Year 5’s Handel Project

The Year 5 Handel Project culminated in a final concert at Mount Stewart Junior School on

Friday, 8th July. Oliver Goldsmith blew everyone away with their powerful singing of songs

from the opera ‘Ariodante’. They also performed a coronation anthem for Prince William which they

composed with the help of composer Edwin Hillier. We were delighted with some Baroque Dance and

live backing music performed by Baroque music specialists on the harpsichord and lute.

Music Showcase Week and OGPS Proms in the Playground

Musicians in KS2 had an opportunity to show friends and family what they have been practising all year

during our Music Showcase Week. Many of these children have been busy preparing for exams and

their hard work has definitely paid off. The week was rounded off with a series of OGPS Proms in the

Playground concerts. The concerts really proved the quality of musicianship within our school—well

done everyone!

OGPS Junior Choir—Brent Make Music 2016

The OGPS Junior Choir took part in Brent makes Music at the world famous venue

Wembley Arena on 6th July. They were a part of the massed primary choir consisting of

over 1000 children from 37 primary schools in Brent. The evening highlighted the talents of

young performers in the borough and the musical talent of our schools. Oliver Goldsmith also

had children performing in the Brent Intermediate Choir, Brent Junior Orchestra and Brent Gui-

tar Ensemble. It was great to see some of our past pupils now performing in the Senior Brent Or-

chestra and Brent Concert Band as well. It was an inspiring evening for all attendees.

Junior Orchestra– The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall

Introducing our OGPS Junior Orchestra! The Junior Orchestra is currently

made up of 30 children from years 4, 5 and 6 who take lessons on a

musical instrument. To help make our orchestra the best it can be we

require all children taking lessons on their instrument for a term or

longer in Years 4, 5 and 6 to take part. The orchestra rehearses after

school on Wednesdays. We will be performing song classic rock hits and classical favourites at

the Performing Arts concert and OGPS Proms in the Playground.

Events in Music for the 2016-2017 school year:

Reception & Year 1— Look forward to visits from the Orchestra for the Age of

Enlightenment and a concert in a central London venue.

Year 2—A trip to Wigmore Hall in October to hear Ensemble 360° perform the story of ‘Sir Scallywag and the

Battle of Stinky Bottom’

Year 3—Aloha! All children in year 3 will learn to play the ukulele, read music and play as an ensemble.

Year 4—Wider Opportunities Trumpet: All Year 4 will have trumpet lessons in the Autumn Term.

Year 5—Discover London’s classical music heritage by taking part in the Handel Project and learning the record-

er a popular Baroque instrument.

OGPS Junior Choir— We will prepare for many performances throughout the year but especially the Brent Pri-

mary School Choir of the Year Competition in the Spring term! Auditions in September.

Learning from Professional Musicians

During the summer term, a professional flautist Alena Lugovkina gave a presentation

to Year 2 children. She played some classical and popular pieces for them, inspiring

them to move and dance as she played. We even heard some beatboxing through the flute

and the all popular ’Let it Go’ from Frozen. As it was World Book Day, we happened to have

some of our own princesses in the room! We are looking forward to continuing our link with

the Worshipful Company of Musicians when another musician will visit the school in the

Autumn term.

Instrumental Tuition for September 2016

Learning to play an instrument is a gift for life. Thank you to all the parents and carers who

completed the instrumental lessons form and signed their child up for lessons in September

2016. We are a very musical school, and learning music is a great way to help with all other ar-

eas of learning!

*If you have passed an instrumental exam we want to celebrate your achievement! Bring in
