•Dr. Beyonka Wider, program consultant in the Office of Career and Technology Education (CATE), has been selected as a 2016 Region II Fellow by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). Each year, ACTE selects five representatives, one from each ACTE region, to develop their leadership skills. The ACTE National Leadership Fellowship Program provides participants with the leadership development, policy knowledge and professional development that future leaders will need to succeed. The term of the fellowship is one calendar year (January-December).

•Caroline Carson, art teacher at Rosewood Elementary School, represented Richland One and South Carolina at the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Convention in Phoenix, Arizona on November 14. She presented a session entitled “Foundations of Global Awareness: A Multicultural Gifted and Talented ELA Interdisciplinary Thematic Unit of Study” to an audience of K-6 gifted educators from across the nation. The curriculum unit is designed to move gifted and talented students from past to present and from local culture to world cultures by analyzing, informational texts, historical, realistic and traditional literature, historical documents, video clips, music and art. Mrs. Carson has developed curriculum for the Advanced Academic Programs for approximately 15 years. She also presented at the College of William and Mary’s Curriculum Summer Network last year.

•Bradley Elementary School (Elizabeth Russell) and Lower Richland High School (Constantina Green) are among the five Richland County schools selected to receive funding for conservation projects through the Conservation Education Mini-Grant and Clean Streams Columbia Programs sponsored by the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District and the City of Columbia. These award programs provided up to $250 in support of environmental efforts at Richland County schools.

•Hand Middle School, in partnership with Heyward Career and Technology, held its first Career Café’ for eighth-grade students on November 23. A Career Café is a modified take on a traditional career fair. Students completed a Career Interest Inventory and identified their top three career clusters. Students visited various career clusters set up in classrooms where they learned about education requirements, career possibilities and trends in the workforce related to the clusters. More than 35 local businesses and agencies participated in the Career Café.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, consider attending the “Stay Fit While You Sit” Workshop. In this free workshop you will learn simple stretches and exer-cises that can be done at work or at home to offset the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
