3263 Painting 2, Grades 10, 11, 12This advanced course allows students to develop greater command of technical skills with watercolor, acrylic and mixed media. 3255 Sculpture, Grades 10, 11, 12This course provides three-dimensional expression in a range of media and techniques. Selected artists, art history, criticism, aesthetics, and studio processes will be used. Evaluations are aligned to the Ohio Visual Art Standards and can include rubrics, checklists, critiques, self and peer reviews, reading and writing in the content area, and vocabulary testing. Prerequisite: Introduction to Art. One semester; ½ credit.

3256 Virtual Studio : Exploring Art with the Computer , Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This one-semester course explores selected artists, art history, criticism, aesthetics, and studio creativity through the design of computer artworks. Students will use PhotoShop CS2 to build original artworks by selectively using tools and images of their own and from the Internet. Some basic graphic design will be included. An approved AUP form is required. Evaluations are aligned to the Ohio Visual Art Standards and can include rubrics, checklists, critiques, self and peer reviews, reading and writing in the content area, and vocabulary testing. One semester; ½ credit.

3258 Portfolio, Grades 11, 12Students will develop an admissions portfolio for college application requirements. A concentration in one media and techniques will be included in the portfolio work. Course involves visitations to area colleges and universities, lectures by recruiters, completion of college applications and participation in regional, state and national exhibitions. Permission of instructor required. Full year; 1 credit.

3259 Portfolio II: Senior Independent Study, Grade 12Independent study is available to those students who are in the process of developing their admissions portfolio for college application and scholarship. Students must have successfully completed the requirements for Portfolio I during their junior year. Students opting for Portfolio II must be prepared to submit to the instructor a proposal for advanced individual study concentrating on studio production. Self-evaluation and instructor evaluation will be ongoing in preparation for submission of the portfolio for college admissions officers. Permission of instructor required. Full year; 1 credit.

This course concentrates on 3D design concepts and principles. Transfer of 2D layouts to prototypes in the area of industrial and graphic design are introduced. Selected artists, art history, criticism, aesthetics and studio processes are studied. 3268 Cultural Arts and Crafts, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This is an interdisciplinary course focusing on the relationship between art and past cultural traditions and activity, such as ceremony, practice, experience and interactions throughout time.  Students will interpret the historical and cultural contexts of the arts and have opportunities to problem solve and discuss issues across disciplinary boundaries.  Students will create unique artworks applying artistic skills and knowledge of cultural themes and approaches. Prerequisite: Introduction to Art. One semester; ½ credit

1153 Business Communications Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This course covers subject matter and experiences in public speaking and provides the organizational skills necessary to produce oral presentations and written documents. A wide spectrum of studies and activities from the scientific (voice science) through the humanistic (rhetoric) will be taught. Behavioral science (group dynamics) as well as the artistic (oral interpretation of literature) will also be taught. Multiple oral presentations both formal and informal are required. One semester; ½ credit.

3610 Financial Literacy, Grades 11, 12This class is required for all 11th grade students.This course will increase students’ awareness of financial matters as well as the ability to manage money. Students will learn money management techniques in the areas of budgeting, savings, checking, credit, investing, and insurance. The class focuses on real world problem solving and projects that will allow students to successfully navigate their financial life during and after high school. One semester; ½ credit.

3615 Advanced Standing Financial Literacy   Grades 11, 12Students will receive 3 credit hours from Ohio Dominican UniversityThis class will fulfill the 11th grade Whitehall Graduation requirement.This course will increase a student’s awareness of financial matters as well his or her ability to handle money wisely for the future.  Emphasis on money management techniques (bank accounts), financial record keeping, budgeting, tax planning, consumer credit, making buying decisions, purchasing insurance, investments choices, and retirement and estate planning.  This course will help prepare students for financial decisions they will face during and after high school.  One semester; 3 Credit Hours (ODU) & ½ credit (WYHS).

