*This was written by TundraSolutions.com member mhadden on7/8/07.Due to a somewhat overwhelming demand, I'm posting a how-to with pics. Hope-fullythis answer questions about the oil changes. Keep in mind that this is for5.7.The 4.7 will have the canister filter and will be a helluva lot easier to

change. Notsure if the oil filter is in a different location on the 4.7's, either.

First thing youll need to do is remove the skid plate, if you have one. Thereare 3screws (holes identified in yellow) that have Phillips ends, but you canuse the 10mm socket since itll be easier and there are 5 2 long bolts

(identified by red) hold-ing the skid up. Use your 12 mm socket with extension toget these loose. Itsprobably better to remove the front 3 screws and work your wayback as the boltswill help hold the skid up until you are ready to remove. Icouldnt get a picture of what to do to remove the skid, but once all bolts are out, youll need to push thewhole skid up and slide it towards the driver side. Then releaseand it should comedown. Be careful not to whack yourself in the head with the thingits a little heavy.

Once you remove the skid, youll need to identify where the oil filter (inyellow) andbulk oil drain bolt (in red) are located. Ive indicated them aspictured above.

Youll need a 14 mm socket to loosen the oil drain bolt. I use it to break itloose, and then I unscrew it with my hand. Get ready for a mess! Make sure youhaveyour oil pan more towards the front wheel as the oil will shoot that way. Takeabreak by drinking a beer or whatever; itll take some time for the 7 quartsof oil todrain. Once the oil is dripping out of the hole, hand tighten the bolt

back into thehole, taking care not to cross-thread the bolt. Then use the 14 mmsocket totighten.

Use your 3/8 extension to loosen the oil filter drain bolt. Dont worry; verylittle oilwill come out when you remove the bolt. Above is what itll look likewith the boltremoved. You will have to use that plastic tool to help drain the oil outof the filterarea. Ive been changing my own oil since Ive been driving and this was themessi-est, most pain-in-the-a$$ thing Ive ever dealt with. I had to push up

(and hard!) toget the oil to come out. Even after pushing up and having theoil drain for 5 min-utes I still didnt get it all. It would have been a lot easierif the sway bar wasnt soclose to the filter location.

After you attempt to drain all the oil out of the filter, wipe the area off with a rag.Makesure you dont damage the oil filter drain gasket if you plan on using itagain(I did). Then using your 65/67 mm 14 flute oil wrench and 3/8extension, twist thecap off. Once you turn it a couple times youll be able to twist itby handbe pre-pared for more oil! Drop the whole assembly into your oil pan

as itll make it easierto clean your hand and the area around the oil filter assembly.Once you have thetruckportion cleaned up, remove the old oil filter that remains onthe lower assem-bly and replace it with the new one. They should just pull offand push on. If youplan to change the gasket, do it now. Twist the lower assemblythat holds the filteron taking care not to cross-thread. Then use your oil filterwrench to twist it tight.Make sure to put your oil filter drain bolt back on(make sure the gasket it on thelower assembly, then put the bolt on). Onceeverything is tight, fill your engine upwith the motor oil of your choice and checkyour oil level on the dipstick. I used 7quarts and it put the oil level perfectlyin the middle of the empty and fill portion of the dipstick, which is where Ilike it. Made it easier not to use half a quart too

*Regarding the messy filter housing drain 'instrument', I found thatremoving theo-ring for the filter housing drain plug (after removing

the drain plug, of course)allowed the plastic thingy to seat properlyinto the opening and I was then able towalk away, drink another

beer, and allow the housing to drain completely. That way when I

unscrewed the filter housing there was no mess either.

Start your engine after filling and let it run for 2-3 minutes. Make sure youoil pres-sure is in the operating range. Check for leaks.

Youll need to put the skid back on now. Its not as bad as everyone says it is.Aboveare the holes youll need to align the hooks of the skid with. Make sure tohave theplastic tabs of the front bumper overlapping the skid, otherwise the skidwontgo back into place. Then using the reverse process of removal, hand installthe rearbolts into the skid, working your way forward taking care not to cross-thread the

bolts. Then tighten the bolts. Finally tighten the screws; watch not toovertighten the screws as itll strip the plastic holders on the skid (which canbereplaced if you do happen to strip them).
