Call for Applications2001-2002 ACUNS Dissertation Award

As part of the effort to invest in the next generation of scholars and with financial supportfrom the Ford Foundation, the Academic Council on the United Nations System hasestablished a competitive award program for a social scientist or the equivalent for legalscholars. This award can be used independently or in conjunction with another fellowship.Subsequent to review by an independent selection committee, this award will be disbursedin July 2001 to cover the period 1 July 2001 - 30 June 2002.

A completed application will include a 3-to4 page description of the applicant's dissertationresearch proposal, curriculum vitae, and at least one letter of recommendation from theapplicant's doctoral mentor or a faculty member who knows his/her wort It is the soleresponsibility of the applicant to ensure that his/her dossier is complete by the applicationdeadline. Completed applications must be postmarked by 15 January 2001.

HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTION AND THE

ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONSProgram

The Academic Council on the UnitedNations System (ACUNS) and the AmericanSociety of International Law (ASIL) aresponsoring the eleventh in a series of summerworkshops on international organization studiesto be held at the University of Namibia,Windhoek, Namibia, from 5 August to 18August 2001. This workshop is designedspecifically for advanced graduate students,post-doctoral scholars, young internationalrelations and law school faculty, lawyers andpractitioners from policy circles and civilsociety.

The purposes of this workshop are toencourage new directions in internationalorganizations and related legal studies, establishand strengthen contacts amongst legal andinternational relations scholars and UNpractitioners, and stimulate teaching andresearch in diese subjects.

The 2001 workshop will be directed byCharlotte Ku, Executive Director of ASIL,Washington, D.C., and Clement Adibe,international relations professor at DePaulUniversity, Chicago, Illinois.

The theme for this year's workshop is"Humanitarian Intervention and the Role ofInternational Organizations." The issue ofintervention has been the subject of heateddebates at the United Nations and within theinternational community. When mustsovereignty be respected and when shouldinternational organizations intervene in times ofhuman crisis? What roles do local and globalgovernance, civil society, and financialinstitutions play during those times? Issues ofhuman rights, refugees, post-conflict recon-struction, peacekeeping, democratization,economic aid, the use of force and other

relevant topics will be focal points of theworkshop. Given that most crises haveoccurred on the African continent, having thisworkshop in Africa will engender a moremeaningful and sober understanding ofhumanitarian crises.

The 2001 workshop will explore theconcepts and instruments that are needed tohandle the challenges of humanitarian crises,new understandings of law and governance thatmight be required in the face of these challengesand the responsibilities of the UN, NGOs, andother regional and international organizations.

The workshop will consist of presentationsby and interaction with experts in the field,exercises and discussions focusing on developinggreater links between academics and practitio-ners, skills development in teaching, researchand writing on international organization andparticipant presentations.

Published since 1951 by the International Political Science Association (all backvolumes are available), the Abstracts is a major source of bibliographic information inpolitical science. It publishes abstracts of articles in specialized and non specialized per-iodicals, including major yearbooks. Articles in English are abstracted in English; those inother languages (about one fifth of the total) are abstracted in French, with all titles transla-ted into English. In 1999 it published 7,434 abstracts from nearly 1,000 journals, in six is-sues. Each issue carries a detailed subject index (cumulative for all previous issues of thesame year) and a list of the periodicals examined. The final issue of each volume also pro-vides an author index.