Requirements for Advanced Standing Financial Literacy: 2.3 GPA and an 18 on the ACT or SAT equivalent. 2.75 GPA if you have not taken the ACT or SAT. $40 per credit hour ($120 for class), This is waived for any student who completes the

application for free and reduced lunch status and is found to meet eligibility requirements.

3651 Business Law, Grades 11, 12This course introduces the legal system-What is Law? Lawmaking (legislatures, agencies, the federal court system, the Ohio Judicial System); citizen advocacy-lobbying and voting; methods of settling disputes-negotiation, mediation, and arbitration; The court system at the federal and state levels; lawyers, crime in America-nature of crimes, gangs, substance abuse, victims of crimes; introduction to criminal law; crimes against the person; crimes against property; defense to crimes; the criminal justice process; and introduction to contracts. Current law-related public issues such as antitrust, computer crime, gangs, guns and others are discussed. The course includes experiences within the community including a field trip to The Ohio Supreme Court, and discussions with lawyers and police officers. One semester; ½ credit.

3652 Employability, Grades 11, 12Formerly Employment Skills. This class is required for all 11th grade students. This course assists students in understanding their own personal characteristics and how they relate to occupational clusters and specific occupations. In addition, students will learn search and application methods for professional level jobs. The course teaches students decision making strategies, interviewing techniques, communication skills, work adjustment strategies, and life balance strategies. One semester; ½ credit.

3653 Computer Fundamentals, Grades 10, 11, 12Articulated agreement with Columbus State Community College. CSCI 1001 Compass score requirement.This course is designed to introduce novice computer users to the fundamentals of computer terminology, hardware, software, windows operating system, directories, folder, files, copy paste functions, naming conventions and setting passwords. Additional topics covered include the World Wide Web, the Internet, search engines and Blackboard. Full year; 1 credit.

3654 Finance Career Field Course, Grades 11, 12This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental management functions of planning, leading, organizing and controlling. Students will focus on learning the fundamentals aspects of business, including aspects of entrepreneurship, marketing, management theory, motivation and leadership, human resources, sales and finance. Pre-requisite courses include Fundamentals of Business and Administrative Services #3657. Full year; 1 credit.

3656 Accounting, Grades 11, 12In this course, students will learn how businesses track money and how to record and analyze business information. Students learn how to record transactions in a general journal to post ledger accounts, and how to prepare financial statements to report businesses success. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have a basic knowledge necessary to take college level accounting courses. Recommended for Business Administration majors (interested in accounting, finance, economics, marketing) One semester; ½ credit.

3665 Entrepreneurship, Grades 10, 11, 12This course focuses on giving students the necessary knowledge to prepare for a new business start-up. There is a heavy emphasis on concept development, determination of feasibility of product/service, resource attainment, and launch strategies. Throughout the course students will be creating a business plan and simulating the steps necessary to launch the product or service. One semester, ½ credit.

Special assistance is provided in order to develop reading skills, writing skills and strategies. Students will be placed in this course based on OGT test results. One semester; ½ credit.

1151 Newspaper, Grades 10, 11, 12 (Grade 9 with “C” or better in English)This course is an introduction into the world of news journalism in today’s society. Students will explore the impact of the media on current events. Journalism 1 is also an extensive study of the use of technology in writing articles, layout techniques, editing and publishing. Students will be responsible for producing several news publications throughout the year. Full year; 1 credit.

1152 Yearbook, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12Working on the yearbook is both challenging and a rewarding experience.  Students will work as part of a team, meeting deadlines throughout the year, sometimes even in the summer.  Consequently, a yearbook staff member must be responsible and self-motivated.  This course is designed to enable students to plan, design, and produce a successful yearbook.  This course will include coverage and content, common layout and design applications, copy preparation procedures, theme development, and advertising and marketing techniques.  This course may be taken more than once. Prerequisite:  Application and/or recommendation of the teacher.  Full year; 1 elective credit.

