already 3D printed at remote airports. The space station now has a 3D printer that eliminates for the large number of spare parts they had to keep in the past.

By the end of the year, new smart phones will have 3D scanning capabilities. You can then 3D scan your foot, and 3D print a perfect shoe at home.

In China they have already 3D printed and built a complete 6-storey office building. By 2027, 10% of everything that’s being produced will be 3D printed.

If you think of a niche you want to go into, ask yourself; ”In the future, do you think we will still have that” And if the answer is “yes” ask yourself how you can make it happen sooner. If it doesn’t work with your phone, forget it. Any idea designed for success in the 20th century, is doomed for failure in the 21st century.

70 to 80% of known jobs will disappear in the next 20 years. There will be a lot of new jobs, but it is not clear if there will be enough new jobs in such a small space of time.

There will be a $100 agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their field, instead of manually working in it all day.

8

Page 9: This n That - Agape 06-12.doc  · Web viewDesalination of salt water now only needs 2kWh per cubic metre (at 0.25 cents) We don’t have scarce water in most places, only scarce

Aeroponics will need much less water. The first petri dish-produced veal is now available and will be cheaper than cow-produced veal by the end of next year. At the moment 30% of all agricultural sur-faces are used for cattle. Imagine if we didn’t need that space anymore.

There are several startups that will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more pro-tein than meat. It will be labelled as “alternative protein source” because most people still reject the idea of eating insects.

Oh, and Bitcoin may even become the default reserve currency…. Of the world!

By 2020 70% of all people will own a smart phone That means that everyone has the same access to world class education. In First World countries, everybody can use Khan Academy for everything a child needs to learn at school. There have already been releases of software in Indonesia, and soon there will be releases in Arabic, Suaheli, and Chinese. I think we should give the English app for free to all of Africa, so that they all could become fluent in English. That could happen for the children in a year and a half….
