For whatever reason, a lot of people have a very subjective view of God. Many see Him

as stern and judgmental, incorrectly assuming He has many hard to keep rules. What they

forget or fail to realise is that God’s rules are for our own good, and not a burden at all.

Have a day of rest? Wonderful! Eat yummy fruits and vegetables? No problem! Look after

the plants and cute little animals? Happy to! Love others and treat them with kindness?

Great idea!

There is however, one lesser-known rule that humans are fond of forgetting. “God’s rule

is, One day at a time” TMK 231. A great rule, but a little harder to put into practice.

We find it hard to be in the moment when talking with a friend, let alone focusing on

today. We love creating elaborate plans for the future, then get bent out of shape when

circumstances change as they inevitably do. We love worrying about tomorrow, things

out of our control, and other stuff we have not been promised.

God would like us to concentrate on today. Recognise both temptations and

opportunities. Give people your full attention. Find happiness in the little things like

flowers in the garden, the sun on your face, and a cool drink of water. Don’t wallow in the

past or fret about the future. God has only promised us enough strength, wisdom and

help for today. So, when we borrow troubles from the future (that may never come), we

overload and set ourselves up for failure. God is good, God is wise, and His rule is: One

day at a time.

“This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” Psalm 118:24.