1155 American Novel, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12This course is geared toward students who love to read. Students will pick their books (from either the class selection or library selection) and work independently or in small groups. Students are asked to complete assessments and final projects on each book read. Projects are standards-based. One semester, ½ credit.

1156 Creative Writing, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This course provides instruction in writing. Students develop their writing skills or experiences with a focus on short stories, poetry, descriptive writing, journal writing and others. Journals are kept and portfolios maintained throughout the class. Instruction is centered around the writing benchmarks of the English Language Arts Academic Content Standards. One semester; ½ credit.

1170 English Language Learners (ELL), Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This course is for students whose first language is not English. Students learn grammar, mechanics, and usage, as well as reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Cultural awareness is also emphasized. All levels of language learners are mixed in each class and many cooperative learning and individualized activities are planned to help accommodate these differences. This course may be taken more than once. One semester; ½ credit.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE3751 Foods for Life, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course takes a practical problem solving approach to Nutrition and Wellness, with hands-on activities. Course content focuses on the healthy eating habits throughout a life time and discovering how the food we eat affects the body. The information you will be learning includes: Menu planning in relation to the food pyramid, using and selecting proper kitchen equipment to prepare food, cooking and preparing food to promote a healthy lifestyle. One semester; ½ credit.

3753 Child Development, Grades 11, 12This course is designed to cover responsibilities and joys involved in caring for and raising children. Personal exploration of the decision to parent and the expectations on the parents are explored and discussed at length through the eyes of various perspectives. Emphasis are on child development from conception through the life stages and the changing family roles during those years. Activities may include service with children in the community, child abuse awareness first aid and CPR instruction. All students will participate in a service learning project. One semester; ½ credit.

3755 International Foods, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This course is designed to help students develop a better understanding of the world around them. Students will examine the culture, history, geography, religion, and government of different countries or regions, with emphasis on how each influences the food eaten in that country. Countries or regions to be studied will be determined by student interest. Collaboratively, students will prepare and serve food from each country or region studied. One semester; ½ credit.

3121 Spanish 1, Grades 9, 10, 11This course is the first year of a global language sequence. Initial emphasis is on language acquisition through listening and reading, followed by opportunities to develop speaking and writing skills. Prerequisite: Effective A minimum C average in Language Arts. Full year; 1 credit.

3122 Spanish 2, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This course is the second year of a global language sequence. It begins with a brief review of basic skills acquired in the first year. Students are immersed in experiences that develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to an advanced novice level. Introduction to Latin American culture and geography. Prerequisite: Spanish 1. Full year; 1 credit.

3123 Spanish 3, Grades 10, 11, 12This course is the third year of a global language sequence. Students continue their language acquisition through a variety of communicative activities and experiences that advance their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to an intermediate level. Prerequisite: Minimum C- average in Spanish 2, or permission of instructor. Full year; 1 credit.

3141 American Sign Language 1, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12The study of American Sign Language (ASL) 1 gives an introduction to students as a 2nd language learner the opportunity to explore a visual language and gain insight into the American deaf culture/community, values and communication that exists between the deaf and hearing worlds. This course allows students many opportunities to comprehend and use their signing with classmates, deaf peers, and other people who are fluent in American Sign Language. The goals of ASL I are to help students recognize ASL as a language, to understand the difference between ASL and spoken English in rules of grammar, to attain a rudimentary conversational proficiency in signing, and illustrate issues of diversity and fundamental aspects of American deaf culture/community. 1350 Model United Nations, Grades 9, 10, 11, 12This after school course requires independent research and group work to prepare for an annual three day global education simulation experience that allows students to learn about the complete operations of the United Nations. Through the process of role-playing, students become delegates of a selected nation in order to write, present and debate issues affecting the nations and peoples of the word. Additionally, students present culturally based talent, participate in global education contests and debate current issues from the agenda of the United Nations.
