The Future
Currently, entire market is dictated by service providers
Shifting towards paradigm where providers just give you the connection
Cell-phones becoming more and more OS and computer-like because of shift
Moving towards greater support for 3rd party applications
What’s up?
No industry definition for a “smartphone” Most smartphones are mobile PC-like
devices with the integrated features of cell phones
All phones are slowly becoming “smart” Many corporations utilize smartphones to
help keep employees better connected
Some Basics
Smartphones (“phones that can do more”) started with the IBM Simon in 1992.
Simon had: calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, notepad, e-mail, and games
Nokia quickly began producing their own smartphones, the Nokia 9000 series
Quick History
Started as a two-way pager Made it big because of its strong
e-mail application Very handy calendar and
address-book features Development platform allows
for countless other applications. Over 8 million subscribers and
17% market share.
The BlackBerry
Essentially a mobile PC. Runs an intuitive interface
utilizing a touchscreen. And yes, it can make calls too. Development platform + ubiquity
= lots of other applications (gcc on iPhone ftw)
iPhone (do uPhone?)
